In this paper we propose a scheme for choosing basis functions for quantum dynamics calculations. Direct product bases are frequently used. The number of direct product functions required to converge a spectrum, compute a rate constant, etc., is so large that direct product calculations are impossible for molecules or reacting systems with more than four atoms. It is common to extract a smaller working basis from a huge direct product basis by removing some of the product functions. We advocate a build and prune strategy of this type. The one-dimensional (1D) functions from which we build the direct product basis are chosen to satisfy two conditions: (1) they nearly diagonalize the full Hamiltonian matrix; (2) they minimize off-diagonal matrix elements that couple basis functions with diagonal elements close to those of the energy levels we wish to compute. By imposing these conditions we increase the number of product functions that can be removed from the multidimensional basis without degrading the accuracy of computed energy levels. Two basic types of 1D basis functions are in common use: eigenfunctions of 1D Hamiltonians and discrete variable representation (DVR) functions. Both have advantages and disadvantages. The 1D functions we propose are intermediate between the 1D eigenfunction functions and the DVR functions. If the coupling is very weak, they are very nearly 1D eigenfunction functions. As the strength of the coupling is increased they resemble more closely DVR functions. We assess the usefulness of our basis by applying it to model 6D, 8D, and 16D Hamiltonians with various coupling strengths. We find approximately linear scaling. 相似文献

The effects exhibited by adsorbed conducting polyaniline on the redox process on a molybdenum oxide surface were studied. Thermogravimetric results indicate a 4% polyaniline deposition. Cyclic voltammograms of the adsorbed polymer on MoO3 show that polyaniline exerts remarkable effects on the molybdenum blue oxidation-reduction process, with oxidation and reduction potentials of 0.33 and 0.18 V, respectively. This effect strongly enhances the electrode response, and can be used as an important tool in qualitative and/or quantitative determinations of molybdenum in solution as well as in any substrate. Nanowires are formed by indenting and subsequently retracting two pieces of sodium metal. Their cross section gradually reduces upon retraction and the diameters can be obtained from the conductance. In previous work we have demonstrated that when one constructs a histogram of diameters from large numbers of indentation-retraction cycles such histograms show a periodic pattern of stable nanowire diameters due to shell structure in the conductance modes. Here, we report the observation of a modulation of this periodic pattern, in agreement with predictions of a supershell structure. 相似文献

Direct product basis functions are frequently used in quantum dynamics calculations, but they are poor in the sense that many such functions are required to converge a spectrum, compute a rate constant, etc. Much better, contracted, basis functions, that account for coupling between coordinates, can be obtained by diagonalizing reduced dimension Hamiltonians. If a direct product basis is used, it is advantageous to use discrete variable representation (DVR) basis functions because matrix representations of functions of coordinates are diagonal in the DVR. By diagonalizing matrices representing coordinates it is straightforward to obtain the DVR that corresponds to any direct product basis. Because contracted basis functions are eigenfunctions of reduced dimension Hamiltonians that include coupling terms they are not direct product functions. The advantages of contracted basis functions and the advantages of the DVR therefore appear to be mutually exclusive. A DVR that corresponds to contracted functions is unknown. In this paper we propose such a DVR. It spans the same space as a contracted basis, but in it matrix representations of coordinates are diagonal. The DVR basis functions are chosen to achieve maximal diagonality of coordinate matrices. We assess the accuracy of this DVR by applying it to model four-dimensional problems. 相似文献

The spectrum of nitrous oxide dimer was investigated by constructing new potential energy surfaces using coupled-cluster theory and solving the rovibrational Schro?dinger equation with a Lanczos algorithm. Two four-dimensional (rigid monomer) global ab initio potential energy surfaces (PESs) were made using an interpolating moving least-squares (IMLS) fitting procedure specialized to describe the interaction of two linear fragments. The first exploratory fit was made from 1646 CCSD(T)/3ZaP energies. Isomeric minima and connecting transition structures were located on the fitted surface, and the energies of those geometries were benchmarked using complete basis set (CBS) extrapolations, counterpoise (CP) corrections, and explicitly correlated (F12b) methods. At the geometries tested, the explicitly correlated F12b method produced energies in close agreement with the estimated CBS limit. A second fit to 1757 data at the CCSD(T)-F12b/VTZ-F12 level was constructed with an estimated fitting error of less than 1.5?cm(-1). The second surface has a global nonpolar O-in minimum, two T-shaped N-in minima, and two polar minima. Barriers between these minima are small and some wave functions have amplitudes in several wells. Low-lying rovibrational wave functions and energy levels up to about 150?cm(-1) were computed on the F12b PES using a discrete variable representation/finite basis representation method. Titration microcalorimetry is used to study the influences of iodide, bromide, and chloride counterions on the aggregation of vesicle-forming 1-methyl-4-(2-pentylheptyl)pyridinium halide surfactants. Formation of vesicles by these surfactants was characterised using transmission electron microscopy. When the counterion is changed at 303 K through the series iodide, bromide, to chloride, the critical vesicular concentration (cvc) increases and the enthalpy of vesicle formation changes from exo- to endothermic. With increase in temperature to 333 K, vesicle formation becomes strongly exothermic. Increasing the temperature leads to a decrease in enthalpy and entropy of vesicle formation for all three surfactants. However the standard Gibbs energy for vesicle formation is, perhaps surprisingly, largely unaffected by an increase in temperature, as a consequence of a compensating change in both standard entropy and standard enthalpy of vesicle formation. Interestingly, standard isobaric heat capacities of vesicle formation are negative, large in magnitude but not strikingly dependent on the counterion. We conclude that the driving force for vesicle formation can be understood in terms of overlap of the thermally labile hydrophobic hydration shells of the alkyl chains.
