A study of solid-state rhodium(III) sulfates

Solid-state rhodium(III) sulfates and their aqueous solutions were examined by IR and electronic absorption spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, X-ray powder diffraction analysis, and ¹⁰³Rh and ¹⁷O NMR spectroscopy. A study of the spontaneous aquation of freshly prepared solutions showed that this process results in an equilibrium between the subsystems of monomeric and oligomeric complexes. It was found that solid-state rhodium(III) sulfates vary in phase composition, basically consisting of dimeric and trimeric complexes.     

Solid-phase oxidative halodecarboxylation of β-arylacrylic acids with the ceric ammonium nitrate—alkali halide system

The solid-phase oxidation of cinnamic, 4-methoxy- and 3,4-dimethoxycinnamic acids with Ce(NH₄)₂(NO₃)₆—MHal system leads to β-halostyrenes. Similar procedure in the absence of a metal halide results in a cleavage of the C=C bond giving the corresponding benzaldehydes. Published in Russian in Izvestiya Akademii Nauk. A study of the photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide nanopowders

Photodestruction and adsorption of dyes in aqueous suspensions of nanopowders of titanium dioxide of anatase modification was studied. The photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide nanopowders was examined in relation to the dispersity of particles and pH of the medium.     

Total synthesis of the marine cytotoxic caulibugulones A-D

We report the first total synthesis of the cytotoxic marine alkaloids caulibugulone A-D. This synthesis confirmed the assigned structures and provided sufficient material for further biological testing.     

Target Level Method in Linear Multi-Criterion Problems

We consider the target level method for solving linear multi-criterion maximization problems. The method finds an efficient (Pareto-optimal) vector estimate that is closest in the Chebyshev metric to the target level point specified by the decision maker. The proposed method describes (parametrizes and approximates) the efficient set. In the linear case the number of scalar optimization problems needed to describe the set of efficient vector estimates is substantially reduced. A formula is derived which, under certain conditions, can be used to compute efficient vector estimates without solving any optimization problems. An algorithm based on these results is proposed for two-criterion problems.     

Non-Steady-State Natural Convection in a Model Electrochemical System with Vertical and Horizontal Plane Electrodes

Non-steady-state mass-transfer processes in the electrochemical cells of rectangular cross-section with vertical and horizontal electrodes under the conditions of natural convection are simulated numerically taking into account the diffusion and convection of solely ions discharging at the electrode under limiting-current conditions. The interrelated time variations of the limiting current density at various ratios of the electrode height (length) to the interelectrode distance and the distributions of ion concentration and hydrodynamic velocity over the cell are determined.     

Uncertainty of the two-loop RG upper bound on the Higgs mass

A modified criterion of the SM perturbative consistency is proposed. It is based on the analytic properties of the two-loop SM running couplings. Under the criterion adopted, the Higgs mass up to 380 GeV might not give rise to strong coupling prior to the Planck scale. This means that the light Higgs boson is possibly preferred for reasons other than the SM perturbative consistency, i.e., for reasons beyond the SM.     

The calculation of neutron self-shielding factors of a group of isolated resonances

The resonance neutron self-shielding factor, G _res, is required in neutron metrology and activation data analysis. In a previous paper, the authors have shown that a dimensionless variable can be introduced which converts the dependence of G _res on the physical and nuclear properties of the material samples into an universal curve, valid for the isolated resonances of any nuclide. This work presents a methodology based on the universal curve, which enables to calculate G _res for a group of isolated resonances by weighting its individual contributions. A good agreement was reached with results calculated by the MCNP code and with experimental values for Mo foils and wires. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Absorption of cnoidal electromagnetic waves by superlattice electrons in the process of impurity ionization

Absorption of cnoidal electromagnetic waves, which are the most general periodic solution to the sine-Gordon equation, by electrons of a one-dimensional quantum semiconductor superlattice in the process of impurity ionization is studied in terms of the semiclassical approximation. The dependence of the absorption coefficient on the electric field of an electromagnetic wave is found to be nonmonotone with a pronounced peak.
