PROBING THE STRUCTURE OF HPD BY FLUORESCENCE SPECTROSCOPY

Fluorescence emission spectra indicate that oligomers containing both hematoporphyrin and its dehydration products (vinyl porphyrins) comprise the tumor-localizing fraction of HPD. In the relatively polar solvent methanol, the vinyl porphyrins exhibit reduced fluorescence yields while the hematoporphyrin residues are relatively resistant to fluorescence quenching by Fe+3. In the less polar solvent tetrahydrofuran, fluorescence from oligomeric vinyl porphyrins was enhanced, and Fe+3-induced quenching of oligomeric hematoporphyrin promoted. These, together with other studies in biological systems, suggest a substantial degree of interaction among the porphyrin units contained in these oligomers, as a function of the polarity of the environment.     

On the mechanism of the decarboxylative rearrangement of thiohydroxamic esters

The thermal and photochemical decomposition of a typical thiohydroxamic ester (mixed anhydride) doubly labelled with deuterium has shown the photochemical reaction to be a radical chain process, whereas about 20% of the thermal reaction involves a cage mechanism. An improved route to 1-hydroxy-5-phenylthiazolin- -2-thione is reported.

Zusammenfassung Es wird eine allgemeine Beziehung zwischen dem dichroitischen Verhältnis, dem Ausmaß der Orientierung und dem Winkel zwischen der Richtung des Übergangsmomentes und der Molekül-Längsachse abgeleitet. Mit dieser Beziehung ist es prinzipiell möglich, auch bei nicht vollständiger Orientierung der Moleküle eine genaue Bestimmung der Richtung von Übergangsmomenten vorzunehmen.

Determination of the direction of transition moments on oblong molecules by measurement of infrared dichroism, I

A general relation between dichroic ratio, degree of orientation and the angle between direction of transition moment and longitudinal axis of the molecule is derived. By this relation it will be possible in prineiple to determine exactly the direction of transition moments even when the molecules of the sample are only partially oriented.

Biphenyl- and fluorenyl-based potential molecular electronic devices

New potential molecular electronics devices have been synthesized based on our knowledge of systems that we previously studied. Research has shown that simple molecular systems demonstrate negative differential resistance (NDR) and memory characteristics. The new molecules rely primarily on the redox properties of the compounds to improve upon the solid-state characteristics already observed. Electrochemical tests have been performed in order to evaluate the redox properties with the hope that the electrochemical results can be used as a predictive tool to evaluate the usefulness of those compounds in device configurations.     

Dimethyldihydropyrene-dehydrobenzoannulene hybrids: studies in aromaticity and photoisomerization

The synthesis and study of dehydrobenzoannulene (DBA)-dimethyldihydropyrene (DDP) hybrids as models for the investigation of aromaticity in weakly diatropic systems is reported. Three new monofused DBA-DDP hybrids have been synthesized, and their NMR spectra are discussed with regard to quantifying the aromaticity remaining in multibenzene-fused DBAs. Nucleus-independent chemical shifts, determined at a series of locations for each compound, bond lengths, and (1)H and (13)C NMR chemical shifts were calculated and used to probe the aromaticity of these hybrids. Systems where more than one annulene/DBA is fused to the DDP core have also been obtained, and their potential use in photoinduced isomerization applications is discussed.     

The Incorporation of Titania into Modified Silicates for Solar Photodegradation of Aqueous Species

A new class of sol-gel-derived photocatalytic materials has been synthesized and used in solar-assisted photodegradation studies. The materials are comprised of a homogeneous dispersion of commercial TiO₂ powder into silica and organically modified silicate (Ormosil) hosts. The efficiency of the photocatalytic properties of these TiO₂-containing materials was determined by their relative performance in the solar photodecomposition of aqueous rhodamine B. The improved adsorption properties of the modified materials compared to commercial TiO₂ increase the photodecomposition rate and the buoyancy properties, although excess hydrophobicity decreases the wetted section of the catalyst and its photocatalytic performance. These materials can be used as floatable catalysts for solar-assisted water purification.     

Performance of SuSi: a method for generating atomistic models of amorphous polymers based on a random search of energy minima

The performance of a recently developed method to generate representative atomistic models of amorphous polymers has been investigated. This method, which is denoted SuSi, can be defined as a random generator of energy minima. The effects produced by different parameters used to define the size of the system and the characteristics of the generation algorithm have been examined. Calculations have been performed on poly(L,D-lactic) acid (rho = 1.25 g/cm3) and nylon 6 (rho = 1.084 g/cm(3)), which are important commercial polymers.     

Fractional revivals in the rovibrational motion of I2

Motivated by pump-probe experiments of I(2) in a room-temperature sample, the detection of fractional revivals is investigated using full-dimensional quantum wave packet calculations. It is shown that the structures observed in the pump-probe signal depend sensitively on the probe parameters employed and that the observed signal reflects a particular phase effect between fractional revivals.     

Form fluctuations of carbosilane dendrimers in dilute solution: a study using neutron spin echo spectroscopy

A series of carbosilane dendrimers with perfluorinated end groups has been prepared. The structure of these molecules in dilute solution is studied using small angle neutron scattering. For generations g<3 we find a non-spherical shape of the particles and a tendency for aggregation. This result is supported by the analysis of the diffusion coefficient obtained from photon correlation spectroscopy. The overall shape of the molecules is that of a core-shell particle. The generation 4 molecule is obtained as a compact sphere. Neutron spin echo spectroscopy reveals a relaxation time which is attributed to the form fluctuations of this particle.
