Decay and regularity for dispersive equations with constant coefficients

This article discusses some smoothing estimates of the initial value problem for dispersive equations with constant coefficients. In particular, it is shown that a certain condition for the principal part of the symbol (see the assumption (1.3) below, which is equivalent to the one “of principal type” in the paper by Ben-Artzi and Devinatz [2]) is necessary and sufficient for the maximal smoothing in space-time. Sets with two associative operations

In this paper we consider duplexes, which are sets with two associative binary operations. Dimonoids in the sense of Loday are examples of duplexes. The set of all permutations carries a structure of a duplex. Our main result asserts that it is a free duplex with an explicitly described set of generators. The proof uses a construction of the free duplex with one generator by planary trees.     

Applying a Mode Selector to Improve the Pulse-Compression Performance of Asymmetric-Coupled-Waveguide-Based Dispersion Compensators

An InGaAsP slab-type asymmetric-coupled-waveguide-based dispersion compensator with a mode selector has been designed and fabricated. The mode selector is necessary to select either a symmetric [with a positive group-velocity dispersion (GVD)] or antisymmetric (with a negative GVD) supermode. These supermodes exist simultaneously in the dispersion-compensation region of the device. Pulse-compression experiments were used to test the dispersion compensator, evaluating the function of the mode selector. A theoretical study of the experimental results shows that the mode selector obtains a very strong selectivity (nearly 100%) for the antisymmetric supermode.     

Synchronized whistlers recorded at Varanasi

Some interesting events of synchronized whistlers recorded at low latitude station Varanasi during magnetic storm period of the year 1977 are presented. The dynamic spectrum analysis shows that the component whistlers are Eckersley whistlers having dispersion 10 s^1/2 and 30 s^1/2. An attempt has been made to explain the dynamic spectra using lightning discharge generated from magnetospheric sources     

Rotation of a Fine Particle with Circularly Polarized Anti-Parallel Collinear Laser Beams

We have succeeded in the operation of rotating a fine particle which was held without mechanical contact by circularly polarized laser beams with opposite propagation directions. A polystyrene latex particle 11.9 μm in diameter deformed in a disk-like shape was dispersed in water, and was trapped using the anti-parallel collinear laser beams which were set up so that they had the circular polarization rotating in the same direction. It was observed that the trapped particle rotated in the same direction as the rotation of the circular polarization of light. Inversion of the rotational direction of the circular polarization of light reversed the direction of the rotation of the particle. Although the rotational speed of a particle varied significantly from particle to particle, it was found to be proportional to the laser beam intensity. A typical value for the rotational speed per beam intensity was 2.1 Hz/W.     

Analysis of the charge transfer mechanisms responsible for the current-voltage characteristics of Ca<Subscript>4</Subscript>Ga<Subscript>2</Subscript>S<Subscript>7</Subscript>: Eu<Superscript>3+</Superscript> single crystals

The current-voltage characteristics of Ca₄Ga₂S₇: Eu³⁺ single crystals are measured for the first time, and the processes affecting these characteristics are analyzed theoretically. It is demonstrated that Ca₄Ga₂S₇: Eu³⁺ single crystals are high-resistance semiconductors with a resistivity of ～10⁹ Ω cm and a relative permittivity of 10.55. The electrical properties of the studied materials are governed by traps with activation energies of 0.13 and 0.19 eV and a density ranging from 9.5×10¹⁴ to 2.7×10¹⁵ cm^?3. The one-carrier injection is observed in weak electric fields. In electric fields with a strength of more than 4×10³ V/cm, traps undergo thermal field ionization according to the Pool-Frenkel mechanism. At low temperatures and strong fields (160 K and 5×10⁴ V/cm), the electric current is most likely due to hopping conduction by charge carriers over local levels in the band gap in the vicinity of the Fermi level.     

Generalized Mukai conjecture for special Fano varieties

Let X be a Fano variety of dimension n, pseudoindex i _X and Picard number ρ_X. A generalization of a conjecture of Mukai says that ρ_X(i _X −1)≤n. We prove that the conjecture holds for a variety X of pseudoindex i _X ≥n+3/3 if X admits an unsplit covering family of rational curves; we also prove that this condition is satisfied if ρ_X> and either X has a fiber type extremal contraction or has not small extremal contractions. Finally we prove that the conjecture holds if X has dimension five.     

Microwave‐improved polymerization of ϵ‐caprolactone initiated by carboxylic acids

The ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone (ε‐CL), initiated by carboxylic acids such as benzoic acid and chlorinated acetic acids under microwave irradiation, was investigated; with this method, no metal catalyst was necessary. The product was characterized as poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) by ¹H NMR spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography. The polymerization was significantly improved under microwave irradiation. The weight‐average molecular weight (M_w) of PCL reached 44,800 g/mol, with a polydispersity index [weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight (M_w/M_n)] of 1.6, when a mixture of ε‐CL and benzoic acid (25/1 molar ratio) was irradiated at 680 W for 240 min, whereas PCL with M_w = 12,100 and M_w/M_n = 4.2 was obtained from the same mixture by a conventional heating method at 210 °C for 240 min. A degradation of the resultant PCL was observed during microwave polymerization with chlorinated acetic acids as initiators, and this induced a decrease in M_w of PCL. Gravitation as Anholonomy

A gravitational field can be seen as the anholonomy of the tetrad fields. This is more explicit in the teleparallel approach, in which the gravitational field-strength is the torsion of the ensuing Weitzenböck connection. In a tetrad frame, that torsion is just the anholonomy of that frame. The infinitely many tetrad fields taking the Lorentz metric into a given Riemannian metric differ by point-dependent Lorentz transformations. Inertial frames constitute a smaller infinity of them, differing by fixed-point Lorentz transformations. Holonomic tetrads take the Lorentz metric into itself, and correspond to Minkowski flat spacetime. An accelerated frame is necessarily anholonomic and sees the electromagnetic field strength with an additional term.
