Is energy self sufficiency a realistic goal for Canada?

Canada uses more energy per capita than any other major nation. The primary reasons are geography, climate, energy intensive industries and low energy prices. The country has substantial primary energy resources. This paper utilizes a dynamic energy policy model and a wide range of scenarios to investigate the possibility for long run energy self sufficiency and the related questions of timing, export possibilities and maintaining domestic energy prices below world levels.     

α-particle model of the rotation spectrum of 12C

It is shown that the 0⁺, 2⁺, 4⁺ rotation spectrum and an oblate deformed ground state for ¹²C are consistent with a simple α-particle model for its long range structure.     

Symmetric Functions and Generating Functions for Descents and Major Indices in Compositions

In [18], Mendes and Remmel showed how Gessel’s generating function for the distributions of the number of descents, the major index, and the number of inversions of permutations in the symmetric group could be derived by applying a ring homomorphism defined on the ring of symmetric functions to a simple symmetric function identity. We show how similar methods may be used to prove analogues of that generating function for compositions.     

Ionic transport in potassium chloride and a possible trwacancy contribution to it (oral presentation)

Abstract

The ionic transport properties of potassium chloride are discussed in light of the recent measurements of the electrical conductivity and chlorine ion diffusion in KCl and KCl: SrCl₂ single crystals. These measurements were analyzed using as a model a perfect crystal perturbed by five defects: isolated anion vacancies. isolated cation vacancies, divalent cation impurities, divalent-cation-impurity-cation-vacancy-complexes, and vacancy pairs. This analysis revealed nonrandom deviations between the theoretical and experimental values of the transport properties. Possible explanations of these deviations are discussed. The possibility of a trivacancy mechanism making a contribution to the conductivity is considered. The concentration and migration of trivacancies is examined.     

Natural and Doubly Natural Dualities

Representable dualities between categories of modules satisfying natural closure properties are investigated and shown to be determined by homological properties shared by various classical and recently investigated types of dualities.     

One-pot enol silane formation-Mukaiyama aldol reactions: Crossed aldehyde-aldehyde coupling,thioester substrates,and reactions in ester solvents

Trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMSOTf) and a trialkylamine base promote both in situ enol silane/silyl ketene acetal formation and Mukaiyama aldol addition reactions between a variety of reaction partners in a single reaction flask. Isolation of the required enol silane or silyl ketene acetal is not necessary. For example, crossed aldol reactions between α-disubstituted aldehydes and non-enolizable aldehydes yield β-hydroxy aldehydes in good yield. In a related reaction, the common laboratory solvent ethyl acetate functions as both an enolate precursor and a green reaction solvent. When thioesters are employed as enolate precursors, high yields for additions to non-enolizable aldehydes are routinely observed.
