Kinetics and Mechanism of a Reaction of Phenylacetylene with Carbon Monoxide and Butanol in Toluene Catalyzed by a Palladium(0) Complex in the Presence of Trifluoroacetic Acid and Triphenylphosphine

The reaction of phenylacetylene with CO and n-butanol in toluene (363 K) catalyzed by the Pd(dba)₂/m(CF₃COOH)/n(Ph₃P) system (dba is dibenzylideneacetone; 2 m 8; 10 n 30) is studied. The initial rate of the main product (butyl 2-phenylpropenoate) buildup is found to depend on the pressure of CO and the concentrations of reactants and system components. The state of the catalyst under reaction conditions is studied in situby IR spectroscopy. A kinetic model is developed based on the experimental results. This model corresponds to the mechanism that resembles the hydride mechanism in the type of main intermediates in the catalytic cycle.     

Catalytic properties of polyvanadomolybdic acids in oxidation of 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene by peracetic acid

Polyvanadomolybdic acids catalyze the process of peracid oxidation of 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene. The selectivity with respect to 2,3,5-trimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone increases with increasing degree of replacement of vanadium atoms in the PVMA by molybdenum; this is related to increased stability of the intermediate peroxides of the heteropolyvanadates.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Seriya Khimicheskaya, No. 9, pp. 1967–1969, September, 1989.     

CdSe and CdSe/CdS nanorod solids

We demonstrate the self-organization of CdSe nanorods into nematic, smectic, and crystalline solids. Layered colloidal crystals of CdSe nanorods grow by slow destabilization of a nanocrystal solution upon allowing the diffusion of a nonsolvent into the colloidal solution of nanocrystals. The colloidal crystals of nanorods show characteristic birefringence, which we assign to specific spherulite-like texture of each nanorod assembly. To demonstrate the general character of nanorod self-assembly technique, CdSe/CdS heterostructure nanorods were organized into highly luminescent superlattices.     

Macro-N-heterocyclic compounds: X-ray photoelectron spectra and structure

Bi-, tri-, and tetradentate macroheterocylic ligands, i.e., structural analogs of phthalocyanine, are studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The X-ray photoelectron spectra of N1s lines of the nitrogen atoms of these compounds are analyzed. The binding energies and integrated intensities of N1s lines of the nitrogen atoms are determined and the effective charges on the nitrogen atoms are calculated. The structures of bi-, tri-and tetradentate macroheterocyclic ligands containing isoindole, benzene, and pyridine fragments are established on the basis of the data obtained.     

Polynuclear nonfused bis(1,3,4-oxadiazole)-containing systems

Nonfused bis-1,3,4-oxadiazoles were synthesized by reaction of 5-substituted mono-and bis-tetrazoles with mono-and dicarboxylic acid chlorides. The results of kinetic studies showed that the transformation of tetrazoles into 1,3,4-oxadiazoles is accelerated by 1 to 2 orders of magnitude on addition of a catalytic amount of dimethylformamide, triethylamine, or pyridine.     

Impact of reaction products on the Grignard reaction with silanes and ketones

Grignard reactions with alkoxysilanes or carbonyl compounds produce alkoxymagnesium halides as by-products. Kinetic measurements for reactions of silanes and of a ketone were performed with Grignard reagents, enriched in alkoxymagnesium halides and taken in a great excess.The alkoxide-type reaction products complex tightly with Grignard reagents and enhance in this way their nucleophilicity, thus accelerating the reaction. However, alkoxides branched at α-C atom exert an unfavorable steric hindrance to reaction resulting in a decrease in the reaction rate.     

Insulating tubular BN sheathing on semiconducting nanowires

An effective method was developed for generation of insulating tubular boron nitride (BN)-sheathed nanostructures. ZnS nanowires and multilayered Si-SiO2 nanowires were successfully sheathed with insulating tubular BN-forming nanocables. Both the semiconductor nanowire cores and the BN sheaths are crystalline with well-uniform morphologies.     

Nitroazines 24. stable anionic σ-adducts of condensed nitrotriazines
