Parallel preconditioners are presented for the solution of general linear systems of equations. The computation of these preconditioners is achieved by orthogonal projections related to the Frobenius inner product. So, minM∈??∥AM?I∥ F and matrix M0∈?? corresponding to this minimum (?? being any vectorial subspace of ??n(?)) are explicitly computed using accumulative formulae in order to reduce computational cost when subspace ?? is extended to another one containing it. Every step, the computation is carried out taking advantage of the previous one, what considerably reduces the amount of work. These general results are illustrated with the subspace of matrices M such that AM is symmetric. The main application is developed for the subspace of matrices with a given sparsity pattern which may be constructed iteratively by augmenting the set of non‐zero entries in each column. By making creep and recoverable creep measurements of a nearly monodisperse low molecular weight poly(methyl phenyl siloxane) sample, we have found on decreasing temperature towardsT
g that there is continuously a change in the viscoelastic spectrum concomitant with a decrease of the steadystate recoverable compliance. This behavior is exactly the same as previously observed in low molecular weight poly(styrene), proving that this spectacular anomaly in the viscoelasticity of low molecular weight polymers is general and deserves an explanation. Photon correlation spectroscopic measurements performed on the same sample have extended the observation of the viscoelastic response to shorter times and the result corroborates the trend of variation established by the creep data.Dedicated to Prof.Dr. E. Experimental data on the effect of thallium and sodium impurities on the lattice heat conductivity of PbTe at room temperature
are reported. Because the lattice of lead chalcogenides is strongly polarized near charged impurities, the effect of impurities
on the lattice heat conductivity depends substantially on their charge state. This property of the material has been used
to determine the charge state of the thallium impurity in PbTe. The results obtained argue for a model of quasi-local thallium-impurity
states which assumes low electron-correlation energy at an impurity center.

Ideas previously enunciated by the author about the physical interpretation of curvilinear space with torsion are developed.
With the new equations describing the eigenstates of such a space, the static centrosymmetric solution for gravitational and
electric fields can be made consistent with the Newton and Coulomb laws. The asymptotic behavior of the axisymmetric solution
at infinity is studied. The gyromagnetic ratio obtained is characteristic of the electron.

We use the eikonal approximation to develop a general formula for the cross sections of inelastic collisions of multicharged
fast ions (including relativistic ions) with atoms that is applicable within a broad range of collision energies, has the
standard nonrelativistic limit, and becomes, in the ultrarelativistic case, the well-known result that follows from the exact
solution of the Dirac equation. As an example we study the excitation and ionization of a hydrogenlike atom, the single and
double excitation and ionization of a heliumlike atom, and multiple (up to the eighth order) ionization of the neon atom and
(up to eighteenth order) ionization of the argon atom. We derive simple analytical expressions for the inelastic cross sections
and establish recurrence relations linking the cross sections of ionization of different orders. Finally, we compare our results
with the experimental data.

The investigation of the 1s HFS provides a good possibility for testing QED effects in a combination of a strong electric
and magnetic field. Here, we report about the laserspectroscopic measurements of the ground state hyperfine splitting in 207Pb81+. To handle this M1-transition in the infrared optical regime with its long lifetime, we developed a new detection technique
using a bunched ion beam. For the observation of fluorescence light, a new mirror system is adapted to the emission characteristics
from an ion beam at relativistic velocities.

We investigate theoretically the effects of optical absorption and saturation of the non-linear index of refraction on the
bistability of non-linear distributed feedback structures (NLDFBs). By assuming that the Kerr non-linearity saturates in an
exponential fashion, we obtain for the first time closed-form expressions for the so-called self-phase and cross-phase modulation
terms. Our investigation shows that both absorption and, in particular, saturation significantly affect the bistable properties
of this structure and in many cases eliminate this response completely. In some cases, however, saturation alters the NLDFB's
transfer characteristics in a potentially useful manner. We find that weak levels of saturation may increase the contrast
ratio between the intensities of the high and low bistable states. At increasing levels of saturation, where bistability is
no longer observed, we find regimes where the NLDFB structure could possibly be used for optical amplification.
