Working group report: Heavy-ion physics and quark-gluon plasma

This is the report of Heavy Ion Physics and Quark-Gluon Plasma at WHEPP-09 which was part of Working Group-4. Discussion and work on some aspects of quark-gluon plasma believed to have created in heavy-ion collisions and in early Universe are reported.     

THE 518-mμ ABSORBANCE CHANGE AND ITS RELATION TO THE PHOTOSYNTHETIC PROCESS

Abstract— A study of the 518-mμ light-induced absorbance change in green cells and a comparison with photosynthetic O₂ evolution were made. The effect of various chemical agents was also investigated. On the one hand, no antagonistic two-light effect was observed on the absorbance change, and DCMU had only a partial inhibitory effect on it. On the other hand, it was possible to observe in some cases an indirect kinetic relationship between O₂ evolution and 518-mμ change. It is suggested that probably at least two substances absorb around 518-mμ, one ( X _I) belonging to system I and another ( X _II) to system II. The existence and the function of X _I are hypothetical and the identity of X _II with the first photoproduct of system II is yet not well established.     

THE FUNCTION OF P700 AND CYTOCHROME f IN THE PHOTOSYNTHETIC REACTION CENTER OF SYSTEM 1 IN RED ALGAE

Abstract— Kinetics and quantum yields of light-induced oxidation of P700 and the f -type cytochrome were measured in marine red algae from absorbance changes in the region 420, 435 and 705 nm. The quantum yield for cytochrome oxidation in Iridaea splendens and Schizymenia pacifica was 0.5-0.65 in far-red light, at 20 and at 0C.
Oxidation rates of P700 measured when varying amounts of cytochrome were in the oxidized state indicated that a reaction center of system 1 in Iridaea contains 1 P700 and 4 cytochrome molecules. Oxidized P700 only accumulates when all 4 cytochromes are oxidized. The rate of photochemistry of system 1, measured as the sum of the rates of P700 and cytochrome oxidation, was independent of the oxidation level of cytochrome, but decreased with accumulation of oxidized P700. This decrease was less than proportional to the fraction of P700 that was in the oxidized state, which suggested transfer of excitation energy between reaction centers.
The quantum yield for cytochrome oxidation after dark periods of 1 min or more was only about 0.2. This effect was tentatively ascribed to a dark reduction of the cytochrome coupled to phosphorylation.     

Preparation and characterization of MgB2 superconductor

The MgB₂ superconductor, synthesized using solid-state and liquid-phase sintering methods, have been characterized for various properties. The upper critical field, irreversibility line and critical current density have been determined using magnetization data. The current-voltage characteristics recorded under an applied magnetic field revealed the existence of vortex glass transition. The surface analysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows that MgB₂ is sensitive to atmospheric degradation.     

Inclusive and exclusive measurements in the projectile breakup of 7Li

The inclusive and exclusive measurements were carried out for ⁷Li projectile breakup on ²⁷Al target at 48 MeV. In the inclusive data we have observed a broad peak around the beam velocity for alphas and tritons. The exclusive data for alpha-triton coincidences show good agreement with the post-form DWBA theory of breakup reactions.
