Base-Catalyzed Reaction of Cyanoalkylphosphonates with Methanol

The equilibrium conversion of nitriles in the reaction of cyanoalkylphosphonates with methanol in the presence of sodium methylate, as determined by potentiometric titration with perchloric acid in nitromethane, varies from 58 to 17.7%. The practical yields of imidates were evaluated by a preparative procedure of isolation of purified imidates from the reaction mixtures (56-14%). Because of the low conversions of nitriles, the reaction is expedient to use only for preparing alkyl (dialkoxyphosphoryl)acetimidates.     

Chaos-controlling technique for suppressing self-modulation in backward-wave tubes

A method for suppressing self-modulation in backward-wave tubes is proposed. Additional delay is introduced into the feedback circuit, owing to which the output signal amplitude affects the electron beam current that enters into the interaction space. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the operating current in the single-frequency oscillation mode may be increased roughly twofold.     

Effects of Moisture and Stresses on the Structure and Properties of Polyester Resin

The results of a complex study of structural changes in a cured Norpol 440 polyester resin under the action of damp environment and mechanical loading are presented. A considerable effect of absorbed moisture on the structure and some characteristics of the material is revealed by using thermophysical methods and X-ray diffractometry. The joint effect of moisture and mechanical stress is estimated by investigating the creep in stationary and nonstationary moisture conditions. The anisotropy of the material structure formed during creep is evaluated from the results of dilatometric measurements. It is found that the degree of anisotropy of the material after creep accompanied by moisture sorption is higher than that after creep in the conditions of moisture equilibrium with atmosphere. It is established that the aftercure and relaxation of the residual creep deformation come to an end at heating to 80-85°C. At a further rise in temperature and repeated heating, changes in the material structure are not observed.     

Algebra with Quadratic Commutation Relations for an Axially Perturbed Coulomb–Dirac Field

The motion of a particle in the field of an electromagnetic monopole (in the Coulomb–Dirac field) perturbed by an axially symmetric potential after quantum averaging is described by an integrable system. Its Hamiltonian can be written in terms of the generators of an algebra with quadratic commutation relations. We construct the irreducible representations of this algebra in terms of second-order differential operators; we also construct its hypergeometric coherent states. We use these states in the first-order approximation with respect to the perturbing field to obtain the integral representation of the eigenfunctions of the original problem in terms of solutions of the model Heun-type second-order ordinary differential equation and present the asymptotic approximation of the corresponding eigenvalues.     

Variety of LaSrMnO structures induced by growth conditions and laser irradiation

Crystallographic phase transitions in perovskite-like LaSrMnO metallic oxides are studied. The transitions are induced when internal stresses generated during film synthesis (at temperatures between 450 and 730°C) vary (decrease or increase) upon subsequent irradiation by a KrF laser emitting in the UV range. As the synthesis temperature T _s grows, the rhombohedral-to-orthorhombic phase transition occurs at 650–670°C. The resistivity is shown to be either temperature-independent, ρ(T)=const, at T<T _crit, or varies and reaches a maximum, ρ(T)=ρ_max, at the Curie temperature T _c. Optical transmission spectra taken at photon energies ℏω=0.5–2.5 eV exhibit both a high (0.8–0.9) and low (0.1–0.3) transmission coefficient t, depending on the synthesis temperature. As follows from X-ray diffraction data, the laser irradiation causes a phase transition only in LaSrMnO films grown at T _s<650°C. Phases of different size scales appear: the long-range-order orthorhombic matrix and mesoscopic-range-order rhombohedral clusters are observed in the films grown at T _s=450–550°C and the rhombohedral matrix with orthorhombic clusters, in the films grown at T _s=550–650°C.     

Van der waals waves in free-surface liquids

It is shown that, along with gravity waves, surface and internal waves caused by van der Waals forces may exist in a liquid with a horizontal free surface. A dispersion relation is found by using the stepwise approximation for the coefficients of a wave equation derived for these waves. The surface waves are similar to surface gravity waves in dispersion and amplitude distribution but differ in frequency by several orders of magnitude. Another sequence of roots in the spectrum corresponds to internal van der Waals waves that have an upper frequency bound and the dispersion law typical of a multimode waveguide.     

A short synthesis of (±)-tecomanine via a Pauson-Khand-based route

The N-carboethoxy precursor to (±)-tecomanine has been prepared in 11 steps from 2-methyl-1-buten-3-yne. The key step, Pauson-Khand cyclization of a methylated 5-aza-6-nonen-1-yne succeeds, but only in low yield, a consequence of the dialkyl substitution about the azaenyne framework. Nevertheless, the overall sequence to that point is one of the more efficient to be described.     

Synthesis of New Plant Growth Regulators,Isomeric 1-(Dimethyloctyl)- and 1-Alkylpiperidinium and -morpholinium Halides by Telomerization of Isoprene with Secondary Amines

The known plant growth regulator, Al'den [1-(3,7-dimethyloctyl)-1-allylpiperidinium bromide], and also 1-(3,7-dimethyloctyl)-1-methylpiperidinium iodide were synthesized by treatment with allyl bromide and methyl iodide, respectively, of exhaustively hydrogenated 1-nerylpiperidine which was obtained by anionic telomerization of isoprene with piperidine. Various quaternary ammonium salts having a terpene sub- stituent with unnatural dimethyloctane skeleton, which effectively stimulate florification of Aster Chinensis L., were prepared by the action of alkyl halides on telomerization products derived from isoprene and piperidine or morpholine in the presence of palladium complexes.     

Reaction of Methylmalonyl Dichloride with Unsaturated Carboxamides

Methylmalonyl dichloride reacts with (2E)-3-phenylacrylamides and (2E)-3-(2-furyl)acrylamide to give the corresponding E-isomeric 2-substituted 4-hydroxy-5-methyl-6H-1,3-oxazin-6-ones. The reaction of methylmalonyl dichloride with acrylamide afforded N-(3-chloropropionyl)-2-methylmalonamic acid. The structure of the products was confirmed by the ¹H and ¹³C NMR, IR, and UV spectra.     

NMR excitation by an electric field as a dynamic manifestation of magnetoelectric and antiferroelectric interactions

The possibility of excitation of NMR signals by an ac electric field in magnetically ordered crystals is discussed. Such signals can be recorded using the time-dependent component of the electric polarization vector. It is assumed that the electric and magnetic characteristics are coupled to each other through magnetoelectric and antiferroelectric interactions. Several types of magnetic structures are analyzed in which these interactions are not forbidden by symmetry. Such structures include two-sublattice single-position ferro-and antiferromagnetic phases in centrosymmetrical crystals, two-sublattice magnetic crystals without a center of symmetry (such as KNiPO₄), and four-sublattice antiferromagnetic crystals with three types of antiferromagnetism vectors (such as Cr₂O₃ and α-Fe₂O₃).
