Novel stereocontrolled addition of allylmetal reagents to alpha-imino esters: efficient synthesis of chiral tetrahydroquinoline derivatives

To prepare in multigram scale new antagonists of the glycine binding site associated to the NMDA receptor, an efficient distereoselective route was set up. The addition of suitable allyltin reagents to chiral N-aryl alpha-imino esters (R-(+)-tert-butyl lactate used as chiral auxiliary), gave the corresponding alpha amino acid-type derivative in high chemical yield and optical purity. This allylation reaction represents a novel example of efficient long-range stereodifferentiation process. In the last part of the synthesis, a regioselective Heck-type cyclization reaction enabled preparation of the target tetrasubstituted exocycle and trisubtituted endocycle double bond derivatives.     

The first molybdenum dioxo compounds with eta 2-pyrazolate ligands: crystal structure and oxo transfer properties

Molybdenum dioxo compounds [MoO2Cl(eta 2-pz)] and [MoO2(eta 2-pz)2] with pz = eta (2)-3,5-di-tert-butylpyrazolate have been synthesized; crystallographic data, catalytic activity, and oxo transfer properties are described.     

One-pot three-component reaction for the synthesis of alpha-(aminoethyl)-alpha,beta-enones

[reaction: see text] The synthesis of alpha-substituted alpha,beta-enones by a new metal iodide-promoted one-pot three-component reaction involving commercially available cyclopropyl ketones, aldehydes, and secondary amines followed by base treatment is described.     

Asymptotic behavior of the Kohn-Sham exchange potential

The Kohn-Sham exchange potential of finite systems is shown to approach different asymptotic limits on nodal surfaces of the energetically highest-occupied orbital than in other regions. This leads to barrier-well structures in the near asymptotic region, which have a strong influence on virtual orbitals and thus on excitation energies. Common approximations for the exchange potential do not exhibit these features. These asymptotic structures, however, can be correctly described by effective exact-exchange methods. Conditions for the presence of an asymptotic barrier well in the full exchange-correlation potential are discussed.     

Diffraction-limited, 300-kW peak-power pulses from a coiled multimode fiber amplifier

We report a multimode, double-clad, Yb-doped fiber amplifier that produces diffraction-limited, 0.8-ns pulses with energies of 255 muJ and peak powers in excess of 300 kW at a repetition rate of ~8 kHz . Single-transverse-mode operation was obtained by bend-loss-induced mode filtering of the gain fiber.     

Spatial trapping of short pulses in Ti-indiffused LiNbO(3) waveguides

We show numerically and experimentally that spatial trapping can be induced in quadratic media even if the pump pulse's duration is shorter than the group-delay mismatch between fundamental wave and second-harmonic components. The influence of phase mismatch and pulse power on the trapping effect is discussed. Spatial, temporal, and spectral behaviors that accompany self-trapped propagation are highlighted.     

Study on Planar Whispering Gallery Dielectric Resonators. I. General Properties

Several basic properties of homogeneous planar Whispering Gallery dielectric resonators are investigated through a general approach. In particular the values for the minimum and maximum allowed radius, defined by irradiation and dielectric losses, respectively, are obtained in terms of the complex dielectric constant of the involved media. The same approach is employed in the analysis of the limit allowed frequencies of a fixed family of mode, leading to the definition of the ideal frequency band. The role of the transverse mode is then discussed, and the effective frequency band is introduced and determined both in simple disc and circular ring resonators. The extension of the effective band is limited at least by a factor 3, in terms of decades, in comparison to the extension of the ideal one; this limitation, due to the presence of transverse modes, can be overcome using suitable designed nonhomogeneous resonators, as discussed in a following companion paper.     

Complex response function of magnetic resonance spectrometers

A vectorial analysis of magnetic resonance spectrometers, based on traveling wave resonators and including the reference arm and the automatic control of frequency, has been developed. The proposed model, valid also for stationary wave resonators, gives the response function of the spectrometer for any working condition, including scalar detectors with arbitrary response law and arbitrary excitation frequency. The purely dispersive and purely absorptive linear responses are discussed in detail for different scalar detectors. The developed approach allows for optimizing the performances of the spectrometer and for obtaining the intrinsic lineshape of the sample in a very broad range of working conditions. More complex setups can be modeled following the proposed scheme.
