The main purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between students' approaches to studying, prior knowledge, logical thinking ability, and gender and their performance in a nonmajors' college freshman chemistry course. Subjects for this study were 220 students (128 females and 92 males) enrolled in the second semester of a freshman chemistry course for nonmajors at a private university in New York State. Instruments used in this study included seven subscales of the Approaches to Studying Inventory and the Test of Logical Thinking (TOLT). The students' grades on an hour-long exam early in the semester were used as measures of the students' prior knowledge, while the semester cumulative final examination scores were used as measures of achievement in chemistry. Students in this study had slightly higher scores on reproducing orientation than on meaning orientation, a pattern that confirms Entwistle and Ramsden's (1983) findings with a similar group of nonmajors. The results of a stepwise multiple regression showed that prior knowledge, TOLT scores, and meaning orientation accounted for 32% of the variance on the final examination scores.  相似文献

A series of azido‐dyes were synthesized through Knoevenagel reactions of an azido‐BODIPY with aromatic aldehydes. The nature of the substituents allowed the fine tuning of their spectroscopic properties. The dyes were used to decorate oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (ox‐MWCNTs), bearing terminal triple bond groups, by CuAAC reactions, affording fluorescent materials. This decoration allowed the efficient determination of the internalization of the ox‐MWCNT derivatives by different model cancer cells, such as MCF7.  相似文献

The nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of forty-nine benzobisheterocyclic compounds, containing various heterocycles, were determined. The observed spectral data made possible the elucidation of the structure and also clarified the influences of the heterocyclic substituents and of heterocyclic rings on chemical shift values of the aromatic protons.  相似文献

Abstract— The spectroscopic characterization of the photoreceptor pigment is one of the main questions in the study of the photosensory transduction chains in photomotile microorganisms. One of the possible techniques that can be used is in vivo microspectrofluorometry. By means of a tunable dye-laser microspectrofiuorometer developed by us, we have investigated some of the spectroscopic properties of the photoreceptor pigment of the green flagellate Euglena gracilis. The in vivo fluorescence excitation spectrum has been determined and the fluorescence quantum yield has been measured. The results show that flavins are indeed present in the paraflagellar body of E. gracilis and that their fluorescence quantum yield is much lower than that of a free flavin. An estimate of the order of magnitude of the rate constants for primary molecular reactions is tentatively given.  相似文献

Abstract

Crystals of 2-pyridyl-phenyl sulphone are monoclinic, space group P21/c, with eight molecules in the unit cell of dimensions a = 11.781, b = 5.903, c = 29.748 Å and B = 94.13°. The dihedral angles between the best planes of the two aromatic rings are significantly different in two crystallographically independent molecules (88.4° and 71.9° for molecule A and molecule B, respectively), as well as those between the CSC plane and the pyridine ring (59.4° and 67.4°) and between the CSC plane and the phenyl ring (51.7° and 81.8°). The average bond distances of interest include C?S 1.77(1) and S?O 1.44(1) Å; among the bond angles there are CSO = 108.1(7), CSC = 105.0(6) and OSO = 118.7(6)°. The packing of the molecule in the crystal is determined by the van der Waals interactions and by two intermolecular H?O contacts of 2.43 and 2.49 Å. The observed conformation in the solid state agrees well with results of previous investigations, in the solution state, by means of dipole moment method and theoretical M.O. calculations, for the analogous di-2-pyridyl sulphone.  相似文献

Pure, 5 at%, and 10 at% Ta- or Nb-doped TiO2 nanosized powders were prepared by the sol-gel method. The powders heated to 400°C have the crystalline anatase structure. While the pure TiO2 powder heated to 850°C has the rutile structure, the addition of Ta and Nb inhibited the anatase-to-rutile phase transformation at this temperature. Ta was soluble in the titania lattice up to the concentration of 10 at%, while the solubility of Nb was 5 at%. Thick films were fabricated with these powders by screen printing technology and then fired at 650°C and 850°C for 1 h. SEM observations showed that the anatase-to-rutile phase transformation induces a grain growth of about one order of magnitude for pure TiO2. The addition of Ta and Nb is effective to keep the TiO2 grain size at the nanometric level even at 850°C. Conductance measurements showed that a good gas response is observed only for the nanostructured titania-based films. The CO response of these materials is only slightly affected by humidity.  相似文献

