From nitrides to carbides: topotactic synthesis of the eta-carbides Fe3Mo3C and Co3Mo3C

The molybdenum bimetallic interstitial carbides Fe(3)Mo(3)C and Co(3)Mo(3)C have been synthesized by temperature-programmed reaction (TPR) between the molybdenum bimetallic interstitial nitrides Fe(3)Mo(3)N and Co(3)Mo(3)N and a flowing mixture of CH(4) and H(2) diluted in Ar. These compounds have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, laser Raman spectroscopy, elemental analysis, energy dispersive analysis of X rays, thermal analysis (in air) and scanning electron microscopy (field emission). Their structures have been refined from X-ray powder diffraction data. These carbides crystallize in the cubic system, space group Fd3m[a= 11.11376(6) and 11.0697(3)[Angstrom] for Fe and Co compounds, respectively].     

A general organocatalyst for direct alpha-functionalization of aldehydes: stereoselective C-C, C-N, C-F, C-Br, and C-S bond-forming reactions. Scope and mechanistic insights

The development of a general organocatalyst for the alpha-functionalization of aldehydes, via an enamine intermediate, is presented. Based on optically active alpha,alpha-diarylprolinol silyl ethers, the scope and applications of this catalyst for the stereogenic formation of C-C, C-N, C-F, C-Br, and C-S bonds are outlined. The reactions all proceed in good to high yields and with excellent enantioselectivities. Furthermore, we will present mechanistic insight into the reaction course applying nonlinear effect studies, kinetic resolution, and computational investigations leading to an understanding of the properties of the alpha,alpha-diarylprolinol silyl ether catalysts.     

A re-statement of the Hohenberg–Kohn theorem and its extension to finite subspaces

Bearing in mind the insight into the Hohenberg–Kohn theorem for Coulomb systems provided recently by Kryachko (Int J Quantum Chem 103:818, 2005), we present a re-statement of this theorem through an elaboration on Lieb’s proof as well as an extension of this theorem to finite subspaces. Synthesis of 1-(4-substituted)benzyl-6-hydroxyisoquinolines with potential activity on NA+,K+-atpase

The synthesis of 1-(4-substituted)benzyl-6-hydroxyisoquinolines, to be evaluated in the displacement of the specific ³H-ouabain binding to Na⁺,K⁺-ATPase, is described. The key step involved a cyclization to the isoquinoline ring under Pictet-Gams conditions which was best performed with the 6-hydroxy group protected as the benzyl ether. When an unsaturated ester group was present in position 4 of the 1-benzyl group, this was best introduced before the cyclization step, since the IIeck reaction on 1-(4-bromobenzyl)-6-hydroxyisoquinoline ( 8 ) with acrylic acid derivatives was not successful in all cases.     

A preliminary observation of additive thermodynamic contribution of pendant arms to the complexation of calixarene derivatives with mercury(II)

An additive thermodynamic contribution of pendant arms to the complexation of calixarene derivatives with mercury(II) in acetonitrile is for the first time demonstrated.     

Integrated lot-sizing and one-dimensional cutting stock problem with usable leftovers

This paper addresses the integration of the lot-sizing problem and the one-dimensional cutting stock problem with usable leftovers (LSP-CSPUL). This integration aims to minimize the cost of cutting items from objects available in stock, allowing the bringing forward production of items that have known demands in a future planning horizon. The generation of leftovers, that will be used to cut future items, is also allowed and these leftovers are not considered waste in the current period. Inventory costs for items and leftovers are also considered. A mathematical model for the LSP-CSPUL is proposed to represent this problem and an approach, using the simplex method with column generation, is proposed to solve the linear relaxation of this model. A heuristic procedure, based on a relax-and-fix strategy, was also proposed to find integer solutions. Computational tests were performed and the results show the contributions of the proposed mathematical model, as well as, the quality of the solutions obtained using the proposed method.

     

Effect of acetate on ferrihydrite crystallization

Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to follow the aging of ferrihydrite with different amounts of acetate, to achieve more crystalline products. Mössbauer spectra of fresh samples did not show any magnetic components. After two years aging, the solids presented crystalline fractions. Hematite formation was inhibited as acetate content increased in solids. For an acetate/iron molar ratio equal to 0.63 goethite was formed instead of hematite. X-ray diffraction confirmed these results. This work shows that synthetic samples can be used for elucidating the anti-hematitic effect of organic matter already detected in soils.     

Studies on monobactams II. Synthesis and β-lactamase inhibitory activity of 4α-methyl-3-[(thien-2-yl)-methylene]-2-azetidinone-1-sulfonate

Two monobactam derivatives, potassium 4-methyl-(3E)-[(thien-2-yl)methylene]-2-azetidinone-1-sulfonate and its (3Z)-isomer, were prepared and evaluated for their -lactamase inhibitory activities. Binding evaluation of isoform 1 fromCratylia mollis lectin to human mammary tissues

The phenomenon of altered carbohydrates in transformed cell surfaces has been studied through histochemical techniques using lectins. Specific binding patterns to normal and transformed mammary tissues were evaluated by Isoform 1 fromCratylia mollis lectin (Cra Iso 1). Protocols using a direct method, incubation of Cra Iso I conjugated to peroxidase (Cra Iso 1-Per) with mammary tissues, followed by diaminobenzidine and hydrogen peroxidase interaction, were performed. Neoplastic tissues, marked by Cra Iso 1, showed a higher intensity of staining than normal ones, in comparison withCanavalia ensiformis lectin, Concanavalin A (Con A), conjugated to peroxidase (Con A-Per). The assay with Cra Iso 1 also indicated a possible utilization of this lectin to characterize normal and transformed mammary cells.
