Use of a mobile phone for potentiostatic control with low cost paper-based microfluidic sensors

By exploiting its ability to play sounds, a mobile phone with suitable software installed can serve the basic functions of a potentiostat in controlling an applied potential to oxidise ECL-active molecules, while the resultant photonic signal is monitored using the camera in video mode. In combination with paper microfluidic sensors this opens significant new possibilities for low-cost, instrument-free sensing.     

On the facile dehydrohalogenation of amino acid derived chloromethyl ketones.

Amino acid derived chloromethyl ketones are shown to undergo a general dehydrohalogenation reaction under mild, basic, nonnucleophilic conditions to afford α-β-unsaturated ketones.     

Deaminatively generated carbocations as initiators of styrene polymerization

[reaction: see text] Addition polymerization is readily accomplished via free radicals and carbanions but conventional initiations via carbocations are limited principally by low initiator reactivity. Thermolyses of N-nitrosamides produce nitrogen-separated ion-pairs (NSIPs) containing exceedingly reactive carbocations. We report here the novel use of this facile mode of carbocation generation in the polymerization of styrene. Polystyrene of viscosity average molecular weight approximately 10(6) was obtained.     

A [4 + 2] cycloaddition strategy to pyridine boronic ester derivatives

Alkynylboronate cycloadditions of 1,4-oxazin-2-ones and 2-pyrazinones provide a direct and regioselective route to functionalized pyridine boronic ester derivatives.     

A simple model for a two-stage chemical reaction with diffusion

We analyse the evolution of a two-stage chemical reaction betweentwo neighbouring plumes of reactants. Under the assumption thatthe plumes are approximately Gaussian we derive a system ofordinary differential equations for the total amount, the centroidand the variance of each reactant. We compare the solution ofthese equations with full numerical simulation of the reaction.Excellent agreement is obtained, with solution of the near-Gaussianmodel requiring considerably less computational effort thanthe full simulations. Of key importance is the yield of thereaction, and we discuss this feature in particular.     

Spatiotemporal Control of CRISPR/Cas9 Function in Cells and Zebrafish using Light-Activated Guide RNA

We developed a new method for the conditional regulation of CRISPR/Cas9 activity in mammalian cells and zebrafish embryos using photochemically activated, caged guide RNAs (gRNAs). Caged gRNAs are generated by substituting four nucleobases evenly distributed throughout the 5′-protospacer region with caged nucleobases during synthesis. Caging confers complete suppression of gRNA:dsDNA-target hybridization and rapid restoration of CRISPR/Cas9 function upon optical activation. This tool offers simplicity and complete programmability in design, high spatiotemporal specificity in cells and zebrafish embryos, excellent off-to-on switching, and stability by preserving the ability to form Cas9:gRNA ribonucleoprotein complexes. Caged gRNAs are novel tools for the conditional control of gene editing, thereby enabling the investigation of spatiotemporally complex physiological events by obtaining a better understanding of dynamic gene regulation.     

Symmetry, delocalization, and molecular conductance

Molecules bonded between two metal contacts form the simplest possible molecular devices. Coupled by the molecule, the left and right contact-based states form symmetric and antisymmetric pairs near the Fermi level. We relate the size of the resulting energy splitting DeltaE to the symmetry and degree of delocalization of the coupling molecular orbital. Qualitative trends in molecular conductances are then estimated from the variations in DeltaE. We examine benzenedithiol and other molecules of interest in transport.
