In this paper, we have shown the existence of large amounts of quintic nonlinearity in asymmetric three-coupled quantum wells, which arise due to a probe pulse and two controlling laser beams. The possibilities of generation and propagation of ultraslow bright optical solitons in these systems have been examined in situations of both Kerr and quintic nonlinearities. We have also demonstrated numerically that these solitons are stable. The modulation instability of a continuous or quasi-continuous wave probe beam has been also investigated and the role of quintic nonlinearity in suppressing this instability has been addressed.  相似文献

We have examined experimentally the motional spectrum of an electron cloud confined in a Penning trap. When the axial oscillation is excited by a radio frequency field the resonance exhibits a double structure. Both components depend differently on the number of trapped electrons and have different shape and width. We conclude that one of them corresponds to the excitation of the individual electrons while the other is the center-of-mass mode of the cloud. The threshold behaviour of the center-of-mass resonance suggests that it is a parametric instability of a Mathieu type equation of motion. The solution of a difference equation in the form of an infinite continued fraction is used to obtain a class of exact solutions for the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of doubly anharmonic oscillators described by potentials of the type (1/2)2x2+(1/4)x4+(1/6)x6, n>0, provided certain constraints on the couplings are satisfied. The soliton perturbation theory is used to study and analyze the stochastic perturbation of optical solitons in addition to deterministic perturbations of optical solitons that are governed by the nonlinear Schro¨dinger's equation. The Langevin equations are derived and analyzed. The deterministic perturbations that are considered here are of both Hamiltonian as well as of non-Hamiltonian type.  相似文献

Integrated optic directional couplers consisting of curved waveguides are simulated analytically by solving the Riccati equation. The coupling coefficient between the curved waveguides with a parabolically varying gap and the condition of total power transfer between the waveguides are derived. In order to compute the overall coupling coefficient and hence the power distribution along the waveguides for Ti:LiNbO 3 curved waveguide directional couplers, the coupling coefficient for straight waveguide couplers is computed for different gaps using the effective-index-based matrix method (EIMM). Finally, the power distribution in the curved waveguides along the length is computed. The method is mostly analytical except the effective-index method and is computationally simple.  相似文献

This article examines the idea that the temporal resolution of the auditory system can be modeled using a temporal window (an intensity weighting function) analogous to the auditory filter measured in the frequency domain. To estimate the shape of the hypothetical temporal window, threshold was measured for a brief sinusoidal signal presented in a temporal gap between two bursts of noise. The duration of the gap was systematically varied and the signal was placed both symmetrically and asymmetrically within the gap. The data were analyzed by assuming that the temporal window had the form of a simple mathematical expression with a small number of free parameters. The values of the parameters were adjusted to give the best fit to the data. The analysis assumed that, for each condition, the temporal window was centered at the time giving the highest signal-to-masker ratio, and that threshold corresponded to a fixed ratio of signal energy to masker energy at the output of the window. The data were fitted well by modeling each side of the window as the sum of two rounded-exponential functions. The window was highly asymmetric, having a shallower slope for times before the center than for times after. The equivalent rectangular duration (ERD) of the window was typically about 8 ms. The ERD increased slightly when the masker level was decreased, but did not differ significantly for signal frequencies of 500 and 2000 Hz. The temporal-window model successfully accounts for the data from a variety of experiments measuring temporal resolution. However, it fails to predict certain aspects of forward masking and of the detection of amplitude modulation at high rates.  相似文献
