Influence of high-order dispersion on self-focusing. II. Numerical investigation

The self-focusing described by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a higher-order derivative term is investigated numerically. We demonstrate that, depending on the sign before this term, it may lead in the final stage either to defocusing or to a steady homogeneous wave beam. In both cases the transition to the final state is shown to be oscillatory.     

Quasiparticle and Cooper pair tenneling in small capacitance Josephson junctions

The tunneling of single electrons in small capacitance tunnel junctions is influenced by charging effects and by the fluctuations of the elecromagnetic environment. We study the effect of an external circuit with arbitrary impedance on the tunneling of quasiparticles and Cooper pairs in voltage driven Josephson junctions. We present results at finite temperatures and also consider an acdriven system.     

Band structures in73Se

Excited states of⁷³Se have been investigated up to spin, 21/2 using techniques of in-beamγ-ray spectroscopy in connection with the⁷⁰Ge(α, n) reaction. Mean lifetimes of 12 levels have been determined applying Doppler-shift andγ-RF-methods. Five different bands have been identified that reflect a variety of different excitation modes. The decoupled 9/2⁺ band is likely to correspond to an oblate deformation while the 5/2⁺ band is interpreted as a strongly coupled prolate band built on the Nilsson configuration [422] 5/2⁺. The 3/2^? band is a strongly coupled band built on the [301] 3/2^} configuration.Nuclear reactions:⁷⁰Ge(α,n),E=14, 16, 18, 19, 20MeV; measuredE _γ,I _γ,σ(E _γ,θ),γγ-coin, linear polarization, DSA,γ(t).⁷⁵Se deduced levels,I, π, τ, δ(E2/M1), B(σλ). Enriched targets, Ge detectors.     

Vacuum discharge effects in the diodes of high-current electronaccelerators

The processes occurring in the diodes of high-current electron accelerators which affect the electron beam structure are discussed. Two types of diodes are analyzed: planar diodes producing large cross-section beams, and magnetically insulated diodes producing cylindrical beams. The effects considered are: the screening effect, the effect of touches, the relay effect, the ring effect, etc. They are entirely associated with the explosive electron emission occurring on the cathode of a high-current diode. Methods which can be employed to eliminate or control some of these effects are described-namely, the application of an additional magnetic field, artificial initiation of emission centers, and employment of metal-dielectric cathodes. Examples of several types of cathode are given     

The 3-D FEL pulse propagation equation: An analytical treatment in the low-gain and small-signal regime

Summary In this paper we show that the transverse mode evolution of a FEL operating with short pulses can be treated, in the small-signal and low-gain regime, using a relatively simple mathematical technique leading to a potentially fast numerical algorithm. We also point out that analytical solutions can be obtained for the cases where the slippage length is small compared to the longitudinal bunch length.     

Lasers at accelerators—past,present and future

The application of lasers at accelerators is reviewed with emphasis on laser spectroscopy of short-lived isotopes and the determination of nuclear spins, moments, and changes of charge radii in long isotopic chains leading far-off stability. Experimental techniques as well as future directions are discussed.     

Investigation of the reaction order for nucleophilic substitution of dialkyl methylphosphonates by alkoxides

The rate of nucleophilic substitution at the phosphorus centre of dialkyl methylphosphonates by methoxide and ethoxide has been studied to investigate the possible involvement of hexacoordinated phosphorus species in this reaction. For alkoxide concentrations less than ca. 1.5 M the rate increases with the square of alkoxide concentration. However, consideration of the activity of the alkoxides, represented by an appropriate acidity function, reveals that only one equivalent of alkoxide is involved in the rate-determining step. Thus, there is no requirement to invoke the intermediacy of a hexacoordinated species in the reaction pathway. © John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Characterization of carbide phases in high speed tool steels

A study is reported on carbides electrolytically extracted from two different types of high speed tool steels as quenched and after tempering. According to X-ray diffraction analysis and EDS microanalysis, Mössbauer spectra show the presence of MC and M₆C in every analysed sample. Only a few substitutional Fe atoms should be present in MC and they give a minor contribution to the Mössbauer spectrum. A model for evaluating the Mössbauer spectrum of M₆C is proposed which is based on the symmetry of lattice sites occupied by Fe atoms and partially substituted by other metallic atoms. The proposed model also allows to get information on the amount of this substitution.
