A short proof of the 3d distance theorem

We give a simple proof of the 3d distance conjecture.     

On double and multiple interval graphs

In this paper we discuss a generalization of the familiar concept of an interval graph that arises naturally in scheduling and allocation problems. We define the interval number of a graph G to be the smallest positive integer t for which there exists a function f which assigns to each vertex u of G a subset f(u) of the real line so that f(u) is the union of t closed intervals of the real line, and distinct vertices u and v in G are adjacent if and only if f(u) and f(v)meet. We show that (1) the interval number of a tree is at most two, and (2) the complete bipartite graph K_{m, n} has interval number ?(mn + 1)/(m + n)?.

Carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra and conformations of cis,cis-1,5-cyclooctadiene monoepoxide and cis,syn,cis-1,5-cyclooctadiene diepoxide

The natural-abundance ¹³C NMR spectra of cis,cis-1,5-cyclooctadiene monoepoxide and cis,syn,cis-1,5-cyclooctadiene diepoxide have been investigated over the temperature range of – 10 to – 180°C. Whereas the spectra of the former showed no dynamic NMR effect, two different conformations in the ratio of 3:1 were observed at low temperatures for the latter. The free-energy barrier (ΔG^≠) for conversion of the major conformation to the minor conformation is calculated to be 5.9°0.2 kcal mol^?1 from a line-shape analysis of spectra obtained at intermediate temperatures. It is shown that cis,syn,cis-1,5-cyclooctadiene diepoxide exists in solution in chair (major) and in twist-boat (minor) conformations of slightly different energies. Interconversion paths between these conformations are discussed. The monoepoxide is suggested to have a twist-boat conformation that is rapidly pseudorotating via a boat conformation even at – 180°C.     

The tensor polarization of 5Li (32−) in the reaction α + d → α + p + n

At the Hamburger Isochronous Cyclotron the formation of the particle unstable ground state of ${}^5\text{Li(}\text{3}\text{2}{}^{\mathrm{?}}$ has been investigated in the reaction α + d → α + p + n at E_α = 28.3 MeV. The neutrons were detected in two liquid scintillation counters, while a large Si (Li) detector was used to observe the α-particles. In a first analysis, the tensor polarization parameters of the five-nucleon system ⁵Li are determined from the experimental data. The results are in quite good agreement with theoretical predictions of Hackenbroich et al.
