Topological analysis of the structure-mesomorphous property ralationship

The use of topological indices to reveal the relationship between molecular structure and mesomorphous properties is discussed. Mathematical models for classification of mesophase types are proposed. The effect of molecular structure and attractive ability on phase transition temperatures is described. Purification of 3-ethoxycarbonylquinuclidine and its conversion to 3-quinuclidinecarboxylic acid and 3-quinuclidinylmethanol

3-Ethoxycarbonylquinuclidine obtained by the Grob method is a mixture of 3-ethoxycarbonyl-1-azabicylo-[2.2.2]- and, according to ¹³C NMR data, 5-ethoxycarbonyl-5-azatricyclo[3.2.1.0^2,7]octanes (1621). 3-Ethoxy-carbonylquinuclidine was purified by recrystallization of the hydrochloride, hydrolyzed by water to 3-quinuclidinecarboxylic acid, and reduced by LiAlH₄ to 3-quinuclidinylmethanol.Translated from Khimiya Geterotsiklicheskikh Soedinenii, No. 11, 1509–1512, November, 1992.     

Lifetime measurements of two-photon excited vibronic levels in the low pressure limit: naphthalene

Single vibronic lifetimes of two-photon excited states are measured in the low pressure limit for naphthalene. The two-photon spectrum, besides yielding new states in S₁, is also free of the interference from the neighborhood of the S₂, known from one-photon experiments, and hence unperturbed lifetimes can be measured to higher excess energies. The overall pattern of lifetimes with excess energy including both one-photon and two-photon states shows that the vibronic structure is subordinate to an overall monotonic decrease, much as found earlier for β-naphthylamine. This indicates, at least for naphthalene, that radiationless processes into triplets are dominated by Franck—Condon factors and not by vibronic inductions and promoting modes.     

α-Anions—VIII : Dithioesters and ketene mercaptals from aliphatic acids and esters

Carbon disulfide reacts with the α-anions of carboxylate salts and esters to form intermediate salts,

provides a new pathway to two classes of compounds: dithioesters and ketene mercaptals. The reaction produced the first carboxylated derivatives of dithioesters and ketene mercaptals. Examples of 2-carboxylated dithioesters and ketene mercaptals as well as their decarboxylated derivatives have been prepared and characterized.     

Synthesis and optical properties of nanohybrids in the system constituted by silica and lanthanide phosphoramide complexes

Sol-gel process of hydrolytic polycondensation of tetramethoxysilane with trimethoxysilyl derivatives of lanthanide phosphoramide complexes was studied in order to obtain photoluminescent organic-inorganic hybrid materials. Phosphorus-containing Small Rings: X. Phosphorylation of Derivatives of 1-Methyl-2,2-dichlorocyclopropanecarboxylic Acid

Reaction of derivatives of 1-methyl-2,2-dichlorocyclopropanecarboxylic acid with three- and four-coordinate phosphorus acids was studied. It was established that the nucleophilic substitution on the carbonyl carbon atom proceeds without cleavage of the three-membered ring and leads to new types of phosphorus-containing cyclopropanes. The products were found to enhance the germination energy and laboratory germination of cereal, legume, and vegetable seeds.     

Simultaneous determination of cefazolin in rat blood and brain by microdialysis and microbore liquid chromatography

A sensitive microbore liquid chromatographic method combined with the minimally invasive technique of microdialysis was devised for simultaneously and continuously monitoring the levels of unbound blood and brain cefazolin in rats. Microdialysis probes were inserted into the jugular vein and brain striatum for blood and brain sampling, respectively. Chromatographic conditions consisted of a mobile phase of methanol-acetonitrile-100 mM monosodium phosphoric acid (20:10:70, v/v, pH 4.5) pumped through a microbore reversed-phase column at a flow rate of 0.05 mL/min. The ultraviolet detection wavelength was set at 270 nm. An on-line design allowed direct and continuous analysis of protein-free samples in the dialysate. Microdialysis probes, being home-made, were screened for acceptable in vivo recovery. Chromatographic resolution and detection were validated for response linearity as well as intra-day and inter-day variabilities. This method was then applied to pharmacokinetic profiling of protein unbound cefazolin in both the blood and brain following intravenous administration (10 mg/kg, i.v., n = 6). Rapid appearance of cefazolin in the rat brain striatal dialysate following drug injection suggested good blood-brain barrier penetration. According to a non-compartmental pharmacokinetics model, the area under the concentration (AUC) vs time ratio of cefazolin in rat brain and blood was 6%.

Effect of substitution of Na⁺ by pyridinium on the surface and pore structures of montmorillonite is studied by CCl₄ vapor adsorption.     

Bistable ferroelectric liquid crystal photoswitch triggered by a dithienylethene dopant

The spontaneous polarization (PS) of a ferroelectric liquid crystal is modulated reversibly by photocyclization of the dopant 1,2-bis[5'-(4' '-heptyloxyphenyl)-2'-methylthien-3'-yl]perfluorocyclopentene. The magnitude of PS photomodulation increases with dopant concentration up to 3 mol %, and the resulting photoswitch is fatigue resistant and bistable. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of a bistable ferroelectric liquid crystal photoswitch to be reported in the literature.     

Dynamic mechanical and thermal behavior of thermotropic polyesters based on 4,4-alkane-1-ω-diylbis(4-hydroxybenzoic acid) and 4,4-(pentane-1,5-diyloxy)dibenzoic acid

Thermotropic polyesters based on 4,4^′-alkane-1-ω-diylbis(4-hydroxybenzoic acid) and 4,4^′-(pentane-1,5-diyloxy)dibenzoic acid were studied by dynamic mechanical spectroscopy, X-ray scattering, differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing microscopy. The effect of structure changes in the mesogenic group as well as in the flexible spacer, in particular the incorporation of Cl atoms into the mesogen, introduction of ether oxygen into spacer and the number of CH₂ groups in spacer was investigated. More complex mechanical and thermal behaviour was found on second heating scan than on first cooling of the isotropic melt; higher values of mechanical functions were observed in the isotropic state than in the nematic state of melts. While an even number of CH₂ groups and the presence of ether oxygen in spacer shifts the transition temperatures to higher values, the incorporation of Cl atoms into the mesogen leads to disappearance of ordered structure and the polymers behave as amorphous materials.
