Study of formation mechanism of 1,3-benzodioxanes from tertiary phenoloalcohols and carbonyl compounds using labeled atoms

It was shown that the reaction of o-hyroxyphenyldiphenylmethanol with benzaldehyde labeled with ¹⁷O and ¹⁸O isotopes proceeds in such a way that oxygen atoms of the starting phenoloalcohol are retained.Translated from Khimiya Geterotsiklicheskikh Soedinenii, No. 5, pp. 632–633, May, 1991.     

On the Whitham Equations for the Defocusing Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation with Step Initial Data

The behavior of solutions of the finite-genus Whitham equations for the weak dispersion limit of the defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation is investigated analytically and numerically for piecewise-constant initial data. In particular, the dynamics of constant-amplitude initial conditions with one or more frequency jumps (i.e., piecewise linear phase) are considered. It is shown analytically and numerically that, for finite times, regions of arbitrarily high genus can be produced; asymptotically with time, however, the solution can be divided into expanding regions which are either of genus-zero, genus-one, or genus-two type, their precise arrangement depending on the specifics of the initial datum given. This behavior should be compared to that of the Korteweg-de Vries equation, where the solution is divided into regions which are either genus-zero or genus-one asymptotically. Finally, the potential application of these results to the generation of short optical pulses is discussed: The method proposed takes advantage of nonlinear compression via appropriate frequency modulation, and allows control of both the pulse amplitude and its width, as well as the distance along the fiber at which the pulse is produced     

A finite model property for RMImin

It is proved that the variety of relevant disjunction lattices has the finite embeddability property. It follows that Avron's relevance logic RMI _min has a strong form of the finite model property, so it has a solvable deducibility problem. This strengthens Avron's result that RMI _min is decidable. Quenching of the eutectoidal composition of the shape memory alloys (SMA’s) allowed us to display the gradual transition of the martensitic structure as a function of the composition. Indeed, we have verified that for low Al and Ni percentages, the martensite structure obtained is β′, while, for high Al and Ni (Al<13.3 mass%) contents, the martensite structure is essentially of β₁′ type. Elsewhere, we have observed that a nickel addition (<4.3 mass%) operates simultaneously on the composition of the eutectoidal pointand the domain of the different martensitic structures types. During reheating of the quenched structure, the transformation sequences of the martensite to the parent phase (β1), then the decomposition of the later phase into the equilibrium phases, and finally, the redissolution of all phases to form the β phase at high temperature, are rather similar. Indirect Methods For Determination of The Protective Effects of Coating Films on The Surface of Crystals

The extents of the protective effects of coating films on the surface of crystals were determined. Three different samples were made with different quantities of coating fluid (Sepifilm LP 010 in 10% aqueous solution). Since the atomizing rate was constant, the coating time increased in parallel with the volume of coating fluid applied. The direct measurement of film thickness and smoothness is very difficult, and therefore indirect methods were used. Dimenhydrinate was chosen as model drug; this is a heat-sensitive antihistamine with a low melting point. This temperature can be reached during the tableting process. The behaviour of samples on exposure to heat was examined by differential scanning calorimetry. The water uptakes of the samples were determined with an Enslin apparatus. Plasticity was studied with an instrumented tablet machine. These indirect methods (thermal conductivity, water uptake and plasticity measurements) revealed connections between the results of the various experiments. An overlong coating time decreased the protective effect of the coating film. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Nucleophilic Substitution in 4-Bromo-5-nitrophthalodinitrile: V. Synthesis of 5-Nitro-4-(4-R-phenoxy)phthalodinitriles and Phthalocyanines Derived from Them

A series of aryloxy-substituted phthalodinitriles were prepared by nucleophilic aromatic substitution of bromine in 4-bromo-5-nitrophthalodinitrile, and the corresponding phthalocyanines were synthesized. The physicochemical properties of phthalocyanines depend on the substituent in the aryl moiety.     

Effect of Alkali Metal Cation on Copolymerization of Acrylamide with Salts of 2-Acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic Acid in Aqueous Solutions

The kinetics of radical copolymerization of acrylamide with lithium, sodium, and potassium 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonates in concentrated aqueous solutions in the presence of potassium persulfate as initiating agent at pH 9 and 50°C was studied by dilatometry.     

The application of a vehicle routing model to a waste-collection problem: two case studies

In this paper we suggest a unique model for estimating the operating cost of each of three waste-collection systems. Under the traditional system, which is widely used, waste is typically collected in plastic bags and a three-man crew is needed on each vehicle. The other two systems require a one-man crew for vehicle collecting street containers. The side-loader system with fixed body automatically empties street containers into the vehicle body and empties the load at the disposal site. The side-loader system with demountable body allows the separation of the waste collection phase from transport to the disposal site, since the vehicle body can be demounted. We also present two case studies and show how the estimation of operating costs is a critical issue in decisions regarding the type of system to be used for waste collection.     

Possibilities of Production and Use of Rubber-Bitumen Compounds

Procedures are discussed for production of rubber-bitumen compounds based on spent rubber items. A possibility of using these binders for paving is studied experimentally.     

The Markov power moment problem in problems of controllability and frequency extinguishing for the wave equation on a half-axis

In this paper necessary and sufficient conditions of null-controllability and approximate null-controllability are obtained for the wave equation on a half-axis. Controls solving these problems are found explicitly. Moreover, bang-bang controls solving the approximate null-controllability problem are constructed with the aid of solutions of a frequency extinguishing problem in the restricted band (−a,a) for this equation and the Markov power moment problem.
