Free differential algebras: Their use in field theory and dual formulation

The gauging of free differential algebras (FDA's) produces gauge field theories containing antisymmetric tensors. The FDA's extend the Cartan-Maurer equations of ordinary Lie algebras by incorporating p-form potentials (p>1). We study here the algebra of FDA transformations. To every p-form in the FDA, we associate an extended Lie derivative l generating a corresponding gauge transformation. The field theory based on the FDA is invariant under these new transformations. This gives geometrical meaning to the antisymmetric tensors. The algebra of Lie derivatives is shown to close and provides the dual formulation of FDA's.     

Anodic behaviour of mono- and bisdithiafulvenyl-9,9′-spirobifluorene: insertion of vinylogous TTF into the spirobifluorenyle framework

New three-dimensional copolymers containing 9,9′-spirobifluorenyl-ethylene units were prepared by anodic oxidation of 9,9′-spirobifluorenes 2-mono- or 2,7′-disubstituted by a dithiafulvenyl unit. The synthesis, physicochemical properties and electrochemistry of both monomers and derived oligomers and polymers are reported.     

The thermodynamic properties of acetals+heptane mixtures at 298.15 K

Excess enthalpies and excess volumes were determined at 298.15 K for: dimethoxymethane+heptane, diethoxymethane+heptane, 1,1-dimethoxyethane+heptane, 1,1-diethoxyethane+heptane, 2,2-dimethoxypropane+heptane and 1,1-diethoxypropane+heptane.

Gas-phase chemistry of the negative ions of fully-protected peptides by high-resolution electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry

Fully-protected C-terminal free peptides can be conveniently analyzed by high-resolution electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS) in a quadrupole quadrupole time-of-flight tandem hybrid mass spectrometer, operated in the negative (-) ionizaionization mode. The unusual choice of negative ions in mass spectrometry applications to peptide analysis was needed to obtain exhaustive sequence and structural data. The low-energy collision-induced dissociation (CID) experiments provided, in fact, tandem mass spectra displaying highly diagnostic fragments with a good signal-to-noise ratio. The method is applied to segments of porcine calcitonin (Cal), Cal (1016, 1), Cal (1724, 2) and Cal (2528, 3) whose [M H]- deprotonated molecular ions provided low-energy CID mass spectra which allow the evaluation either of the primary structure of the peptide and of the location of the side-chain protective groups. ESI (+) MS can be conveniently used, in the high resolution mode, to achieve precise information on the elemental composition of the examined peptides.

Determination of lead in seawater by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry after separation and pre-concentration with cocrystallized naphthalene alizarin

An analytical method for separation and pre-concentration of lead in seawater for determination by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry has been investigated. Lead was retained in the solid phase (0.5 g) composed of co-precipitated naphthalene and alizarin red. The solid phase quantitatively sorbs Pb(II) at pH 8–9, and the metal was eluted using 5.0 ml of 2 mol l⁻¹ nitric acid. The effect of NaCl, KCl, BaCl₂, CaCl₂, Na₂SO₄, MgCl₂ and Na₃PO₄ on the sorption of Pb(II) in the solid phase was studied. A set of solutions containing varying amounts of electrolytes (0.5; 1.0; 3.0 and 5.0% m/v) with Pb (50 μg) was prepared and the recommended procedure applied. The Na₃PO₄ was found to interfere; the other electrolytes did not interfere up to 5% m/v. A pre-concentration factor of 40 was obtained in this analytical procedure. The limit of detection and limit of quantification for Pb(II) were 53 and 176 μg l⁻¹, respectively. Lead was determined in seawater samples collected in Salvador city, Bahia, Brazil. The precision, expressed as R.S.D., was 1.8–4.6%, and the recovery of lead added to seawater samples was 95–97%.     

Synthesis of 4‐(trihalomethyl)dipyrimidin‐2‐ylamines from β‐alkoxy‐α,β‐unsaturated trihalomethyl ketones

The synthesis of a novel series of twelve 4‐(trihalomethyl)dipyrimidin‐2‐ylamines, from the cyclo‐condensation reaction of 4‐(trichloromethyl)‐2‐guanidinopyrimidine, with β‐alkoxyvinyl trihalomethyl ketones, of general formula: X₃C‐C(O)‐C(R²)=C(R¹)‐OR, where: X = F, Cl; R = Me, Et, ‐(CH₂)₂‐, ‐(CH₂)₃‐; R¹ = H, Me; R² = H, Me, ‐(CH₂)₂‐, ‐(CH₂)₃‐, is reported. The reactions were carried out in acetonitrile under reflux for 16 hours, leading to the dipyrimidin‐2‐ylamines in 65‐90% yield. Depending on the substituents of the vinyl ketone, tetrahydropyrimidines or aromatic pyrimidine rings were obtained from the cyclization reaction. When X = Cl, elimination of the trichloromethyl group was observed during the cyclization step. The structure of 4‐(trihalomethyl)dipyrimidin‐2‐ylamines was studied in detail by ¹H‐, ¹³C‐ and 2D‐nmr spectroscopy.
