Measurements of the cross section for e(+)e(-) --> hadrons at center-of-mass energies from 2 to 5 GeV

We report values of R = sigma(e(+)e(-)-->hadrons)/sigma(e(+)e(-)-->mu(+)mu(-)) for 85 center-of-mass energies between 2 and 5 GeV measured with the upgraded Beijing Spectrometer at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider.     

240-fs pulses with 22-W average power from a mode-locked thin-disk Yb:KY(WO(4))(2) laser

We demonstrate what is to our knowledge the first passively mode-locked thin-disk Yb:KY(WO(4))(2) laser. The laser produces pulses of 240-fs duration with an average power of 22 W at a center wavelength of 1028 nm. At a pulse repetition rate of 25 MHz, the pulse energy is 0.9microJ , and the peak power is as high as 3.3 MW. The beam quality is very close to the diffraction limit, with M(2)=1.1 .     

Digital light-directed synthesis. A microarray platform that permits rapid reaction optimization on a combinatorial basis

Solution reactions using photogenerated reagents (Gao, X.; Yu, P.; LeProust, E.; Sonigo, L.; Pellois, J. P.; Zhang, H. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1998, 120, 12698) are a potentially powerful means for combinatorial parallel synthesis of addressable molecular microarrays. In this report, we demonstrate that this chemistry permits combinatorial screening of reaction conditions on a microarray platform. Using this method of optimization and our reaction apparatus, efficient photogenerated acids and reaction conditions suitable for removal of the acid labile protection group on 5'-O of nucleotides are identified in a short period of time. The chemistry platform demonstrated opens new avenues for rapid, simultaneous investigation of multiple reactions using different reagents and reaction parameters directly on a solid support (e.g., a glass plate). The combinatorial screening method described may be extended to include general organic reactions employing photogenerated and conventional reagents as well as a microarray reaction device. This should be especially valuable for efficient synthesis of addressable organic compound libraries.     

Effect of microstructure on the coercivity of HDDR Nd-Fe-B permanent magnetic alloy

The effect of the grain boundary microstructure on the anisotropy and coercivity was investigated in an HDDR Nd-Fe-B permanent magnetic alloy. Considering the special microstructure of its magnetic powder grain, an anisotropic theoretical model influenced simultaneously by the structure defect at the grain boundary and the exchange coupling interaction was put forward. The variations of the structure defect factors based on the nucleation and pinning mechanism with 2r ₀/lex (where r ₀ and lex are the defect thickness and the length of exchange coupling, respectively) were calculated. The results show that the coercivity mechanism of an HDDR Nd-Fe-B permanent magnetic alloy is greatly related to its microstructure defect at the grain boundary. For a fixed lex, when 2r ₀/lex < 1.67, the coercivity is controlled by the pinning mechanism; when 2r ₀/lex > 1.67, it is determined by the nucleation mechanism. The coercivity reaches the maximum when 2r ₀/lex = 1.67. The calculation result is consistent well with the experimental result given by Morimoto et al. General radiation via tunneling in Kerr and Kerr-Newman black holes

Hawking radiation can be viewed as a process of quantum tunneling near the black hole horizon. When a particle with angular momentum L ≠ ωa tunnels across the event horizon of Kerr or Kerr-Newman black hole, the angular momentum per unit mass a should be changed. The emission rate of the massless particles under this general case is calculated, and the result is consistent with an underlying unitary theory. Elements of provable high orders in finite fields

A method is given for constructing elements in whose orders are larger than any polynomial in when becomes large. As a by-product a theorem on multiplicative independence of compositions of polynomials is proved.

     

C-wellposedness of the complete second order abstract cauchy problem and applications

In this paper, we first give a sufficient and necessary condition for to generate an exponentially bounded -semigroup and discuss its relations to the C-wellposedness of the complete second order abstract Cauchy problem ((ACP₂) for short) in some sense. Then we use these results and those in [1] to discuss the C-(exponential) wellposedness of a kind of (ACP₂) with application backgrounds, and develop the results in [2].