Parameters suitable to describe the conformational behavior of α – β unsaturated aminoacids and peptides in the framework of an existing force field for nucleic acids and proteins (S.J. Weiner, P.A. Kollman, D.A. Case, U. Chandra Singh, C. Ghio, G. Alagona, S. Profeta, Jr., and P. Weiner, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 106 , 765 (1984)) are proposed and tested. Attention is primarily focused on dehydrophenylalanine and dehydroalanine containing peptides. The values of the parameters needed were obtained from experimental measurements available in the literature and from ad hoc quantum mechanical calculations. The selected values have subsequently been adapted and refined through molecular mechanical simulations on model compounds, such as Ac-ΔPhe-NMe, for which it was possible to carry out STO-3G/SCF calculations to check selected points on the ?,ψ conformational map, and Ac-ΔAla-NMe, where the comparison was carried out at the 4-31G level. The newly determined force field was then applied to Ac-ΔPhe-Ala-ΔPhe-NMe, whose minimal energy structures allowed us to explain the different circular dichroism behavior observed in CH2Cl2 and in dioxane. Starting from two minimum energy geometries of this tripeptide, the full optimization with AM1 produced an independent guess to their structure and stability in good agreement with the molecular mechanical one.  相似文献

A reinvestigation of the redox behavior of the [Fe(3)(&mgr;(3)-S)(CO)(9)](2)(-) dianion led to the isolation and characterization of the new [Fe(5)S(2)(CO)(14)](2)(-), as well as the known [Fe(6)S(6)(CO)(12)](2)(-) dianion. As a corollary, new syntheses of the [Fe(3)S(CO)(9)](2)(-) dianion are also reported. The [Fe(5)S(2)(CO)(14)](2)(-) dianion has been obtained by oxidative condensation of [Fe(3)S(CO)(9)](2)(-) induced by tropylium and Ag(I) salts or SCl(2), or more straightforwardly through the reaction of [Fe(4)(CO)(13)](2)(-) with SCl(2). The [Fe(6)S(6)(CO)(12)](2)(-) dianion has been isolated as a byproduct of the synthesis of [Fe(3)S(CO)(9)](2)(-) and [Fe(5)S(2)(CO)(14)](2)(-) or by reaction of [Fe(4)(CO)(13)](2)(-) with elemental sulfur. The structures of [N(PPh(3))(2)](2)[Fe(5)S(2)(CO)(14)] and [N(PPh(3))(2)](2)[Fe(6)S(6)(CO)(12)] were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Crystal data: for [N(PPh(3))(2)](2)[Fe(5)S(2)(CO)(14)], monoclinic, space group P2(1)/c (No. 14), a = 24.060(5), b = 14.355(6), c = 23.898(13) ?, beta = 90.42(3) degrees, Z = 4; for [N(PPh(3))(2)](2)[Fe(6)S(6)(CO)(12)], monoclinic, space group C2/c (No. 15), a = 34.424(4), b = 14.081(2), c = 19.674(2) ?, beta = 115.72(1) degrees, Z = 4. The new [Fe(5)S(2)(CO)(14)](2)(-) dianion shows a "bow tie" arrangement of the five metal atoms. The two Fe(3) triangles sharing the central Fe atom are not coplanar and show a dihedral angle of 55.08(3) degrees. Each Fe(3) moiety is capped by a triply bridging sulfide ligand. The 14 carbonyl groups are all terminal; two are bonded to the unique central atom and three to each peripheral iron atom. Protonation of the [Fe(5)S(2)(CO)(14)](2)(-) dianion gives reversibly rise to the corresponding [HFe(5)S(2)(CO)(14)](-) monohydride derivative, which shows an (1)H-NMR signal at delta -21.7 ppm. Its further protonation results in decomposition to mixtures of Fe(2)S(2)(CO)(6) and Fe(3)S(2)(CO)(9), rather than formation of the expected H(2)Fe(5)S(2)(CO)(14) dihydride. Exhaustive reduction of [Fe(5)S(2)(CO)(14)](2)(-) with sodium diphenyl ketyl progressively leads to fragmentation into [Fe(3)S(CO)(9)](2)(-) and [Fe(CO)(4)](2)(-), whereas electrochemical, as well as chemical oxidation with silver or tropylium tetrafluoroborate, in dichloromethane, generates the corresponding [Fe(5)S(2)(CO)(14)](-) radical anion which exhibits an ESR signal at g = 2.067 at 200 K. The electrochemical studies also indicated the existence of a subsequent one-electron anodic oxidation which possesses features of chemical reversibility in dichloromethane but not in acetonitrile solution. A reexamination of the electrochemical behavior of the [Fe(3)S(CO)(9)](2)(-) dianion coupled with ESR monitoring enabled the spectroscopic characterization of the [Fe(3)S(CO)(9)](-) radical monoanion and demonstrated its direct involvement in the generation of the [Fe(5)S(2)(CO)(14)](n)()(-) (n = 0, 1, 2) system.  相似文献
