Liquid crystal side chain polysiloxanes containing various proportions of non-mesogenic units

Recent studies have established that side chain polymeric liquid crystals composed of mesogenic and non-mesogenic side groups keep their liquid-crystalline properties even for a low proportion of mesogens. We show that the detailed structures of three kinds of new diluted liquid crystal polysiloxanes depend on the nature of the co-substituent as well as on the proportion of the silicon sites occupied by the mesogenic groups. Mixtures of these systems with low molar mass liquid crystals were also investigated in terms of compatibility and/or stabilization of smectic A phases.     

He-N2 radiofrequency discharge: Influence of N2 on discharge and afterglow

A diagnostic study q (energy transfer processes in a He-N₂ flowing discharge and afterglow has been performed in a radiofrequency-produced plasma cooled in a liquid nitrogen hath. Optical emission spectroscopy in the visible and infrared spectral range as well as Langrnuir probe diagnostics were used. The vibrational kinetics of CO injected in such an afterglow has been examined. It shows a slow cooling of the electrons in the afterglow regime. The electron kinetics responsible joy CO vibrahonal excitation is turned off when N₂ is added to the He discharge, while that for vibrationally excited N₂ molecules is turned on. The results are discussed on the basis of previous theorerical calculations and experiments on the He-N₂ system.     

Structure of fullerene-containing soot at different formation stages of arc discharge vaporization of graphite

Electron microscopy is used in a study of nanoclusters of the carbon soot deposited on a probe in different areas of arc discharge during graphite vaporization under conditions favorable for fullerene synthesis. It is found that the spatial network of soot nanoclusters consists of alternating regions of higher density or associates of carbon particles. Two types of nanoclusters have been identified with the correlation radii of the associates equal to 0.6–0.8 and 1.6–2.2 nm, respectively. Type I nanoclusters are dominant in the soot microparticles, and their structure shows practically no variations with increasing separation r of the soot collector from the discharge axis over the range of distances studied, r=1–9 cm. The effective radius R ₀ of the “elementary” particles making up the associates in the soot nanoclusters of Type I calculated with the use of scaling relationships is 0.15–0.17 nm and is close to the gas-kinetic radius of carbon atoms. Type II nanoclusters have been identified in soot collected at r>3 cm. Values of R ₀ calculated in this case are 0.6–0.9 nm and decrease with increasing r, which indicates the presence of fullerene molecules in these nanocluster associates.     

Features of evolution of the substructure in the creep of dispersion-hardened nickel

A study is made of the laws governing high-temperature creep and the evolution of the substructure in dispersion-hardened alloy Ni — 3 vol. % HfO₂ during its free annealing and creep. The polygonized substructure was formed in the alloy prior to annealing. An analysis is made of structural transformations at different structural levels and the mechanism of high-temperature creep in the alloy. The inclusion of electrostatic and dispersion interactions into potentials of mean torque for solutes dissolved in uniaxial liquid crystal solvents

A potential of mean torque is derived for a solute at infinite dilution in a uniaxial liquid crystal solvent, which contains terms originating from the dispersion interaction, and the electrostatic interaction between quadrupole moments on both molecules. It is shown that the electrostatic term is non-zero only if the solute-solvent vectors are distributed with lower than spherical symmetry. If this distribution has cylindrical symmetry then both the electrostatic and dispersion terms in the potential of mean torque are shown to depend on order parameters for the orientational distribution of the solute-solvent vectors, as well as on the order parameters of the solvent molecules.     

Dielectric relaxation of a short molecule in a liquid-crystalline solvent

Dielectric relaxation measurements of 5 mole % 4-n-hexyloxycyanobenzene (I) dissolved in 4-n-pentyloxyphenyl-trans-4-n-octylcyclohexylcarboxylate (II) were carried out from 1 kHz to 10 MHz in the nematic, smectic A and smectic B phases. The relaxation frequency of I parallel to the director is about 05 MHz in the S_Bphase and increases rapidly at the transition from S_B to S_A.     

Plant processing by simultaneous lactic acid fermentation and enzyme hydrolysis

Traditional ensiling of plant material by anaerobic lactic acid fermentation was combined with enzymatic hydrolysis (ENLAC for short) with cell wall degrading enzymes (hemicellulases, cellulases, and pectinases) to increase fiber digestibility or to increase the recovery of cell content from plants. Such findings were made using 0.015% (w/w, wet basis) Phylacell® enzyme preparation by ENLAC of corn and corn-sorghum mixtures, but not of forage grasses. Addition to alfalfa of a mixture of cell wall degrading enzymes, such as NOVO Viscozyme® together with NOVO Celluclast® each at 0.2–1.0% (w/w, wet basis), resulted in more rapid ensiling and improvement of rumen digestibility of silage by 20%. After 20 d of ensiling at 25 °C when the same enzymes were added to alfalfa at the 1.0% level, protein recovery by pressing increased by 35%, β-carotene recovery by 80%, and chlorophyll/xanthophyll recovery by 30%. ENLAC with the same enzymes also increased the recovery of sclareol from muscatel sage by 400%.
