Evaluation of surface- and ground-water pollution due to herbicides in agricultural areas of Zamora and Salamanca (Spain)

The pollution of agricultural land due to herbicides was assessed in the Guare?a and Almar river basins, situated in the provinces of Zamora and Salamanca (Spain). A set of fifteen herbicides, including triazines, ureas, amides and others, was selected owing to their frequency of use, the amounts used, their toxicity and their persistence in the environment. Solid-phase extraction with polymeric cartridges, followed by HPLC with diode-array detection, were used to monitor the herbicides. This technique was chosen owing to the wide range of functionality and polarity of the analytes under study. The detection limits obtained were in the 0.004-0.025 microg/l range (lambda=220 nm). Surface and ground waters, taken from different locations in the basins, were analyzed over a 6-month period. The presence of six out of the fifteen herbicides monitored--chlortoluron, atrazine, terbutryn, alachlor, diflufenican and fluazifop-butyl--was detected in several samples at levels ranging from the detection limit to 1.2 microg/l. The relationship of these herbicides to the agricultural activities of the zone is discussed.     

Diastereoselective Michael addition of (S)-mandelic acid enolate to nitroalkenes. Enantioselective synthesis of α-hydroxy-α,β-diaryl-γ-lactams

The reaction of the lithium enolate of the (S,S)-cis-1,3-dioxolan-4-one derived from optically active (S)-mandelic acid and pivalaldehyde with several aromatic nitroalkenes in the presence of HMPA proceeds readily to give the corresponding Michael adducts in good yields and diastereoselectivities. Reduction of the nitro group with Zn/HCl/EtOH/H₂O with concomitant intramolecular aminolysis of the acetal moiety leads directly to enantiomerically pure α-hydroxy-α,β-diaryl-γ-lactams.     

Photooxygenation of 9-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole: A kinetic study

The reaction of the singlet oxygen with 9-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole has been undertaken to give a benzazonine derivative in good yield. Rose-bengal supported on an anionic resin was used as heterogeneous photosensitizing agent. Kinetic evaluation has been made for the additon of singlet oxygen to the indole ring at room temperature.

A diastereoselective synthesis 1-trimethylsilyl-(E)-1,3-alkenynes and a simple synthesis of alkyl trimethylsilylethynyl ketones via organoboranes

A convenient, novel diastereoselective synthesis of 1-trimethylsilyl-(E)-1,3-alkenynes and a convenient synthesis of alkyl trimethylsilylethynyl ketones based on Z-1-bromo-1-alkenylboronate esters are developed. α-Bromo-(Z)-1-alkenylboronate esters readily available using literature procedures smoothly undergo a reaction with trimethylsilylethynyllithium (derived from the deprotonation of trimethylsilylethyne with n-butyllithium) in tetrahydrofuran to provide the corresponding ‘ate’ complexes. These ‘ate’ complexes undergo intramolecular nucleophilic substitution reactions to afford the corresponding (E)-1-alkenylboronate esters containing trimethylsilylethynyl moiety which upon protonolysis with acetic acid provide the corresponding 1-trimethylsilyl-(E)-1,3-alkenynes in good yields (70-82%) and in high stereochemical purities (>98%). These intermediates upon oxidation with hydrogen peroxide and sodium acetate afford the corresponding alkyl trimethylsilylethynyl ketones in good yields (66-78%).     

Total syntheses of four stereoisomers of 4alpha-hydroxy-1beta,7beta-peroxy- 10betaH-guaia-5-ene

[reaction: see text]. The first total syntheses of four stereoisomers of 4alpha-hydroxy-1beta,7beta-peroxy-10betaH-guaia-5-ene are reported starting from the readily available (+)-dihydrocarvone. These compounds have been synthesized from dienes (-)-isoguaiene and (-)-10-epi-isoguaiene by tandem ene hydroperoxylation-[4 + 2] cycloaddition with O(2) followed by selective reduction. The structure of the natural 4alpha-hydroxy-1beta,7beta-peroxy-10betaH-guaia-5-ene isolated from Liabum floribundum has been confirmed.     

Esters flash point prediction using artificial neural networks

In this article, an artificial neural network to predict the flash point of 95 esters was implemented. Four variables were used for its development. A neural network with 4‐5‐8‐5‐1 topology was encountered to gain the best agreement of the experimental results with those predicted (square correlation coefficient (R²) and root mean square error were 0.99 and 5.46 K for the training phase and 0.96 and 13.02 K for the testing set). © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     

A QM/MM study on the reaction pathway leading to 2‐Aceto‐2‐hydroxybutyrate in the catalytic cycle of AHAS

The reaction between the intermediate 2‐hydroxyethyl‐thiamin diphosphate (HEThDP^?) and 2‐ketobutyrate, in the third step of the catalytic cycle of acetodydroxy acid synthase, is addressed from a theoretical point of view by means of hybrid quantum/molecular mechanical calculations. The QM region includes one molecule of 2‐ketobutyrate, the HEThDP^? intermediate, and the residues Arg 380 y Glu 139; whereas the MM region includes the rest of the protein. The study includes potential energy surface scans to identify and characterize critical points on it, transition state search and activation barrier calculations. The results show that the reaction occurs via a two‐step mechanism corresponding to the carboligation and proton transfer in the first stage; and the product release in the second step. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     

Unravelling the Time Scale of Conformational Plasticity and Allostery in Glycan Recognition by Human Galectin-1

The interaction of human galectin-1 with a variety of oligosaccharides, from di-(N-acetyllactosamine) to tetra-saccharides (blood B type-II antigen) has been scrutinized by using a combined approach of different NMR experiments, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and isothermal titration calorimetry. Ligand- and receptor-based NMR experiments assisted by computational methods allowed proposing three-dimensional structures for the different complexes, which explained the lack of enthalpy gain when increasing the chemical complexity of the glycan. Interestingly, and independently of the glycan ligand, the entropy term does not oppose the binding event, a rather unusual feature for protein-sugar interactions. CLEANEX-PM and relaxation dispersion experiments revealed that sugar binding affected residues far from the binding site and described significant changes in the dynamics of the protein. In particular, motions in the microsecond-millisecond timescale in residues at the protein dimer interface were identified in the presence of high affinity ligands. The dynamic process was further explored by extensive MD simulations, which provided additional support for the existence of allostery in glycan recognition by human galectin-1.     

Existence,nonexistence and multiplicity results for nonlocal Dirichlet problems

In this paper we establish various existence, nonexistence and multiplicity results for fully nonlinear Dirichlet problems associated to nonlocal Hamilton–Jacobi equations. This study is accomplished by a careful analysis of the principal eigenvalues of the elliptic operator. Resonance phenomena and anti maximum principles are also established.
