Theory of scattering of He by A W(112) surface

Experimental data (D.V. Tendulkar and R.E. Stickney, Surface Sci. 27 (1971) 516) on the diffraction of He by W(112) are interpreted using some of the most recent theoretical ideas. The model used is a combination of the stationary sinusoidal hard wall (for example, F.O. Goodman, J. Chem. Phys. 66 (1977) 976) and the Debye-Waller-type attenuation assumption (for example, F.O. Goodman, Surface Sci. 65 (1977) 37). Encouraging qualitative agreement of theory with experiment is obtained.     

Protein binding of coherin and other small molecules by thin-layer gel chromatography

The protein binding stoichiometry of small molecules is here determined on a nanomole scale by a simplified procedure utilizing chromatography on thin layers of cross-linked dextran gels. New data are presented on the thin layer chromatographic properties of representative ligands, including a-amino acids, peptides, dyes and fluorigenic reagents, in relation to their molecular weights, polar characteristics, gel water regain values and denaturants, providing criteria for the general application of this method to studies of ligand binding with large as well as small molecules. By this procedure coherin peptides, A1 and B1--4, respectively, bind to coherin C in the molar ratio, 2:1, with a binding constant of about 10(5) M-1. Coherin C is believed to act as a carrier peptide.     

Measurements of 12C(π+, πN)11C and 19F(π+, πN)18F cross sections near the 32, 32 resonance

Reaction cross sections for ¹²C(π⁺, πN)¹¹C at 134, 161, 177, and 200 MeV and for ¹⁹F(π⁺,πN) at 161, 177, and 200 MeV were measured by activation methods.     

Application of a one-dimensional classical model of atom-oscillator scattering to atom-surface accommodation coefficient theory

A simplified model is presented for classical-mechanical calculation of the energy accommodation coefficient in gas-surface scattering: conservation of the tangential component of momentum of a gas atom is assumed, allowing restriction to a consideration of the changes in only the normal component of momentum, and the solid is represented by a single atom joined by a harmonic spring to a rigid wall; the gas atom-solid atom interaction is modelled by a (different) harmonic spring, the force-constant of which depends on the gas temperature. The model was devised to help point a way to solving some of the outstanding problems in more realistic (lattice) models: one major problem is the existence or non-existence of thermal equilibrium of a gas and a surface if their temperatures are equal, and another is the handling of the phenomenon of trapping, or sticking, of a gas atom at a surface. Some light is shed on both of these (and on some other) problems. Wherever possible, comparison is made with the best available experimental data.     

Holomorphic representations of nilpotent Lie groups

Let G be a connected, simply-connected complex nilpotent Lie group, and G_r ?( G a real form of G. Motivated by the problem of analytic continuation of Banach-space representations of G_R to holomorphic representations of G, we construct translation-invariant locally-convex algebras of entire functions on G (generalizing the classical spaces of entire functions of finite exponential order). The dual spaces of these algebras are naturally identified with algebras of left-invariant differential operators of infinite order on G. In connection with analytic continuation of unitary representations of G_R, we study the convex cone of entire functions on G whose restrictions to G_R are positive-definite, and determine the minimal order of growth at infinity of such functions.
