Diffraction of laser-plasma-generated electron pulses

We report the observation of the Debye–Scherrer diffraction using electron pulses emitted from a fs-laser plasma. Titanium sapphire laser pulses with 1.6 mJ/45 fs at 1 kHz are focused on a moving steel tape at close to normal incidence. The laser plasma generated ejects a large number of electrons in the direction of polarization, with a continuous energy spectrum extending up to 100 keV. Selecting an energy range of these electrons and scattering them on a thin aluminium sample generates a “streaked” diffraction pattern with unique features.     

Influence of organic modifier and temperature on the enantiomeric separation of γ-lactams by HPLC

Summary A high-performance liquid chromatographic method is reported for the resolution of the enantiomers of a series of fused -lactams (2,7-diaza-3-oxo[3.3.0]octan-6-ones) with probable anti-HIV and anticancer activity. Resolution was achieved on a Chiralcel^® OD column, cellulose tris-(3,5-dimethylphenyl carbamate) adsorbed on macroporous silica gel; mixtures ofn-hexane and isopropyl alcohol in different proportions were used as the mobile phase. The analysis was studied at different temperatures.     

Hartogs Phenomena and Antisyzygies for Systems of Differential Equations

We introduce the notion of antisyzygies, which studies the inverse problem of finding a system of PDEs, given compatibility conditions. The system obtained possesses the property of removability of compact singularities. We write explicit computations in the cases of the Cauchy-Fueter system and Maxwell’s system for electromagnetism, and we conclude with a study of systems of non-maximal rank.      

Cores of Simplicial Complexes

We introduce a method to reduce the study of the topology of a simplicial complex to that of a simpler one. Applying this method to complexes arising from graphs, we give topological meaning to classical graph invariants. As a consequence, we answer some questions raised in (Ehrenborg and Hetyei in Eur. J. Comb. 27(6):906–923, 2006) on the independence complex and the dominance complex of a forest and obtain improved algorithms to compute their homotopy types.     

Non-quantum liquefaction of coherent gases

We show that a gas-to-liquid phase transition at zero temperature may occur in a coherent gas of bosons in the presence of competing nonlinear effects. This situation can take place in atomic systems like Bose-Einstein condensates in alkali gases with two-body and three-body interactions of opposite signs, as well as in laser beams which propagate through optical media with Kerr (focusing) and higher order (defocusing) nonlinear responses. The liquefaction process takes place in the absence of any quantum effect and can be formulated in the framework of a mean field theory, in terms of the minimization of a thermodynamic potential. We study from a thermodynamic point of view all the stationary solutions of the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation which describes our system. We show that solitonic localized solutions connect the gaseous and liquid phases. Furthermore, we also perform a numerical simulation in the presence of linear gain and three-body recombination where a rich dynamics, including the emergence of self-organization behavior, is found.     

Bergamot (<Emphasis Type="Italic">Citrus bergamia</Emphasis> Risso) fruit extracts and identified components alter expression of interleukin 8 gene in cystic fibrosis bronchial epithelial cell lines

Background  

Cystic fibrosis (CF) airway pathology is a fatal, autosomal, recessive genetic disease characterized by extensive lung inflammation. After induction by TNF-α, elevated concentrations of several pro-inflammatory cytokines (i.e. IL-6, IL-1β) and chemokines (i.e. IL-8) are released from airway epithelial cells. In order to reduce the excessive inflammatory response in the airways of CF patients, new therapies have been developed and in this respect, medicinal plant extracts have been studied. In this article we have investigated the possible use of bergamot extracts (Citrus bergamia Risso) and their identified components to alter the expression of IL-8 associated with the cystic fibrosis airway pathology.     

Photoluminescence-Based Techniques for the Detection of Micro- and Nanoplastics

The growing numbers related to plastic pollution are impressive, with ca. 70 % of produced plastic (>350 tonnes/year) being indiscriminately wasted in the environment. The most dangerous forms of plastic pollution for biota and human health are micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs), which are ubiquitous and more bioavailable. Their elimination is extremely difficult, but the first challenge is their detection since existing protocols are unsatisfactory for microplastics and mostly absent for nanoplastics. After a discussion of the state of the art for MNPs detection, we specifically revise the techniques based on photoluminescence that represent very promising solutions for this problem. In this context, Nile Red staining is the most used strategy and we show here its pros and limitations, but we also discuss other more recent approaches, such as the use of fluorogenic probes based on perylene-bisimide and on fluorogenic hyaluronan nanogels, with the added values of biocompatibility and water solubility.
