pp interactions at 303GeVc: Separation of diffractive and nondiffractive components of the multiplicity distribution

We have studied the properties of the inclusive pp → pX reation at $\text{303}\text{GeV}\text{c}$. Protons of momentum $\text{1.4}\text{GeV}\text{c}$ or less are measured and identified by their ionization. We investigate the multiplicity distribution associated with those events having a small four-momentum transfer to the target proton. Under the assumption that this selection enhances or isolates the diffractive component of the interaction, we discuss the properties of the diffractive and nondiffractive components.     

Waring's problem for the ring of polynomials

We investigate the question of which polynomials are not representable as the sum of “few” powers of polynomials. In particular for Waring's problem over the ring of polynomials we show that there exist polynomials which are not the sum of fewer than $\text{n}{}^{\mathrm{<mtext>1</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}$nth powers of polynomials.     

A numerical method for determining nonlinear normal modes

This paper examines a new approach for determining the nonlinear normal modes of undamped non-gyroscopic multiple degree-of-freedom systems. Unlike algebraic solutions that generally assume a solution in the form of a polynomial expansion, this method makes only the assumption of repetitive motion in numerically determining the mode shapes. The advantage of this approach is that the accuracy obtained in the mode shape identification is a function only of the accuracy of the numerical integration used and not of the number of terms in the power series expansion. The drawbacks are that invariance of the modal manifolds cannot be proven and mode bifurcations can be easily overlooked.

Polymer dewetting via stimuli responsive structural relaxation-contact angle analysis

Thin films of a stimuli-responsive homopolymer dewet as a stimulus response after anion exchange of the imidazolium's counter anion. Contact angle analysis and interfacial energy considerations indicate dewetting goes counter to increasing spreading coefficient. Intrafilm stress arising from structural relaxation drives the dewetting.     

Memory effects during the unbiased translocation of a polymer through a nanopore

Through a detailed Langevin dynamics simulation study, the role of memory effects during unbiased translocation is explored. Tests are devised to uncover the presence of memory effects by directly measuring forward/backward-correlated motion as well as the associated change in the dynamics. Conducting these tests at low and high viscosities, a range of behaviours across different time scales is revealed: short-time forward correlations at all viscosities, quasi-static behaviour at low viscosity, and long-time backward correlations at high viscosity. By applying these tests at different portions of the translocation process, these memory effects are also shown to vary as translocation proceeds. Combining this information with standard measurements, a physical picture of unbiased translocation as the diffusion of a local minimum is proposed.     

Analysis of chemical warfare agents. I. Use of aliphatic thiols in the trace level determination of Lewisite compounds in complex matrices

A series of normal aliphatic thiols have been used to derivatise the chemical warfare agents Lewisites I and II (LI and LII) in hydrocarbon matrices. Varying the chain length of the thiol allowed adjustment of derivative tR by 5.9 min for Lewisite I and 5.3 min for Lewisite II. Linear regression analysis of the chain length of the thiol derivatives of the Lewisite species, and that of a series of normal alkanes against tR, allowed regression models to be developed for each set of compounds. Application of the models allowed thiol reagents to be chosen to give derivatives of Lewisites I and II that eluted before and after the major hydrocarbon contaminant. Limits of detection were comparable for all thiol derivatives analysed by GC-MS in the selection ion monitoring mode (all below 1 microg ml(-1)). The robustness of this approach was illustrated by successful identification of Lewisite I in samples from the Sixth Proficiency Test (organised by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, OPCW) in a matrix of 1 mg ml(-1) diesel oil.     

One-step,stereoselective synthesis of octahydrochromanes via the Prins reaction and their cannabinoid activities

Novel, functionalized octahydrochromane derivatives were synthesized in a single step via the Prins reaction. Enantiomerically pure (+)-isopulegol was reacted with benzaldehyde to stereoselectively yield the corresponding octahydro-2H-chromen-4-ol derivative containing five stereocenters. A total of 10 compounds were synthesized by altering the enantiomer of isopulegol and the substituted benzaldehyde, and the resulting enantiopure octahydrochromanes were screened in vitro against the cannabinoid receptor isoforms CB1 and CB2. Compounds containing an olefin at the C4 position [(+)-3c, (?)-3c, (?)-7c, (?)-9c and (?)-11c] of the octahydrochromane scaffold were found to exhibit reasonable displacement of [³H] CP55,940 from the CB receptors, whereas the corresponding hydroxy analogs [(+)-3a, (+)-3b, (?)-3a, (?)-3b and (+)-5a] had very little or no effect.
