9-BBN: An amino acid protecting group for functionalization of amino acid side chains in organic solvents

9-Borabicyclononane (9-BBN) has been utilized to protect functionalized amino acids for potential chemoselective side chain manipulation. The 9-BBN group imparts organic solubility to otherwise hydrophilic molecules and is tolerant of a wide range of reaction conditions. The high degree of solubility of these molecules in THF is particularly noteworthy. It is cleaved with either aqueous HCl or by exchange with ethylenediamine in methanol. [reaction: see text]     

A study of the production of high-p t π0 at the CERN intersecting storage rings

The inclusive cross-section for π⁰ production near 90° inpp collisions at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings has been studied for thep _T range 3<p _T <16GeV/c at four different centre-of-mass energies ( \(\sqrt s = 30.6\) , 44.8, 52.7, and 62.8 GeV). In this experiment the two photons from the π⁰→yy decay were resolved and measured separately forp _T values up to 10 GeV/c. Results indicate an agreement with thep _T ^?8 behaviour for the lower values ofp _T and a slower decrease of the cross-section for the higher values ofp _T . The high-p _T data deviate from the scaling expressionp _T ^?n F(x _T ), which holds for the lowerp _T values (p _T <8GeV/c).     

Cyclopropane chemistry. Part 5 [1,2]. Hexafluorocyclopropane as a source of difluorocarbene

Thermolysis of hexafluorocyclopropane in the presence of ethylene, propene, vinyl chloride, and vinyl bromide gives good yields of the corresponding 1,1-difluorocyclopropanes, formed by addition of difluorocarbene to the olefin. The tetrafluoroethylene formed dimerises to octafluorocyclobutane, co-dimerises with the olefin, or survives, depending on the reaction conditions. With allene, hexafluorocyclopropane gives 1-(difluoromethylene)cyclopropane, 2,2,3,3-tetrafluorospiropentane, and products derived from tetrafluoroethylene and allene.     

Effect of column diameter on efficiency in capillary supercritical fluid chromatography

Fused silica capillary columns with internal diameters from 100 to 25 μm were coated with SE-54 and evaluated under supercritical fluid chromatographic conditions using carbon dioxide as mobile phase. Experimental results compared well with theoretical predictions. At ten times the optimum mobile phase velocity and for a capacity factor, k of 3, efficiencies of 2300 to 5600 plates m^?1 were obtained for column diameters of 100 to 25 μm, respectively.     

N-halogeno-compounds. Part 9 [1]. Azoxy- and azo-arenes derived from 4-(dichloroamino)tetrafluoropyridine; crystal structure of trans-2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl-onn-azoxy)pyridine

The nitrosoarenes ArNO (Ar = C₆H₅, 2-MeC₆H₄, 2,4,6- Me₃C₆H₂ and C₆F₅) have been condensed with 4-(dichloroamino)- tetrafluoropyridine to provide the azoxy-compounds py_FN$\text{N}\text{+}$($\text{N}\text{-}$)Ar (py_F = 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-pyridyl); de-oxygenation of the first three with triphenylphosphine or triethyl phosphite gave the corresponding azo-compounds, and the reverse reaction was achieved in the case of py_FNNC₆H₂Me₃-2,4,6 using peroxytrifluoroacetic acid. Thermolysis of 4-azidotetrafluoropyridine in the presence of pentafluoronitrosobenzene provided the perfluorinated azoxy-compound py_FN$\text{N}\text{+}$($\text{O}\text{-}$)C₆F₅. X-Ray methods have been used to determine the molecular geometry of py_FN$\text{N}\text{+}$($\text{O}\text{-}$)C₆H₂Me₃-2,4,6.     

Search for massive photon pair production at the CERN intersecting storage rings

A search for massive photon pair production at \(\sqrt s = 63 GeV\) has been carried out on the data sample previously employed for the electron pair production study. Positive evidence is reported form _γγ>6GeV, with a production cross-section similar to Drell-Yan electron pairs. The ratio γγ/π⁰π⁰ was measured to be ～10^?3 for ap _T of each γ or γ or π⁰ above 3 GeV/c.     

High resolution capillary electrophoresis of carbon nanotubes

Purification of single-walled carbon nanotubes by capillary electrophoresis (CE) is demonstrated. Real-time Raman spectroscopy of the separation process and single-wavelength UV/vis detection show the ability of CE to provide high-resolution separations of nanotube fractions with baseline separation. AFM images of collected fractions demonstrate that separations are based on tube length. The separation method is suggested to be based on alignment of the nanotubes along the separation field.     

Inclusive η production at high pT at the ISR

The inclusive η production cross section at the CERN ISR has been measured for p_T values of up to 11 GeV/c. We find that the $\text{η}\text{π}{}^0$ cross-section ratio has an average value of 0.55 ± 0.07 and varies little with p_T.     

The 93Nb(p,d)92Nb reaction at 26.3 MeV

The ⁹³Nb(p, d)⁹²Nb reaction was studied at a proton energy of 26.3 MeV. Angular distributions were obtained for outgoing deuterons to 37 states in ⁹²Nb up to an excitation energy of 4.2 MeV. The results were compared with DWBA calculations to extract l-values and spectroscopic factors. Fourteen previously unobserved l = 1 transitions were measured.
