The Raschig synthesis of hydroxyethylhydrazine (HEH) is studied, that is, the reaction of monochloramine on ethanolamine. The formation of HEH is monitored by UV spectrometry, and the influence of temperature and pH is studied. The primary reaction is an SN2‐type mechanism, whereas the main secondary reaction is the oxidation of HEH by monochloramine. This reaction is also monitored by UV spectrometry, and the oxidation product is identified by GC–MS analysis, showing the formation of hydroxyethylhydrazone. The reaction mechanisms and the rate constants were determined, and the results permit establishing the main reactions occurring during HEH synthesis. These reactions were validated in a concentrated medium, with the systematic study of the influence of the molar ratio p ([HEH]0/[NH2Cl]0) and the final sodium hydroxide concentration and temperature. A comparison is made with the other synthesis process already published, that is, the alkylation of hydrazine by either chloroethanol or epoxide. © 2011 Wiley Peiodicals, Inc. Direct numerical simulation (DNS) has been performed to study the channel flow over a backward‐facing step at a Reynolds number Reb=5600 based on the step height h and the inflow bulk velocity Ub. A dynamic method has been used in order to generate realistic turbulent inflow conditions. The results upstream of the step compared well with the fully developed channel flow. New imidazoles were easily prepared from 2,3‐diamino‐1,4‐naphthoquinone and stoichiometric quantities of the appropriate aldehydes in dimethyl sulfoxide as a solvent. The reaction proceeded for few hours. The procedure can be generalized to different classes of aldehydes. 2‐Methyl‐1H‐naphtho[2,3‐d]imidazole‐4,9‐dione was also obtained in good yield during refluxing of 2,3‐diaminonaphthoquinone in acetic acid. Scatterometry is a well established technique currently utilized in research, as well as in industrial applications, to retrieve
the properties of a given scatterer (the target) by looking at how the light coming from a certain source is diffracted in
the far field. Currently the light source is often a discharge lamp that, after wavelength filtering, can be thought as a
quasi-monochromatic, but spatially incoherent, source. In the present work, benefits of using a focused spot from a spatially
coherent light source, as that emitted by a laser, are investigated on a theoretical viewpoint. The focused spot is scanned
over the object of interest and, for each scan position, a far-field diffraction pattern is recorded. Our results show that
spatially coherent light can sensibly increase the accuracy of the technique with respect to the target’s geometrical profile. 相似文献
