The anomalous magnetic moment of positive and negative muons

The anomalous g-factor a ≡ (g?2)/2 has been measured for muons of both charges in the Muon Storage Ring at CERN. The two results, a_μ⁺ = 1165910(12) × 10^?9 and a_μ^? = 1165936(12) × 10^?9, are in good agreement with each other, and combine to give a mean a_μ = 1165922(9) × 10^?9, which is very close to the most recent theoretical prediction 1165921(10) × 10^?9. For the experimental results, the total statistical and systematic error is given. The measurements thus confirm the remarkable QED calculation plus hadronic contribution, and serve as a precise verification of the CPT theorem for muons.     

A search for free quarks in deep inelastic muon scattering

A search was made at the CERN SPS for long-lived fractionally charged particles produced in deep inelastic muon interactions on a Be target using the existing muon beam line as a spectrometer. No such particles were found, leading to upper limits for the production cross section of the order of 10^?36 cm² for 200 GeV incident muon momentum and quark masses below 9 GeV for the $\text{2}\text{3}$ charge and 15 GeV for $\text{1}\text{3}$ charge.     

A study of trimuon events in 280 GeV muon interactions

In 280 GeV μ⁺ iron interactions the inelastic production of muon pairs has been observed in excess of QED processes. For energies greater than 20 GeV deposited in the target calorimeter the interactions are found to be mainly hadronic. Cross sections are presented for this process in the mass range 1?2.5 GeV/c² and in the kinematic regions covered by the apparatus acceptance. The data are in good agreement with a photon-gluon fusion model for charmed particle production.     

A measurement of the beam asymmetry parameter Σ for neutral pion photoproduction in the energy range 1.2–2.8 GeV

An experiment has been completed at the Daresbury synchrotron to measure the asymmetry in the photoproduction cross section of neutral pions on hydrogen, for photons polarised normal to and in the production plane. The source of polarised photons was coherent bremsstrahlung of electrons traversing the lattice structure of diamond and the polarisation P of the γ beam was calculated from the measured intensity of the coherent spike. The asymmetry parameter Σ, defined as Σ = (σ⊥ ? σ|)/(σ⊥ + σ|) where σ⊥(σ|) are the cross sections for photons polarised perpendicular (parallel) to the production plane, has been measured over a range of photon energies from 1.2 to 2.8 GeV and over a range of ?t (the square of the four-momentum transfer) from 0.13 (GeV/c)² to 1.4 (GeV/c)². A marked energy variation in the value of Σ is found over the energy region 1.6–1.8 GeV.     

Polarisation parameters in positive pion photoproduction

Measurements have been made of the polarisation parameters Σ, T and P for the process γp → π⁺n in the photon energy range 520–2250 MeV at c.m. angles between 30° and 120°. These data were obtained in a double polarisation experiment, using the polarised photon beam from the Daresbury electron synchrotron incident on a polarised proton target. The data are compared with predictions from current theoretical analyses.     

ϱ0 production in deep inelastic μ-p interactions

Inclusive ?⁰ meson production has been measured in 120 GeV and 280 GeV muon-proton interactions. Distributions of z and p_T² are presented. Primary ?⁰ production is found to be equal to that of π⁰ production within errors.     

Hadron production in 200 GeV μ-copper and μ-carbon deep inelastic interactions

The measurements of the z and p_T² distribution of hadrons produced in the interactions of 200 GeV muons with copper and carbon nuclei are shown in different x_Bj and virtual photon energy intervals. Effects of the jet scattering are seen at the lowest virtual photon energies while for energies above 70 GeV there is no evidence of these effects. Comparison with a theoretical model indicates that at high jet energies the parton fragmentation distance is greater than the nuclear radius and that the parton absorption cross section is less than 10 mb.
