Co2+ spin-lattice relaxation narrowing of 19F NMR in KCoF3

The temperature dependence of the ¹⁹F NMR linewidth ΔH in KCoF₃ has been measured over the entire paramagnetic solid state region. The dramatic decrease in the hyperfine-broadened, exchange narrowed ΔH that occurs above 200 K is interpreted as arising from fast Co²⁺ single-ion, spin-lattice relaxation. A model theory of the temperature dependence of ΔH is given which incorporates the interplay of exchange and spin lattice relaxation effects on the decay of the spin autocorrelation function.     

Search for pi(0)-->nu(mu)nu(mu) decays in the LSND detector

We observe a net beam excess of 8.7+/-6.3(stat)+/-2.4(syst) events, above 160 MeV, resulting from the charged-current reaction of nu(micro) and/or nu;(mu) on C and H in the LSND detector. No beam-related muon background is expected in this energy regime. Within an analysis framework of pi(0)-->nu(mu)nu;(mu), we set a direct upper limit for this branching ratio of Gamma(pi(0)-->nu(mu)nu;(mu))/Gamma(pi(0)-->all)<1.6 x 10(-6) at 90% confidence level.     

Bis(carbene)pyridine complexes of Cr(III): exceptionally active catalysts for the oligomerization of ethylene

Pincer-heterocyclic carbene complexes of Cr(III), of the form [2,6-(1-alkylimidazol-2-ylidene)pyridine]CrCl3, have been prepared and evaluated as catalysts for the oligomerization of ethylene to alpha-olefins. In combination with methylaluminoxane cocatalyst, exceptionally high activities are obtained, ranging up to ca. 40 000 g mmol-1 bar-1 h-1.     

A Fast Algorithm for Wave Propagation from a Plane or a Cylindrical Surface

The newly developed Taylor-Interpolation-FFT (TI-FFT) algorithm dramatically increases the computational speeds for millimeter wave propagation from a planar (cylindrical) surface onto a “quasi-planar” (“quasi-cylindrical”) surface. Two different scenarios are considered in this article: the planar TI-FFT is for the computation of the wave propagation from a plane onto a “quasi-planar” surface and the cylindrical TI-FFT is for the computation of wave propagation from a cylindrical surface onto a “quasi-cylindrical” surface. Due to the use of the FFT, the TI-FFT algorithm has a computational complexity of O(N ² log₂  N ²) for an N × N computational grid, instead of N ⁴ for the direct integration method. The TI-FFT algorithm has a low sampling rate according to the Nyquist sampling theorem. The algorithm has accuracy down to −80 dB and it works particularly well for narrow-band fields and “quasi-planar” (“quasi-cylindrical”) surfaces.     

Phenotype and in vitro function of mature MDDC generated from cryopreserved PBMC of cancer patients are equivalent to those from healthy donors

Background  

Monocyte-derived-dendritic-cells (MDDC) are the major DC type used in vaccine-based clinical studies for a variety of cancers. In order to assess whether in vitro differentiated MDDC from cryopreserved PBMC of cancer patients are functionally distinct from those of healthy donors, we compared these cells for their expression of co-stimulatory and functional markers. In addition, the effect of cryopreservation of PBMC precursors on the quality of MDDC was also evaluated using samples from healthy donors.     

Biosynthesis of phycobilins. Formation of the chromophore of phytochrome, phycocyanin and phycoerythrin

Phycobiliproteins play important roles in photomorphogenesis and photosynthesis. The light-absorbing chromophores of the phycobiliproteins are linear tetrapyrroles (bilins) very similar in structure to the mammalian bile pigments. 5-Aminolaevulinate (5-ALA) is the first committed intermediate in phycobilin synthesis. The biosynthesis of 5-ALA, destined for phycobilins, occurs via the five-carbon pathway, now well established for tetrapyrrole synthesis in plants and distinct from the mammalian pathway. The phycobilins are formed by reduction of biliverdin which results from the synthesis and degradation of haem. This haem is an essential intermediate in the biosynthesis of phycobilins. Phycocyanobilin, the blue-green pigment found in certain algae and cyanobacteria, is formed from biliverdin via phytochromobilin, the chromophore of phytochrome. This leads to the likelihood that phytochromobilin is formed as an end product, or intermediate, in the synthesis of all phycobilins.     

Rapid determination of 237Np and Pu isotopes in water by inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry and alpha spectrometry

A new method that allows rapid preconcentration and separation of plutonium and neptunium in water samples was developed for the measurement of ²³⁷Np and Pu isotopes by inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and alpha spectrometry. ²³⁸U can interfere with ²³⁹Pu measurement by ICP-MS as ²³⁸UH⁺ mass overlap and ²³⁷Np via peak tailing. The method provide enhanced removal of uranium by separating Pu and Np initially on TEVA Resin, then moving Pu to DGA resin for additional removal of uranium. The decontamination factor for uranium from Pu is almost 100,000 and the decontamination factor for U from Np is greater than 10,000. This method uses stacked extraction chromatography cartridges and vacuum box technology to facilitate rapid separations. Preconcentration is performed using a streamlined calcium phosphate precipitation method. Purified solutions are split between ICP-MS and alpha spectrometry so that long and short-lived Pu isotopes can be measured successfully. The method allows for simultaneous extraction of 20 samples (including QC samples) in 4?C6 h, and can also be used for emergency response. ²³⁹Pu, ²⁴²Pu and ²³⁷Np were measured by ICP-MS, while ²³⁶Pu, ²³⁸Pu, and ²³⁹Pu were measured by alpha spectrometry.
