Characterization of magnetic nano-fluids via Mössbauer spectroscopy

The laser pyrolysis became a useful tool, providing various ways, in production of nano materials. The iron Mössbauer spectroscopy is one very accurate method in evidencing the physical properties and related processes in the nano scale compounds. The effect of pressure, laser spot area and induced combustion, of gas mixture and laser power on the phase composition and inside particle distribution, grain size as well as the related phenomena were investigated by temperature dependent Mössbauer spectroscopy. A selection of most relevant properties is presented and discussed in details.

The Effect of Sodium Total Substitution on the Quality Characteristics of Green Pickled Tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.)

Green pickled tomatoes are a traditional fermented product in Romania. This study was focused on the effect of total substitution of NaCl with KCl and MgCl₂ on physicochemical and microbiological quality; bioactive compounds; and microstructural, textural, and sensorial properties of fresh and pickled green tomatoes during 28 days of fermentation. By the means of physicochemical composition, the NaCl addition induced the most stable characteristics for the pickles compared to the other two types of salts. The content of total flavonoids in green pickled tomatoes with NaCl (34.72 ± 0.43 mg CE/g DW) was significantly lower compared with the control sample (63.80 ± 0.55 mg CE/g DW). The total number of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) at the final stage of fermentation varied between 4.11 and 4.63 log CFU for all variants. The textural analysis revealed that the NaCl has the lowest influence on the textural parameters. Finally, the overall acceptance of green pickled tomatoes containing KCl and MgCl₂ was found to be proper to be consumed as a substitute for pickles with NaCl.     

Nature of the first exothermic peak on the DSC curve of linear polydicyclopentadiene obtained with a special catalytic system

A DSC and TGA study of linear polydicyclopentadiene (L-PDCPD) shows that the thermal behaviour of this polymer is characterized by an endothermic and two exothermic processes. In previous work it was demonstrated that the endothermic process is a glass transition and the second exotherm represents the thermo-oxidation of the polymer. In this work the first exothermic process is shown to be a possible thermal polymerization of the double bonds in the polymer chains.     

The Surface Wettability and Adhesion of Poly(Ester Urethane)s and Poly(Ether Urethane)s

In this study the wetting characteristics of untreated and plasma-treated polyurethane thin films were investigated. The degree of wettability was investigated by measuring the contact angle formed between a liquid drop and the solid surface. The work of adhesion, interfacial free energy, spreading coefficient, and Girifalco–Good's interaction parameter changed significantly for plasma-treated polyurethane films. Both complete and partial wetting were analyzed from the spreading coefficient of liquid drops on the solid substrate.

Harmonic Almost Complex Structures with Respect to General Natural Metrics

We continue here the study initiated in [9] on the harmonicity of certain geometric objects on the total space TM of the tangent bundle of a Riemannian space form (M(c), g). Precisely, in this paper we find all the general natural metrics on TM, with respect to which the canonical almost complex structure J on TM is harmonic. We also study the harmonicity of this tensor field with respect to the natural diagonal metrics. In particular, we obtain that J is harmonic with respect to the Sasaki metric on TM if and only if the base manifold is flat.     

Exosome Proteomics Reveals the Deregulation of Coagulation,Complement and Lipid Metabolism Proteins in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Exosomes are small extracellular vesicles with a variable protein cargo in consonance with cell origin and pathophysiological conditions. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is characterized by different levels of chronic low-grade inflammation and vascular dysfunction; however, there are few data characterizing the serum exosomal protein cargo of GDM patients and associated signaling pathways. Eighteen pregnant women were enrolled in the study: 8 controls (CG) and 10 patients with GDM. Blood samples were collected from patients, for exosomes’ concentration. Protein abundance alterations were demonstrated by relative mass spectrometric analysis and their association with clinical parameters in GDM patients was performed using Pearson’s correlation analysis. The proteomics analysis revealed 78 significantly altered proteins when comparing GDM to CG, related to complement and coagulation cascades, platelet activation, prothrombotic factors and cholesterol metabolism. Down-regulation of Complement C3 (C3), Complement C5 (C5), C4-B (C4B), C4b-binding protein beta chain (C4BPB) and C4b-binding protein alpha chain (C4BPA), and up-regulation of C7, C9 and F12 were found in GDM. Our data indicated significant correlations between factors involved in the pathogenesis of GDM and clinical parameters that may improve the understanding of GDM pathophysiology.
