Mass spectral structure elucidation of substituted 4-oxazolidones,the photocycloexpansion products of 2,4-azetidindiones

Abstract-2-Methoxy-4-oxazolidone structures are assigned to the photocycloexpansion products of the substituted 2,4-azetidindiones on the basis of mass spectral evidence. A discussion is given of the mass spectra of 2-methoxy-4-oxazolidones and of their hydrolysis products, the 2-hydroxy-4-oxazolidones and the ring opened substituted 2-hydroxy-N-formyl acetamides. Ring and chain forms, when both isolated, yield completely different mass spectra, indicating that no rapid tautomeric equilibrium is established in the gas phase.     

Mixed proton complexes of aminoacids and carboxylic ligands in aqueous solution

Formation and stability of proton-mixed ligand complexes have been studied for the systems H(+)-lysine-aspartic acid, H(+)-lysine-succinic acid and H(+)-glycine malonic acid, in aqueous solution at 25 degrees , by potentiometric technique using the (H(+))-glass electrode. For all these systems it has been found that the species ABH(j) (A and B, first and second ligand, respectively; j = 1, 2, ... m + n - 1; m and n are the maximum protonation degrees of the two ligands, respectively) are formed. The stability of these species is discussed with respect to various factors and, in particular, as a function of speciation problems.     

Excess enthalpies of solution of some primary and secondary alcohols in sodium dodecylsulfate micellar solutions

The exces enthalpies of solution of some primary and secondary alcohols in aqueous sodium dodecylsulfate micellar solutions were measured and the results were explained by considering the distribution of alcohols between aqueous and micellar phases. The distribution constant and the enthalpy of transfer (and the standard free energy and entropy of transfer) were obtained. The thermodynamic parameters for the transfer of secondary alcohols from the aqueous to the sodium dodecylsulfate (NaDS) micellar phase differ slightly from those of the corresponding primary alcohols. For both series of alcohols the additivity rule holds for free energies of transfer whereas enthalpies and entropies display convex curves. The present data are compared to those for the transfer of the same solutes from the aqueous to the dodecyldimethylamine oxide (DDAO) and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) micellar phases. The role of the hydrophilic interactions between the OH group and the micelles' head groups is formulated. The thermodynamics of the branched methyl group were determined. Furthermore, the thermodynamics of solvation of primary alcohols in water, in NaDS micelles, and in octane have been calculated using reference states based on the assumption that the empty space around alcohols in the initial and final states is the same. It is shown that the solvation of alcohols in NaDS micellar phase is enthalpy driven and that the thermodynamic properties of solvation vs. the length of the alcohol tail is the same for water and NaDS micelles whereas it is different for octane. A possible explanation for this difference is that the alkyl chain of alcohols folds in octane.     

Isoprene functionalization : E/Z-isomerism of 1-sulfonyl substituted 2-methylbutadienes

The isomeric chlorosulfones 3, 4 and 5 are prepared by 1,4-addition of sulfonyl chlorides to isoprene, Dehydrohalogenation affords the corresponding 2- and 3-methylbutadienyl sulfones in a configuration which is dependent on the configuration of the chlorosulfone. Pure Z-2-methylbutadienyl sulfones 1 are obtained by displacement of primary halides by the Z-sulfinate anion 2. The Z-sulfones 1 are isomerized to E/Z-mixtures. The E/Z-mixtures are separated into their components and the configuration of the isomers is established by the NMR-NOE technique.     

Rearrangement of 4-(1-haloalkyl)- and 4-(2-haloalkyl)-2-azetidinones into methyl omega-alkylaminopentenoates via transient aziridines and azetidines

The synthesis of 4-(1-haloalkyl)-2-azetidinones and 4-(2-haloalkyl)-2-azetidinones was investigated with use of the Staudinger reaction between in situ generated ketenes and alpha-haloimines or beta-haloimines. This new class of functionalized 2-azetidinones was further evaluated for its potential use as intermediates in the synthesis of highly functionalized compounds. The reaction of 4-(1-haloalkyl)-2-azetidinones and 4-(2-haloalkyl)-2-azetidinones with sodium methoxide in methanol yielded ring-opened products, i.e., methyl 2-alkoxy-4-(alkylamino)pentenoate and methyl 5-(alkylamino)pentenoate, respectively. Further attention was paid in detail to the reaction mechanism involved in this peculiar transformation. It was proven that these reactions proceeded via intermediate aziridines or azetidines.     

Two new compounds derived from bufalin

The biotransformation of bufalin by cell suspension cultures of Platycodon grandiflorus was investigated and two new biotransformed products were obtained,which was 3-epi-telocinobufagin and 3-epi-bufalin-3-O-β-D-glucoside.     

Synthesis and characterization of 4-hydroxy-3-phenylprolines

4-Hydroxy-3-phenylprolines were synthesized via 1-acetyl-2,2-diethoxycarbonyl-2,3-dihydro-3-phenyl-1H-pyrrole. Reversed phase hplc resulted in the isolation of the products which were characterized by ¹H and ¹³C nmr spectroscopy.     

The Crystal Structure of Pb8FeIIFeF24: an ordered Fluorite-like Compound

Pb₈Fe^IIFeF₂₄ is triclinic: a = 20.118(3) Å, b = 5.597(1) Å, c = 9.440(2) Å, α = 89.75(2)°, β = 105.79(2)°, α = 89.38(2)°, Z = 2. The structure is solved in the unconventional space group C1 , from X-ray single crystal data using 1 641 independent reflections (R = 0.048, R_w = 0.051). It is built up from the stacking of two subnetworks along the a axis: fluorite-like [Pb₈F₁₀]_n⁶ⁿ⁺ layers and infinite dimetallic [Fe^IIFeF₁₄]_n^6n? double-chains of corner-sharing octahedra running along the b axis.
