A behavioral response paradigm was used to measure masked underwater hearing thresholds in a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and a white whale (Delphinapterus leucas) before and after exposure to single underwater impulsive sounds produced from a seismic watergun. Pre- and postexposure thresholds were compared to determine if a temporary shift in masked hearing thresholds (MTTS), defined as a 6-dB or larger increase in postexposure thresholds, occurred. Hearing thresholds were measured at 0.4, 4, and 30 kHz. MTTSs of 7 and 6 dB were observed in the white whale at 0.4 and 30 kHz, respectively, approximately 2 min following exposure to single impulses with peak pressures of 160 kPa, peak-to-peak pressures of 226 dB re 1 microPa, and total energy fluxes of 186 dB re 1 microPa2 x s. Thresholds returned to within 2 dB of the preexposure value approximately 4 min after exposure. No MTTS was observed in the dolphin at the highest exposure conditions: 207 kPa peak pressure, 228 dB re 1 microPa peak-to-peak pressure, and 188 dB re 1 microPa2 x s total energy flux.  相似文献

We report measurements of residual vapour levels of xylenes and trimethylbenzenes, present following a floor re-surfacing procedure, using the technique of selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS). A subject exposed to controlled amounts of xylene and mesitylene was monitored by direct breath exhalation over a 4-hour period after exposure to the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) had stopped. The headspace gases above 5 mL blood samples taken over this period were also monitored. The decays of the solvent levels with time were fitted to a two-compartment model with residence times for xylene and mesitylene of 0.37 h and 0.38 h, respectively (compartment one) and 2.5 h and 2.8 h, respectively (compartment two).  相似文献

We show that perturbative high scale unification and a solution to the hierarchy problem are possible with extra dimensions in the context of the warped geometry of 5D anti-de Sitter space ( AdS(5)). This is possible because the couplings for bulk gauge bosons run logarithmically below the AdS(5) curvature scale. The calculation is done in five dimensions, rather than in the effective theory, which is strongly coupled above the TeV scale.  相似文献

We show that, for , the relation of -equivalence between infinite sequences of real numbers is Borel reducible to the relation of -equivalence (i.e., the Borel cardinality of the quotient is no larger than that of ), but not vice versa. The Borel reduction is constructed using variants of the triadic Koch snowflake curve; the nonreducibility in the other direction is proved by taking a putative Borel reduction, refining it to a reduction map that is not only continuous but `modular,' and using this nicer map to derive a contradiction.

Six recently proposed methods for analyzing copolymerization composition data have been compared to a nonlinear least-squares analysis to ascertain the precision of the six methods in determining reactivity ratios. Data used were simulated for five hypothetical monomer pairs with three different types of experiment design and contained error structures similar to those observed experimentally. The results of the comparisons suggest that retrospective analyses of existing copolymerization data should only be done with a nonlinear least-squares analysis. For new data, the design of experiments is of great importance, and when done properly allows the use of some of the linear least-squares methods of analysis.  相似文献

A copper(II) ion-selective-electrode potentiometric method was used to determine the first and second hydrolysis constants of Cu2+. Special techniques prevented copper(II) hydroxide precipitation, and copper(II) carbonate and cipper(II) organic complexation during the titration of the experimental solution over the pH range 6.8–8.4. The large change in the total copper concentration during the titration due to adsorption of copper onto the vessel walls was accounted for by measuring the total copper concentration at each pH by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The two hydrolysis constants were determined at 25°C in 0.7 and 0.05m NaClO4 media. The measured stability constants are independent of the copper concentration and yield similar zero ionic strength values. Also, the stepwise equilibrium constants decrease as the ligand number increases.  相似文献

Defining a spin connection is necessary for formulating Dirac's bispinor equation in a curved space-time. Hestenes has shown that a bispinor field is equivalent to an orthonormal tetrad of vector fields together with a complex scalar field. In this paper, we show that using Hestenes' tetrad for the spin connection in a Riemannian space-time leads to a Yang-Mills formulation of the Dirac Lagrangian in which the bispinor field Ψ is mapped to a set of SL(2,RU(1) gauge potentials FαK and a complex scalar field ρ. This result was previously proved for a Minkowski space-time using Fierz identities. As an application we derive several different non-Riemannian spin connections found in the literature directly from an arbitrary linear connection acting on the tensor fields (FαK, ρ). We also derive spin connections for which Dirac's bispinor equation is form invariant. Previous work has not considered form invariance of the Dirac equation as a criterion for defining a general spin connection.  相似文献

Femtosecond laser-driven approximately 1 GPa shock waves are used to compress monolayers of hydrocarbon chains. Vibrational sum-frequency generation spectroscopy probes the orientation of the terminal methyl groups. With an odd number (15) of carbon atoms, shock compression is an elastic process that causes the methyl groups to tilt. With an even number (18) of carbon atoms, shock compression is viscoelastic, creating single and double gauche defects. When the shock unloads, single gauche defects remain while double defects relax in 30 ps to single-defect states with more upright methyl groups.  相似文献
