Zinc oxide nanoparticles immobilized on graphene flake

Interactions of ZnO nanoparticles with graphene oxide in isopropanol were studied; graphene oxide was shown to perform as an efficient substrate to immobilize zinc oxide nanoparticles on its surface. Interactions of nanocomposites consisting of graphene oxide-zinc oxide nanoparticles with supercritical isopropanol were studied. The conversion of graphene oxide into graphene does not appreciably changes the composition, morphology, or structure of ZnO nanoparticles.

Search for tetrylene structures that can exhibit catalytic activity: a quantum chemical approach

We present the results of a quantum chemical study of a series of tetrylenes (silylenes, germylenes, and stannylenes), aimed at identifying structural and electronic factors affecting the width of the HOMO—LUMO energy gap. Compounds considered in this work contain atoms of Group 14 elements in both di- and tricoordinate states due to additional transannular interaction. They bear substituents bonded to the atom of the Group 14 element through atoms with and without lone electron pairs. It was found that tetrylenes stabilized by both additional transannular interaction and direct bonds between the atom of the Group 14 element and the heteroatom containing a lone electron pair (in this situation the ligand acts as n-donor) are characterized by wide HOMO—LUMO energy gaps, the gap in stannylenes always being narrower than in the related silylenes and germylenes. Localization of the HOMO and LUMO in certain tetrylenes is analyzed.

     

Subdiffractive discrete cavity solitons

We describe what we believe to be novel types of discrete cavity solitons in nonlinear waveguide arrays that are driven by an external holding beam. We demonstrate that a holding beam with a definite inclination drives the system in a subdiffractive regime and allows the formation of stable discrete cavity solitons. We predict the existence of both bright and dark moving midband discrete cavity solitons for an identical set of system parameters for both focusing and defocusing Kerr nonlinearities.     

Umbilic point screening in random optical fields

Umbilic points--singular points of curvature characterized by a fractional topological charge q=+/-1/2--are the most numerous of all special points in the landscape of random optical fields (speckle patterns), outnumbering maxima, minima, saddle points, and optical vortices. To the best of our knowledge, we present the first experimental evidence that positive and negative umbilic points screen one another. Theory predicts that in the absence of screening the charge variance in a bounded region is proportional to the area of the region, whereas in the presence of screening the variance is drastically reduced and is proportional to the perimeter. Our data confirm this latter prediction and provide the first estimates of the screening lengths for umbilic points of the intensity and of the amplitude (field modulus).
