A motility mechanism based on a simple exclusion process, where the movement of discrete agents on a lattice is either unbiased (symmetric) or biased (asymmetric) is considered. Estimates of diffusivities from tracking data do not describe the population-level response of the system. This mismatch between the individual-level and population-level behaviour can be resolved by averaging the individual-level mechanism in terms of an expected site occupancy. New insight into simple exclusion processes is obtained by representing the system as a series of interacting subpopulations. This formalism leads to a system of nonlinear advection-diffusion equations which can be interpreted in terms of the agent fluxes. These interactions have consequences for both agent-based modelling and continuum modelling in cell biology, such as tracking subpopulations of cells within a total cell population. 相似文献

Purpose
The long-term goal of our research is to develop a patient-specific biomechanical model of the supraspinatus muscle and tendon for analyzing the effects of fatty infiltration and pennation angle changes. One input of the model will be the amount and distribution of fat within the muscle. Therefore, the objective of this project was to adapt and validate a novel magnetic resonance imaging pulse sequence for quantifying the extent of fatty infiltration for the supraspinatus muscle.Methods
Samples of incremental combinations of muscle and fat from a cow were prepared and scanned with our quantitative MR technique. The MR results were compared to actual fat measurements taken using a Soxtec extraction analyzer.Results
The MR fat quantification results closely match those values determined by Soxtec analysis (R2=.98, root mean square deviation=4.9).Conclusions
Our MR fat quantification protocol can be used to accurately quantify fatty infiltration in skeletal muscle. This ability to evaluate skeletal muscle tissue noninvasively will improve the efficacy of evaluation of fatty degeneration in assessing tissue quality preoperatively. The interaction of monolayer coverages of pentacene with the √3 × √3 silver terminated Si(1 1 1) surface has been studies by high resolution core level and valence band photoemission spectroscopies. Core level Si 2p spectra reveal that there is only a very weak interaction between the pentacene and the underlying silicon, however, there is evidence of Fermi level movement. Valence band spectra acquired with both s and p polarised light indicate that for the surface coverages investigated, the molecular layers are oriented parallel to the plane of the surface. These results are in agreement with recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies which indicated that the pentacene molecules form highly ordered layers with the plane of the molecule parallel to the surface. Changes in the workfunction and Fermi level movements have been used to determine the energy level alignment at the interface. A 0.35 eV interface dipole forms between the pentacene and the silver terminated Si(1 1 1) surface within a two monolayer deposition. Photoemission measurements of the energy level alignment at the interface reveal that there is almost no barrier to charge injection from the conduction band of the semiconductor to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the pentacene molecule. 相似文献

This study examined vowel perception by young normal-hearing (YNH) adults, in various listening conditions designed to simulate mild-to-moderate sloping sensorineural hearing loss. YNH listeners were individually age- and gender-matched to young hearing-impaired (YHI) listeners tested in a previous study [Richie et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 114, 2923-2933 (2003)]. YNH listeners were tested in three conditions designed to create equal audibility with the YHI listeners; a low signal level with and without a simulated hearing loss, and a high signal level with a simulated hearing loss. Listeners discriminated changes in synthetic vowel tokens /I e epsilon alpha ae/ when Fl or F2 varied in frequency. Comparison of YNH with YHI results failed to reveal significant differences between groups in terms of performance on vowel discrimination, in conditions of similar audibility by using both noise masking to elevate the hearing thresholds of the YNH and applying frequency-specific gain to the YHI listeners. Further, analysis of learning curves suggests that while the YHI listeners completed an average of 46% more test blocks than YNH listeners, the YHI achieved a level of discrimination similar to that of the YNH within the same number of blocks. Apparently, when age and gender are closely matched between young hearing-impaired and normal-hearing adults, performance on vowel tasks may be explained by audibility alone. 相似文献

Sequential processing of aluminum and copper followed by reactive diffusion annealing is used as a paradigm for the metalorganic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) of coatings containing intermetallic alloys. Dimethylethylamine alane and copper N,N′-di-isopropylacetamidinate are used as aluminum and copper precursors, respectively. Deposition is performed on steel and silica substrates at 1.33 kPa and 493–513 K. Different overall compositions in the entire range of the Al–Cu phase diagram are obtained by varying the relative thickness of the two elemental layers while maintaining the overall thickness of the coating close to 1 μm. As-deposited films present a rough morphology attributed to the difficulty of copper to nucleate on aluminum. Post-deposition annealing is monitored by in situ X-ray diffraction, and allows smoothening the microstructure and identifying conditions leading to several Al–Cu phases. Our results establish a proof of principle following which MOCVD of metallic alloys is feasible, and are expected to extend the materials pool for numerous applications, with innovative thin film processing on, and surface properties of complex in shape parts. 相似文献

We retrospectively reviewed the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of giant hemangiomas in 24 patients. MRI studies comprised T1-weighted, T2-weighted and serial gadolinium-enhanced spoiled gradient echo (SGE) images. Morphologic features, signal characteristics and enhancement patterns were assessed. Histopathologic evaluation was obtained in nine patients. On T2-weighted images all lesions (size 5.7-24 cm) were hyperintense relative to the spleen and two dominant patterns of heterogeneity were demonstrated: a central heterogeneous area of either bright, dark, or mixed signal intensity, and a network of multiple fibrous septa of low signal intensity. Histopathologic evaluation of two lesions with a central bright area demonstrated the presence of hypocellular myxoid tissue. Central enhancement (9 lesions) and an irregular flame-shaped peripheral pattern of enhancement (12 lesions) were present in lesions with a mean diameter greater than 10 cm. Although giant hemangiomas show greater variability in their MR imaging appearance, an accurate diagnosis can be made through still characteristic features of high signal intensity on T2-weighted images and discontinuous peripheral enhancement. 相似文献

For the first time, measurements of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) alone favor cosmologies with w = -1 dark energy over models without dark energy at a 3.2-sigma level. We demonstrate this by combining the CMB lensing deflection power spectrum from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope with temperature and polarization power spectra from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe. The lensing data break the geometric degeneracy of different cosmological models with similar CMB temperature power spectra. Our CMB-only measurement of the dark energy density Ω(Λ) confirms other measurements from supernovae, galaxy clusters, and baryon acoustic oscillations, and demonstrates the power of CMB lensing as a new cosmological tool. 相似文献

We predict the existence of a three-dimensional quantum Hall effect plateau in a graphite crystal subject to a magnetic field. The plateau has a Hall conductivity quantized at 4e2/variant Planck's over 2pi 1/c0 with c0 the c-axis lattice constant. We analyze the three-dimensional Hofstadter problem of a realistic tight-binding Hamiltonian for graphite, find the gaps in the spectrum, and estimate the critical value of the magnetic field above which the Hall plateau appears. When the Fermi level is in the bulk Landau gap, Hall transport occurs through the appearance of chiral surface states. We estimate the magnetic field necessary for the appearance of the effect to be 15.4 T for electron carriers and 7.0 T for holes. 相似文献
