Wannier functions with a simple model potential

Wannier functions for the two lowest bands are calculated for a one-dimensional two Fourier component potential. These functions show the general behavior predicted by Kohn.     

Condensation of benzyl chloride catalyzed by group II metals

The polymerization of benzyl chloride in the presence of various group II metal salts has been investigated. The extent of reaction and the relative activities of various salts were determined by measurement of the evolved HCl as a function of time. Formation, in situ, of an active catalyst is proposed.     

Nuclear shielding and magnetic hyperfine structure of hydrogen cyanide

A millimeter-wave molecular beam maser has been used to resolve the magnetic hyperfine structure of hydrogen cyanide. The spin-rotation interaction constants have been measured for the three nuclei ¹⁴N, ¹³C, and H. The paramagnetic nuclear shielding factors have been calculated for the three nuclear sites. The spin-rotation constants for ¹⁴N in H¹²C¹⁴N, for H in H¹²C¹⁴N and for ¹³C in D¹³C¹⁴N are + 10.4 kHz, −3.7 kHz, and +15.0 kHz, respectively. The respective paramagnetic shielding factors are −408.98 × 10⁻⁶, −73.40 × 10⁻⁶, and −249.52 × 10⁻⁶.

Orthogonal transformations for feature extraction in chemical pattern recognition

A crucial point in pattern recognition methods is the extraction of features to determine the pattern vectors. Orthogonal transformations, e.g., Fourier, Walsh and Haar, are investigated as preprocessing methods for feature extraction. The theoretical considerations and conclusions are compared with computational results obtained by applying different pattern recognition methods to two different but similar collections of low-resolution mass spectra.     

Molecular photoionization cross-sections and their dependence on excitation energy

A general formula for the photoionization cross-section of a linear molecule in terms of atomic subshell cross-sections and diffraction effects is given. Example calculations are carried out for line intensities of CO and N₂ as a function of incident photon energy from threshold up to the soft X-ray region. The importance of associating CNDO coefficients to orthogonal Slater AO's is pointed out. General rules for dependence of photoionization cross-sections on excitation energy are discussed.
