Purpose

To evaluate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and to determine the correlation of MRI findings with histopathology and Mayo End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score.

Materials and Methods

Thirty patients (18 males, 12 females; mean age: 57±8.9 years; age range: 35–71 years) with histopathologically proven NASH who underwent MRI examinations between January 2001 and October 2005 were included in the study. Two radiologists retrospectively reviewed all magnetic resonance (MR) examinations in consensus to evaluate the presence and extent of predetermined findings of NASH including liver steatosis, early patchy liver enhancement indicating inflammation and liver fibrosis. The findings detected on MRI were correlated and compared to histopathological findings and MELD score by using nonparametric Spearman correlation coefficient and Kruskal–Wallis analysis of variance.

Results

Liver steatosis was observed in 10 of 30 patients; early patchy liver enhancement, in 8 of 30 patients and liver fibrosis in 19 of 30 patients on MR images. Liver fibrosis was reticular in all these patients. There were statistically significant moderate correlations between MRI findings of liver steatosis and histopathologic grades of steatosis (r=0.43; P<.05), and between MRI findings of fibrosis and histopathologic stages of fibrosis (r=0.61; P<.001). Early patchy enhancement did not demonstrate statistically significant correlation with inflammation (P=.28). There was no statistically significant overall correlation between MRI findings of NASH and MELD score.

Conclusion

MRI findings of liver steatosis and fibrosis in NASH showed moderate correlations with histopathologic grades of steatosis and stages of fibrosis, but MRI findings of NASH did not demonstrate any significant correlations with MELD score.  相似文献

Various approaches to Quantum Gravity (such as String Theory and Doubly Special Relativity), as well as black hole physics predict a minimum measurable length, or a maximum observable momentum, and related modifications of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle to a so-called Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP). We propose a GUP consistent with String Theory, Doubly Special Relativity and black hole physics, and show that this modifies all quantum mechanical Hamiltonians. When applied to an elementary particle, it implies that the space which confines it must be quantized. This suggests that space itself is discrete, and that all measurable lengths are quantized in units of a fundamental length (which can be the Planck length). On the one hand, this signals the breakdown of the spacetime continuum picture near that scale, and on the other hand, it can predict an upper bound on the quantum gravity parameter in the GUP, from current observations. Furthermore, such fundamental discreteness of space may have observable consequences at length scales much larger than the Planck scale.  相似文献

Plasma injectors are a source of pulsed, high momentum and temperature fluid. This fluid can serve as a very efficient reactive mixing and accelerating agent in several applications including chemical waste decomposition and hard materials coating. It can also serve as an efficient medium for synthesis of nano-particles and their deposition on various substrates. In those applications tuning the momentum and the thermodynamic properties of the plasma jet is of paramount importance as the quality of the interaction strongly depends on them. This Letter proposes a method and a model that will allow additional tuning to the thermodynamic properties of the plasma jet by adding an extension to the discharge zone. A steady state model of processes taking place in a realistic confined capillary discharge system is presented. A comparison between this system and the parameters characterizing a discharge in a “conventional” ablative system is presented. The results obtained indicate that the non-discharge zone may provide an additional degree of freedom to optimize the system's performance. It enhances the control of the plasma parameters that allows optimal and predictable momentum control over the plasma jet. The theoretical predictions for the plasma parameters agree well with experimentally obtained data.  相似文献

Methods for the removal of small symmetric matrix elements based on the Euclidean norm of the error matrix are presented in this article. In large scale Hartree-Fock and Kohn-Sham calculations it is important to be able to enforce matrix sparsity while keeping errors under control. Truncation based on some unitary-invariant norm allows for control of errors in the occupied subspace as described in (Rubensson et al. J Math Phys 49, 032103). The Euclidean norm is unitary-invariant and does not grow intrinsically with system size and is thus suitable for error control in large scale calculations. The presented truncation schemes repetitively use the Lanczos method to compute the Euclidean norms of the error matrix candidates. Ritz value convergence patterns are utilized to reduce the total number of Lanczos iterations.  相似文献

The binary surface interactions of some novel cationic diacyl glycerol arginine-based surfactants with model phospholipids, which are often used as model membrane components, are studied at 25 °C in aqueous solutions of 0.1 M sodium chloride. The surfactants are 1,2-dimyristoyl-rac-glycero-3-O-(Nα-acetyl-l-arginine) hydrochloride (1414RAc) and 1,2-dilauroyl-rac-glycero-3-O-(Nα-acetyl-l-arginine) hydrochloride (1212RAc), and they are important as potential antimicrobial agents which are biodegradable and with less toxicity than other cationic surfactants. The phospholipids are 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (DMPC). The equilibrium and dynamic surface tension of each surfactant, each phospholipid, and some of their binary mixtures are studied using the bubble surfactometry method at constant area or pulsating area conditions. In addition, the surface densities of pure and mixed monolayers of these compounds at the air/water interface are probed with infrared reflection–absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS). Steady state and dynamic surface tension synergism, or antisynergism in one case, and synergistic adsorption effects are detected for the mixed dispersions studied. The enhanced adsorption detected with IRRAS, and the enhanced dynamic and steady state surface tension lowering indicate strong miscibility and net attractive interactions between the compounds in the adsorbed mixed monolayers.  相似文献

We consider a productive asset, called equipment or capital good, and we examine the properties of, as well as the interactions between, the operating policies, which are determined by its optimal utilization and maintenance, and the capital policy of scrapping, which defines the optimal time when the productive asset is retired from its current use. Starting with an abstract model and using the approach of optimal control, initially we characterize the various types of equipment by assigning to them a single total profit index, which indicates how the above policies affect the flow of operating revenues plus capital gains or losses. This index is a function of market-determined prices. So using it we then investigate how the operating and capital policies are influenced by the rate of discount, the price of new equipment, and the rise or fall of the price of new equipment relative to the value of its output. Among other interesting results, we find that the effects of these prices on the nature and interactions of optimal policies depend crucially on whether the equipment is of the usual profit making type, where output is the main source of revenue, or of the antique type, where the main source of revenue is capital gains.  相似文献

A new method of making physically self-assembled monolayers (PSAMs) on hydrophilic solid surfaces is presented. This method uses a mixture of a nonpolar solvent, such as hexane, and a strong polar solvent, such as ethanol, to dissolve the lipids. The deposition of two lecithin lipids, dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and dilauroylphosphatidylcholine (DLPC), has been studied. These lipids physically self-assemble, or adsorb, onto hydrophilic silicon oxide/silicon surfaces when such surfaces are in contact with the lipid solution. The adsorbed layers were probed with ex-situ attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy, ellipsometry, contact angle measurements, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The thicknesses of the adsorbed monolayers are about 2.8 +/- 0.2 nm for DPPC and 2.0 +/- 0.2 nm for DLPC, as determined by ellipsometry and AFM. Smooth, uniform monolayers of controlled surface density are formed. The surface density of adsorbed layers is comparable to those of close-packed lipid monolayers, as calculated from the ellipsometry and ATR-IR results. Producing controlled-thickness monolayers has applications in boundary lubrication, biomaterials, sensor technologies, and electronics. The method can be used for depositing many biological surfactants or lipids without the need to modify these surfactants chemically to form chemical bonds with the surfaces, as required by the usual chemical SAMs. Moreover, the new method has several advantages compared to the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method.  相似文献
