Synthesis,hypolipidemic and antifungal activity of tetrahydroberberrubine sulfonates

The paper describes the synthesis of new tetrahydroberberrubine derivatives containing polyfl uorophenyl- or alkylsulfonate groups at the O(9) position as well as those containing or not containing a bromine atom at the C(12) position. In a model of acute Triton-induced hyperlipidemia, tetrahydroberberrubine 9-O-(heptafluoro-4’-toluene)sulfonate was shown to reduce the cholesterol level by 23.5%, which is comparable with the eff ect of Simvastatin. At a concentration of 32 μg mL^?1, tetrahydroberberrubine 9-O-pentafluorobenzenesulfonate inhibits the growth of the fungus Cryptococcus neoformans by 81.3±3.5%.

Water-Soluble Rhenium Clusters with Triazoles: The Effect of Chemical Structure on Cellular Internalization and the DNA Binding of the Complexes

Here we explore the effect of the nature of organic ligands in rhenium cluster complexes [Re₆Q₈L₆]⁴⁻ (where Q=S or Se, and L=benzotriazole, 1,2,3-triazole or 1,2,4-triazole) on the biological properties of the complexes, in particular on the cellular toxicity, cellular internalization and localization. Specifically, the study describes the synthesis and detailed characterization of the structure, luminescence and electrochemical properties of the four new Re₆ clusters with 1,2,3- and 1,2,4-triazoles. Biological assays of these complexes are also discussed in addition to those with benzotriazole using cervical cancer (HeLa) and immortalized human fibroblasts (CRL-4025) as model cell lines. Our study demonstrates that the presence of hydrophobic and π-bonding rich units such as the benzene ring in benzotriazole significantly enhances cellular internalization of rhenium clusters. These ligands facilitate binding of the clusters to DNA, which results in increased cytotoxicity of the complexes.     

Determination of the parameters of asymmetric parabolic waveguides

The dispersion equation for an asymmetric parabolic waveguide is obtained using solutions in the form of Whittaker functions. The electric field distribution is computed numerically for the TE₀ and TE₁ modes. The condition of applicability for the Hermite polynomials as solutions of the wave equation is studied. Results are presented for waveguides based on films of the oxide systems TiO₂:Al₂O₃, TiO₂:ZrO₂, and TiO₂:Nb₂O₅. Good agreement is observed between the parameters for waveguides obtained from film-forming solutions and from electron-beam vaporization.Translated from Izvestiya Vysshikh Uchebnykh Zavedenii, Fizika, No. 10, pp. 46–49, October, 1987.     

Indole derivatives

The reaction of substituted aziridines with indole was studied. It is shown that the presence of electron-donor substituents attached to the carbon atom or of bulky substituents attached to the nitrogen atom in aziridines favors cleavage of the aziridine ring by indole to give derivatives of tryptamine and tryptophan.For Communication VI see [1].Translated from Khimiya Geterotsiklicheskikh Soedinenii, No. 8, pp. 1066–1069, August, 1974.     

Experimental comparison of methods of determining the thermal accommodation coefficient

An experimental comparison of two widely employed methods of determining accommodation coefficients is presented; these are the method of free molecular flow and the method of the temperature jump. The values of the coefficients which have to be introduced into the computing relationships of the temperature-jump method in order to obtain the true values of the accommodation coefficient are determined, this method being theoretically the less rigorous.
