Enzymatic resolution and evaluation of enantiomers of cis-5'-hydroxythalidomide

The straightforward synthesis of both enantiomers of cis-5'-hydroxythalidomide, a major metabolite of thalidomide, has been accomplished by enzymatic kinetic resolution of a racemic substrate catalyzed by Pseudomonas stutzeri lipase TL. cis-5'-Hydroxythalidomide shows resistance to racemization (and epimerization) at physiological pH. A tube formation assay to assess the ability to inhibit angiogenesis revealed that cis-5'-hydroxythalidomides are inactive.     

Rh-catalyzed intermolecular and enantioselective [4 + 2] cycloaddition of 1,3-dienes with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate

A Rh-BINAP complex catalyzed an intermolecular and enantioselective [4 + 2] cycloaddition of 1-monosubstituted, 1,1- or 1,2-disubstituted buta-1,3-dienes with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate to give chiral cyclohexa-1,4-dienes.     

Interplay of superconductivity and rattling phenomena in beta-pyrochlore KOs2O6 studied by photoemission spectroscopy

The electronic structure near the Fermi level (EF) of the beta-pyrochlore superconductor KOs2O6 is studied using laser-excited ultrahigh-resolution photoemission spectroscopy. The superconducting gap clearly opens across the superconducting transition (Tc=9.6 K), with the strong electron-phonon coupling value of 2Delta(0)/k B Tc>or=4.56. A fitting analysis identifies clear anomalies at Tp=7.5 K in the temperature dependencies of the superconducting gap size and the quasiparticle relaxation lifetime. These anomalies and the fine spectral structures arising from phonons suggest that the existence of the rattling behavior of K ions significantly affects the superconductivity in KOs2O6.     

Direct intermolecular hydroacylation of N,N-dialkylacrylamides with aldehydes catalyzed by a cationic rhodium(I)/dppb complex

A cationic rhodium(I)/dppb complex catalyzed direct intermolecular hydroacylation of N,N-dialkylacrylamides with both aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes has been achieved through the stabilization of acylrhodium intermediates by alkene chelation to rhodium. This method represents a versatile new route to gamma-ketoamides in view of the high atom economy and commercial availability of substrates.

Metabolic analysis of the cinnamate/monolignol pathway in Carthamus tinctorius seeds by a stable-isotope-dilution method

The present study established a system for comprehensive metabolic analysis of the cinnamate/monolignol and lignan pathways by the use of a stable-isotope-dilution method. The system was successfully applied to characterization of the pathways in Carthamus tinctorius cv. Round-leaved White maturing seeds in combination with administration of stable-isotope-labelled precursors. Experimental results obtained using this technique strongly suggested the intermediacy of ferulic acid in lignan biosynthesis in the plant.     

Design of an anaerobic sample chamber for fluorescence measurements compatible with the Lytle detector

A sample chamber has been developed that is compatible with the commercially available Lytle ion chamber with soller slits. The key features are (i) the sample position can be shifted vertically without changing the geometry with respect to the soller slits and ion chamber, (ii) the gas‐tight structure makes it possible for experiments to work with samples that require anaerobic conditions.
