We report the operation of an all-optical set-reset (SR) flip-flop based on vertical cavity semiconductor optical amplifiers (VCSOAs). This flip-flop is cascadable, has low optical switching power (~10 microW), and has the potential to be integrated on a small footprint (~100 microm(2)). The flip-flop is composed of two cross-coupled electrically pumped VCSOA inverters and uses the principles of cross-gain modulation, polarization gain anisotropy, and highly nonlinear gain characteristics to achieve flip-flop functionality. We believe that, when integrated on chip, this type of all-optical flip-flop opens new prospects for implementing all-optical fast memories and timing regeneration circuits.  相似文献

A three-dimensional (3D) ring-shaped laser trap has been built using axicons. The diameter of this laser trap ranges from 70 to 140 mum and is adjusted by simply changing the position of one axicon in the optical path. Parallel 3D trapping of 5 mum silica microspheres and 3D confinement of cells along the ring are demonstrated. In this system the special optical properties of axicons are used to create a continuous annular trap with high power efficiency and a constant numerical aperture. This new approach, without any mechanical scanning, offers significant potential for applications in cell motility analysis and biotropism studies.  相似文献

We describe the creation and implementation of a near-field scanning solid immersion microscope that is specifically tailored for use in microfluidic systems. The microscope comprises a newly fabricated Weierstrass solid immersion lens (SIL), which is detached from its substrate and is free floating in the fluid, and a laser optical tweezer, which serves both as a trapping beam for alignment and positioning of the SIL and as a near-field scanning beam that images the sample through the SIL. A discussion of the SIL's fabrication method is presented along with experimental results that demonstrate the effectiveness of our microscope design.  相似文献

The separation of nanoparticles from micron size particles in high conductance buffers was achieved using an AC dielectrophoretic (DEP) microarray device with hydrogel over-coated microelectrodes. While nanoparticles could be selectively concentrated into high field regions directly over the platinum microelectrodes, micro-bubbling and electrode darkening was also observed. For similar experiments using un-coated microelectrodes, SEM analysis showed severe erosion of the platinum microelectrodes and fusion of nanoparticles due to the aggressive electrochemistry.  相似文献

We report, for the first time to our knowledge, the operation of a cascadable, low-optical-switching-power(~10 microW) small-area (~100 microm(2)) high-speed (80 ps fall time) all-optical inverter. This inverter employs cross-gain modulation, polarization gain anisotropy, and highly nonlinear gain characteristics of an electrically pumped vertical-cavity semiconductor optical amplifier (VCSOA). The measured transfer characteristics of such an optical inverter resemble those of standard electronic metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor-based inverters exhibiting high noise margin and high extinction ratio (~9.3 dB), making VCSOAs an ideal building block for all-optical logic and memory.  相似文献

The composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in a soil is the product of a variety of soil processes. Changes in the composition of DOM in water discharged from soil should, therefore, give an important insight into modifications in these soil processes. We hypothesise that these processes in soils, under different grassland management regimes, would be affected to different extents by the short-term disturbance of a storm event and that evidence of this could be detected in delta(13)C and delta(15)N signatures in drainage and surface runoff waters. During a storm event we collected discharge waters from 1 ha grassland lysimeters, with or without artificial drainage, which received contrasting fertiliser inputs, and delta(13)C and delta(15)N signatures were determined. Changes in (13)C enrichment during the storm event were clearly identifiable, as were differences between plots for (13)C and (15)N, illustrating that this technique has potential to be a useful tool for identifying and investigating short- and long-term changes in soil organic matter dynamics. Pseudomonas putida L-methionine γ-lyase (PpMGL) has been recognized as an efficient anticancer agent, however, its antigenicity and stability remain as critical challenges for its clinical use. From our studies, Aspergillus flavipes L-methionine γ-lyase (AfMGL) displayed more affordable biochemical properties than PpMGL. Thus, the objective of this work was to comparatively assess the functional properties of AfMGL and PpMGL via stability of their internal aldimine linkage, tautomerism of pyridoxal 5′-phosphate (PLP) and structural stability responsive to physicochemical factors. The internal Schiff base of AfMGL and PpMGL have the same stability to hydroxylamine and human serum albumin. Acidic pHs resulted in strong cleavage of the internal Schiff base, inducing the unfolding of MGLs, compared to neutral-alkaline pHs. At λ 280 nm excitation, both AfMGL and PpMGL have identical fluorescence emission spectra at λ 335 nm for the intrinsic tryptophan and λ 560 nm for the internal Schiff base. The maximum PLP tautomeric shift of ketoenamine to enolimine was detected at acidic pH causing complete enzyme unfolding, subunits dissociation and tautomeric shift of intrinsic PLP, rather than neutral-alkaline ones. The T m of AfMGL and PpMGL in presence of thermal stabilizer/ destabilizer was assayed by DSF. The T m of AfMGL and PpMGL was 73.1 °C and 74.4 °C, respectively, suggesting the higher proximity to the tertiary structure of both enzymes. The T m of AfMGL and PpMGL was slightly increased by trehalose and EDTA in contrast to guanidine HCl and urea. The active site and PLP-binding domains are identically conserved in both AfMGL and PpMGL.  相似文献

In biomedical research and diagnostics, it is a significant challenge to directly isolate and identify rare cells and potential biomarkers in blood, plasma and other clinical samples. Additionally, the advent of bionanotechnology is leading to numerous drug delivery approaches that involve encapsulation of drugs and imaging agents within nanoparticles, which now will also have to be identified and separated from blood and plasma. Alternating current (AC) electrokinetic techniques such as dielectrophoresis (DEP) offer a particularly attractive mechanism for the separation of cells and nanoparticles. Unfortunately, present DEP techniques require the dilution of blood/plasma, thus making the technology less suitable for clinical sample preparation. Using array devices with microelectrodes over-coated with porous hydrogel layers, AC electric field conditions have been found which allow the separation of DNA nanoparticles to be achieved under high-conductance (ionic strength) conditions. At AC frequencies in the 3000 Hz to 10,000 Hz range and 10 volts peak-to-peak, the separation of 10-microm polystyrene particles into low field regions, and 60-nm DNA-derivatized nanoparticles and 200-nm nanoparticles into high-field regions was carried out in 149 mM 1xPBS buffer (1.68 S/m). These results may allow AC electrokinetic systems to be developed that can be used with clinically relevant samples under physiological conditions.  相似文献
