A Lagrangean Heuristic for a Modular Capacitated Location Problem

This paper considers the Modular Capacitated Location Problem (MCLP) which consists of finding the location and capacity of the facilities, to serve a set of customers at a minimum total cost. Each customer has an associated demand and the capacity of each potential location must be chosen from a finite and discrete set of available capacities. Practical applications of this problem can be found in the location of warehouses, schools, health care services or other types of public services. For the MCLP different mixed integer linear programming models are proposed. The authors develop upper and lower bounds on the problem's optimal value and present computational results with randomly generated tests problems.

The quantum group structure associated with non-linearly extended Virasoro algebras

Recently, an infinite family of chiral Virasoro vertex operators, whose exchange algebra is given by the universalR-matrix ofSL(2) _q , has been constructed. In the present paper, the case of non-linearly (W-) extended Virasoro symmetries, related to the algebrasA _N,N>1, is considered along the same line. Contrary to the previous case (A ₁) the standardR-matrix ofSL(N+1)q does not come out, and a different solution of Yang and Baxter's equations is derived. A dynamic location problem with maximum decreasing capacities

In this paper a capacitated dynamic location problem with opening, closure and reopening of facilities is formulated and a primal-dual heuristic that can solve this problem is described. The problem formulated considers the situation where a facility is open (or reopens) with a certain maximum capacity that decreases as clients are assigned to that facility during its operating periods. This problem is NP-hard. Computational results are presented and discussed. This research was partially supported by research project POCTI/ISFL-1/152 and POCTI/MAT/139/2001.     

"On the Collander equation": protein partitioning in polymer/polymer aqueous two-phase systems

Distribution coefficients of randomly selected proteins were measured in aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) formed by different combinations of Dextran-75 (Dex), Ficoll-70, polyethylene glycol-8000 (PEG), hydroxypropyl starch-100 (PES), and Ucon50HB5100 (Ucon, a random copolymer of ethylene glycol and propylene glycol) at particular polymer concentrations, all containing 0.15M NaCl in 0.01 M phosphate buffer, pH 7.4. Most of the proteins in the PEG-Ucon system precipitated at the interface. In the other ATPSs, namely, PES-PEG, PES-Ucon, Ficoll-PEG, Ficoll-Ucon, and in Dex-PEG and Dex-Ucon described earlier the distribution coefficients for the proteins were correlated according to the solvent regression equation: lnKi=aiolnKo+bio, where Ki and Ko are the distribution coefficients for any protein in the ith and oth two-phase systems. Coefficients aio and bio are constants, the values of which depend upon the particular compositions of the two-phase systems under comparison.     

Sulfur as a supplementary filler for bitumen-silica composites

Summary Dynamic-mechanical properties of bitumen-sulfur mixtures, containing more than 10% sulfur, change with time up to one month ageing. Composites were prepared by adding silica to these mixtures. In general, the time-temperature-superposition principle applies. Moreover, the viscoelastic properties of the bitumen matrix are not significantly altered by the presence of sulfur. However, the triple time-temperature-interfacial area equivalence principle could not be verified, in this instance, since the interfacial area between sulfur, the new filler, and bitumen could not be established.With 11 figures     

Biocompatible in-tube solid phase microextraction coupled with liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection for determination of interferon α in plasma samples

The present work demonstrates the successful application of automated biocompatible in-tube solid-phase microextraction coupled with liquid chromatography (in-tube SPME/LC) for determination of interferon alpha(2a) (IFN α(2a)) in plasma samples for therapeutic drug monitoring. A restricted access material (RAM, protein-coated silica) was employed for preparation of a lab-made biocompatible in-tube SPME capillary that enables the direct injection of biological fluids as well as the simultaneous exclusion of macromolecules by chemical diffusion barrier and drug pre-concentration. The in-tube SPME variables, such as sample volume, draw/eject volume, number of draw-eject cycles, and desorption mode were optimized, to improve the sensitivity of the proposed method. The IFN α(2a) analyses in plasma sample were carried out within 25min (sample preparation and LC analyses). The response of the proposed method was linear over a dynamic range, from 0.06 to 3.0MIUmL(-1), with correlation coefficient equal to 0.998. The interday precision of the method presented coefficient of variation lower than 8%. The proposed automated method has adequate analytical sensitivity and selectivity for determination of IFN α(2a) in plasma samples for therapeutic drug monitoring.     

Aminodi(hetero)arylamines in the thieno[3,2-b]pyridine series: synthesis, effects in human tumor cells growth, cell cycle analysis, apoptosis and evaluation of toxicity using non-tumor cells

Three aminodi(hetero)arylamines were prepared via a palladium-catalyzed C-N Buchwald-Hartwig coupling of methyl 3-aminothieno[3,2-b]pyridine-2-carboxylate with different bromonitrobenzenes, followed by reduction of the nitro groups of the coupling products to the corresponding amino compounds. The aminodi(hetero)arylamines thus obtained were evaluated for their growth inhibitory effect on four human tumor cell lines MCF-7 (breast adenocarcinoma), A375-C5 (melanoma), NCI-H460 (non-small cell lung cancer) and HepG(2) (hepatocellular carcinoma). The toxicity to non-tumor cells was also evaluated using a porcine liver primary cell culture (PLP1), established by us. The aminodi(hetero)arylamine with the NH(2) group in the ortho position and an OMe group in the para position to the NH of the di(hetero)arylamine, is the most promising compound giving the lowest GI(50) values (1.30-1.63 μM) in all the tested human tumor cell lines, presenting no toxicity to PLP1 at those concentrations. The effect of this compound on the cell cycle and induction of apoptosis was analyzed in the NCI-H460 cell line. It was observed that it altered the cell cycle profile causing a decrease in the percentage of cells in the G0/G1 phase and an increase of the apoptosis levels.
