Inhibitors of prostaglandin biosynthesis from Dalbergia odorifera.

The root heartwood of Dalbergia odorifera T. Chen (Leguminosae) is a Chinese medicinal drug (Japanese name koshinko) used for a stagnant blood syndrome (stagnation of disordered blood; Japanese, oketsu). In addition to 10 known compounds, five new phenolic compounds, isomucronustyrene and hydroxyobtustyrene (cinnamylphenols), (+)-isoduartin (isoflavan), odoriflavene (isoflav-3-ene) and (-)-odoricarpan (pterocarpan) were isolated and their structures were elucidated on the basis of chemical and spectroscopic methods. Of the fifteen compounds isolated, cinnamylphenols, isoflavans, isoflavene and benzoic acid derivative significantly inhibited prostaglandin biosynthesis as well as platelet aggregation induced by arachidonic acid.     

Almost Alternating Diagrams and Fibered Links in S3

Let R be a Seifert surface obtained by applying Seifert's algorithmto a connected diagram D for a link L. In this paper, lettingD be almost alternating, we give a practical algorithm to determinewhether L is a fibered link and R is a fiber surface. We furthershow that L is a fibered link and R is a fiber surface for Lif and only if R is a Hopf plumbing, that is, a successive plumbingof a finite number of Hopf bands. It has been known for sometime that this is true if D is alternating, and we show thatit is not always true if D is 2-almost alternating. In the appendix,we partially answer C. Experimental study on interfacial area transport of a vertical downward bubbly flow

In relation to the development of the interfacial area transport equation, local flow measurements of vertical downward air–water flows in a pipe with an inner diameter of 50.8 mm were performed at three axial locations of z/D=6.50, 34.0, and 66.5 as well as ten radial locations from r/R=0 to r/R=0.9 using a multi-sensor probe. In the experiment, the superficial liquid velocity and the void fraction ranged from –0.620 m/s to –2.49 m/s and from 0.21% to 8.4%, respectively. The dependence of the interfacial area transport on the liquid velocity, void fraction, and bubble size is discussed in detail.

Self-regulated Ni cluster formation on the TiO2(1 1 0) terrace studied using scanning tunneling microscopy

We have studied the growth mode and morphology of Ni clusters on a TiO₂(1 1 0) surface with a wide terrace using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at a low coverage (less than 3 atoms nm⁻²). The Ni clusters are formed on the terrace at the low coverage of 0.2 atoms nm⁻². Their average dimensions are constant in three directions up to 1 atoms nm⁻². The Ni clusters have an oval shape with average sizes of 1.8 nm (along [0 0 1]) × 1.4 nm (along (in the [1 1 0] directions). Above the coverage of 1.0 atoms nm⁻², an increase in the cluster height occurs, retaining an almost constant lateral size. It is proposed that the interaction of the Ni cluster and the support surface regulates the Ni cluster size.     

Analysis of Off-Axial Optical Systems (1)

We have established a new method of aberration analysis for off-axial optical systems which are generalized concepts of co-axial optical systems, by introducing two kinds of newly defined 4-element vectors and expanding these vectors with the help of tensor algebra. In this method, since aberration properties are represented in tensor form, we can easily formulate the aberration relations between different azimuths. We can then evaluate the azimuth dependence of aberration properties in greater detail by separating them into inherent optical properties parts, which are independent of azimuths, and the paraxial ray-tracing part, which includes the expression of the evaluation azimuth.     

Selective absorption

Summary Some organic acids, alcohol and amine which have an asymmetric carbon atom were used for an investigation of asymmetric absorption on wool. Racemic mixture of hydratropic acid, mandelic acid andα-phenethylamine have shown the selective absorption on wool from their aqueous and alcoholic aqueous solutions and S-form of their diastereoisomers preferentially absorbed on wool. According to the results we obtained so far, it is concluded that the preferential absorption strongly depends on the configuration of the substance of which wool is composed.
