Instabilities in thermal gravity with a cosmological constant

It is shown that in quantum gravity at finite temperature, the effective potential evaluated in the tadpole approximation can have a local minimum below a certain critical temperature. However, when the leading higher order thermal loop corrections are included, one finds that no static solution exists at high temperature.

Invited Lecture. Columnar ordering as an excluded-volume effect

The nature of the possible liquid-crystalline phases that a molecular or colloidal system may exhibit depends sensitively on the shape of the constituent particles. Recent computer simulations on fluids of consisting of non-spherical hard-core molecules suggest that, in order to predict the relative stability of isotropic, nematic, smectic and columnar phases in such very simple model fluids, it is not enough to characterize the molecular shape by an overall length-to-width ratio. New results of computer simulations on a model for disc-like molecules clearly illustrate this point.     

Simplex equations and their solutions

We investigate ann-simplex generalization of the classical and quantum Yang-Baxter equation. For the case ofsl(2) we find the most general solution of the classicaln-simplex equation for alln. These classical solutions can be quantized (in the sense of quantum group theory) forn=2,3 and we exhibit a quantum solution to the tetrahedron equations (n=3). The classical nondegenerate solutions cannot be quantized forn=4.

ThermoData Engine (TDE): software implementation of the dynamic data evaluation concept. 5. Experiment planning and product design

ThermoData Engine (TDE) is the first full-scale software implementation of the dynamic data evaluation concept, as reported recently in this journal. In the present paper, we describe development of an algorithmic approach to assist experiment planning through assessment of the existing body of knowledge, including availability of experimental thermophysical property data, variable ranges studied, associated uncertainties, state of prediction methods, and parameters for deployment of prediction methods and how these parameters can be obtained using targeted measurements, etc., and, indeed, how the intended measurement may address the underlying scientific or engineering problem under consideration. A second new feature described here is the application of the software capabilities for aid in the design of chemical products through identification of chemical systems possessing desired values of thermophysical properties within defined ranges of tolerance. The algorithms and their software implementation to achieve this are described. Finally, implementation of a new data validation and weighting system is described for vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data, and directions for future enhancements are outlined.
