The flavoenzyme monoamine oxidase (MAO) regulates mammalian behavioral patterns by modulating neurotransmitters such as adrenaline and serotonin. The mechanistic basis which underpins this enzyme is far from agreed upon. Reported herein is that the combination of a synthetic flavin and alloxan generates a catalyst system which facilitates biomimetic amine oxidation. Mechanistic and electron paramagnetic (EPR) spectroscopic data supports the conclusion that the reaction proceeds through a radical manifold. This data provides the first example of a biorelevant synthetic model for monoamine oxidase B activity. 相似文献

We study shear banding flows in models of wormlike micelles or polymer solutions, and explore the effects of different boundary conditions for the viscoelastic stress. These are needed because the equations of motion are inherently non-local and include “diffusive” or square-gradient terms. Using the diffusive Johnson–Segalman model and a variant of the Rolie-Poly model for entangled micelles or polymer solutions, we study the interplay between different boundary conditions and the intrinsic stress gradient imposed by the flow geometry. We consider prescribed gradient (Neumann) or value (Dirichlet) of the viscoelastic stress tensor at the boundary, as well as mixed boundary conditions in which an anchoring strength competes with the gradient contribution to the stress dynamics. We find that hysteresis during shear rate sweeps is suppressed if the boundary conditions favor the state that is induced by the sweep. For example, if the boundaries favor the high shear rate phase then hysteresis is suppressed at the low shear rate edges of the stress plateau. If the boundaries favor the low shear rate state, then the high shear rate band can lie in the center of the flow cell, leading to a three-band configuration. Sufficiently strong stress gradients due to curved flow geometries, such as that of cylindrical Couette flow, can convert this to a two-band state by forcing the high shear rate phase against the wall of higher stress, and can suppress the hysteresis loop observed during a shear rate sweep. 相似文献

Compound specific stable isotope analyses of managed soils using isotope ratio mass spectrometry have been undertaken as a means of determining early land use practices. delta (15)N amino acid signals demonstrate differences between manured grassland, unmanured grassland and continuous cereal cultivation under long-term experimental land use control conditions, with delta (15)N in hydrophobic amino acids providing the most distinctive signals. Analysis of early modern/medieval and of Bronze age anthropogenic soils from Orkney demonstrates that such signals are retained in archaeological contexts. delta (13)C analyses of n- alkanoic acid components of the fossil, Bronze Age, anthropogenic soils suggest a major terrestrial input to these soils, with uniform composition of formation materials. Surficial soils demonstrate the assimilation of isotopically lighter carbon, providing a means of assessing the mobility of the n- alkanoic acids within soils and sediments. On COMPASS-D the profile evolution of electron density, electron temperature, perpendicular electric field, poloidal impurity
velocity, and neutral density at the outboard mid-plane has been investigated during ohmic single null diverted (SND) discharges
undergoing an L/H, H/L, and another L/H transition. This was achieved using a novel combined diagnostic consisting of thermal
helium beam and Doppler spectrometry, sharing the same lines of sight. To generate the transitions first an ELM-free H-mode
phase was produced by terminating the gas fuelling. Within this H-mode a stepped gas puff was applied triggering an intermediate
L-mode phase followed by a second ELM-free phase. It was found that on COMPASS-D the L/H transition is not preceded by a change
in velocity or electric field shear. The maximum electric field shear of ∇ ▽E
ψ
≈2×103kV/m2 develops after the L/H transition around the 95% flux surface. Although the neutral density at the separatrix is of the ordern
D ≈ 1017m−3 no indication of a local influence could be concluded. However, a correlation between the decay of the shear and the gas
puff was observed.

We report a femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (TRPES) investigation of internal conversion in the first two excited singlet electronic states of styrene. We find that radiationless decay through an S(1)/S(0) conical intersection occurs on a timescale of ~4 ps following direct excitation to S(1) with 0.6 eV excess energy, but that the same process is significantly slower (~20 ps) if it follows internal conversion from S(2) to S(1) after excitation to S(2) with 0.3 eV excess energy (0.9 eV excess energy in S(1)). 相似文献

We have performed extensive small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) diffraction studies of the vortex lattice in single crystal
YNi2B2C for B‖c. High-resolution SANS, combined with a field-oscillation vortex lattice preparation technique, allows us to separate Bragg
scattered intensities from two orthogonal domains and accurately determine the unit cell angle, β. The data suggest that upon increasing field there is a finite transition width where both low- and high-field distorted
hexagonal vortex lattice phases, mutually rotated by 45°, coexist. The smooth variation of diffracted intensity from each

As a sensitive marker of changes in flame structure, the number densities of excited-state CH (denoted CH*), and excited-state OH (denoted OH*) are imaged in coflow laminar diffusion flames. Measurements are made both in normal gravity and on the NASA KC-135 reduced-gravity aircraft. The spatial distribution of these radicals provides information about flame structure and lift-off heights that can be directly compared with computational predictions. Measurements and computations are compared over a range of buoyancy and fuel dilution levels. Results indicate that the lift-off heights and flame shapes predicted by the computations are in excellent agreement with measurement for both normal gravity (1g) and reduced gravity flames at low dilution levels. As the fuel mixture is increasingly diluted, however, the 1g lift-off heights become underpredicted. This trend continues until the computations predict stable flames at highly dilute fuel mixtures beyond the 1g experimental blow-off limit. To better understand this behavior, an analysis was performed, which indicates that the lift-off height is sensitive to the laminar flame speed of the corresponding premixed mixture at the flame edge. By varying the rates of two key “flame speed” controlling reactions, we were able to modify the predicted lift-off heights so as to be in closer agreement with the experiments. The results indicate that reaction sets that work well in low dilution systems may need to be modified to accommodate high dilution flames. 相似文献

The dynamics of rotationally autoionizing Rydberg states of molecular hydrogen is investigated using a time-dependent extension of multichannel quantum defect theory, in which the time-dependent wave packets are constructed using first-order perturbation theory. An analytical expression for the complex excitation function for a sequence of Gaussian excitation pulses is derived and then employed to investigate the influence of pairs of pulses with well-defined phase differences on the decay dynamics and final-state composition. 相似文献
