We study numerically the formation of long-lived transient shear bands during shear startup within two models of soft glasses (a simple fluidity model and an adapted "soft glassy rheology" model). The degree and duration of banding depends strongly on the applied shear rate, and on sample age before shearing. In both models the ultimate steady flow state is homogeneous at all shear rates, consistent with the underlying constitutive curve being monotonic. However, particularly in the soft glassy rheology case, the transient bands can be extremely long lived. The banding instability is neither "purely viscous" nor "purely elastic" in origin, but is closely associated with stress overshoot in startup flow. 相似文献

We study the linear instability with respect to necking of a filament of polymeric fluid undergoing uniaxial extension. Contrary to the widely discussed Considère criterion, we find the onset of instability to relate closely to the onset of downward curvature in the time (and so strain) evolution of the zz component of the molecular strain, for extension along the z axis. In establishing this result numerically across five of the most widely used models of polymer rheology, and by analytical calculation, we argue it to apply generically. Particularly emphasized is the importance of polymer chain stretching in partially mitigating necking. We comment finally on the relationship between necking and the shape of the underlying steady state constitutive curve for homogeneous extension. 相似文献

The efficient synthesis of all-acrylic, film-forming, core-shell colloidal nanocomposite particles via in situ aqueous emulsion copolymerization of methyl methacrylate with n-butyl acrylate in the presence of a glycerol-functionalized ultrafine silica sol using a cationic azo initiator at 60 °C is reported. It is shown that relatively monodisperse nanocomposite particles can be produced with typical mean weight-average diameters of 140-330 nm and silica contents of up to 39 wt %. The importance of surface functionalization of the silica sol is highlighted, and it is demonstrated that systematic variation of parameters such as the initial silica sol concentration and initiator concentration affect both the mean particle diameter and the silica aggregation efficiency. The nanocomposite morphology comprises a copolymer core and a particulate silica shell, as determined by aqueous electrophoresis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron microscopy. Moreover, it is shown that films cast from n-butyl acrylate-rich copolymer/silica nanocomposite dispersions are significantly more transparent than those prepared from the poly(styrene-co-n-butyl acrylate)/silica nanocomposite particles reported previously. In the case of the aqueous emulsion homopolymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of ultrafine silica, a particle formation mechanism is proposed to account for the various experimental observations made when periodically sampling such nanocomposite syntheses at intermediate comonomer conversions. 相似文献

PpoA is a fungal dioxygenase that produces hydroxylated fatty acids involved in the regulation of the life cycle and secondary metabolism of Aspergillus nidulans . It was recently proposed that this novel enzyme employs two different heme domains to catalyze two separate reactions: within a heme peroxidase domain, linoleic acid is oxidized to (8R)-hydroperoxyoctadecadienoic acid [(8R)-HPODE]; in the second reaction step (8R)-HPODE is isomerized within a P450 heme thiolate domain to 5,8-dihydroxyoctadecadienoic acid. In the present study, pulsed EPR methods were applied to find spectroscopic evidence for the reaction mechanism, thought to involve paramagnetic intermediates. We observe EPR resonances of two distinct heme centers with g-values typical for Fe(III) S = (5)/(2) high-spin (HS) and Fe(III) S = (1)/(2) low-spin (LS) hemes. (14)N ENDOR spectroscopy on the S = (5)/(2) signal reveals resonances consistent with an axial histidine ligation. Reaction of PpoA with the substrate leads to the formation of an amino acid radical on the early millisecond time scale concomitant to a substantial reduction of the S = (5)/(2) heme signal. High-frequency EPR (95- and 180-GHz) unambiguously identifies the new radical as a tyrosyl, based on g-values and hyperfine couplings from spectral simulations. The radical displays enhanced T(1)-spin-lattice relaxation due to the proximity of the heme centers. Further, EPR distance measurements revealed that the radical is distributed among the monomeric subunits of the tetrameric enzyme at a distance of approximately 5 nm. The identification of three active paramagnetic centers involved in the reaction of PpoA supports the previously proposed reaction mechanism based on radical chemistry. 相似文献

Continuous-wave spectra at W-band of four triarylmethyl (trityl) radicals at 100 K in 1∶1 water-glycerol exhibit rhombic electron paramagnetic resonance spectra. The rigid-lattice line widths at W-band are only 3 to 5 times larger than at X-band or S-band, and fluid-solution line widths are much narrower than those for rigid lattice, which indicates that unresolved anisotropic nuclear hyperfine couplings make significant contributions to the rigid-lattice line widths. Spin-flip lines are observed in glassy-solution spectra at X-band and S-band, but not at W-band or 250 MHz. At 100 KT m is dominated by spin diffusion of solvent protons and is independent of microwave frequency. Between about 130 and 170 K, 1/T m for trityl-CH3 is enhanced by rotation of the methyl groups at a rate comparable to inequivalences in the hyperfine interaction. Motional averaging of anisotropic interactions enhances spin echo dephasing between about 200 and 300 K. The temperature dependence of 1/T 1 is similar for the four radicals and is consistent with assignment of the Raman process and a local mode as the dominant relaxation processes. The similarity inT 1 values at W-band and X-band supports this assignment. 相似文献

Background
Microglia provide continuous immune surveillance of the CNS and upon activation rapidly change phenotype to express receptors that respond to chemoattractants during CNS damage or infection. These activated microglia undergo directed migration towards affected tissue. Importantly, the molecular species of chemoattractant encountered determines if microglia respond with pro- or anti-inflammatory behaviour, yet the signaling molecules that trigger migration remain poorly understood. The endogenous cannabinoid system regulates microglial migration via CB2 receptors and an as yet unidentified GPCR termed the 'abnormal cannabidiol' (Abn-CBD) receptor. Abn-CBD is a synthetic isomer of the phytocannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) and is inactive at CB1 or CB2 receptors, but functions as a selective agonist at this Gi/o-coupled GPCR. N-arachidonoyl glycine (NAGly) is an endogenous metabolite of the endocannabinoid anandamide and acts as an efficacious agonist at GPR18. The stochastic motion of a two-dimensional vesicle in linear shear flow is studied at finite temperature. In the limit of
small deformations from a circle, Langevin-type equations of motion are derived, which are highly nonlinear due to the constraint
of constant perimeter length. These equations are solved in the low-temperature limit and using a mean-field approach, in
which the length constraint is satisfied only on average. The constraint imposes non-trivial correlations between the lowest
deformation modes at low temperature. We also simulate a vesicle in a hydrodynamic solvent by using the multi-particle collision
dynamics technique, both in the quasi-circular regime and for larger deformations, and compare the stationary deformation
correlation functions and the time autocorrelation functions with theoretical predictions. Good agreement between theory and

We study numerically the rheological properties of a slab of active gel close to the isotropic-nematic transition. The flow behavior shows a strong dependence on the sample size, boundary conditions, and on the bulk constitutive curve, which, on entering the nematic phase, acquires an activity-induced discontinuity at the origin. The precursor of this within the metastable isotropic phase for contractile systems (e.g., actomyosin gels) gives a viscosity divergence; its counterpart for extensile suspensions admits instead a shear-banded flow with zero apparent viscosity. 相似文献
