Tests involving the cold compaction of four polymeric powders in circular section tapered dies were carried out to study the force transmitted through the powders. It was found that the decreasing cross-sectional area could be used to compensate for the force loss in order to keep the transmitted pressure high but the effect was not as large as had been anticipated. The optimum angle of taper was found to be in the region of 75 to 80°. A mathematical model was developed for the compaction of plastic powders in tapered dies. It was found that an equation of the type could be used to prodict the transmitted pressured in a tapered die from a knowledge of the compaction characteristics for a cylindrical die. 相似文献

The masses of the radioactive nuclei (46)V and its decay daughter (46)Ti have been measured with the Canadian Penning Trap on-line Penning trap mass spectrometer to a precision of 1 x 10(-8). A Q(EC) value of 7052.90(40) keV for the superallowed beta decay of (46)V is obtained from the difference of these two masses. With this precise Q value, the Ft value for this decay is determined with improved precision. An investigation of an earlier Q-value measurement for (46)V uncovers a set of 7 measurements that cannot be reconciled with modern data and affects previous evaluations of V(ud) from superallowed Fermi decays. A new evaluation, adding our new data and removing the discredited subset, yields new values for G(V) and V(ud). When combined with recent results for V(us), this yields modified constraints for the unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and other extensions of the standard model. 相似文献

Measurements of the production of forward high-energy pi(0) mesons from transversely polarized proton collisions at sqrt[s]=200 GeV are reported. The cross section is generally consistent with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The analyzing power is small at x(F) below about 0.3, and becomes positive and large at higher x(F), similar to the trend in data at sqrt[s]< or =20 GeV. The analyzing power is in qualitative agreement with perturbative QCD model expectations. This is the first significant spin result seen for particles produced with p(T)>1 GeV/c at a polarized proton collider. 相似文献

Results on high transverse momentum charged particle emission with respect to the reaction plane are presented for Au + Au collisions at square root s(NN)=200 GeV. Two- and four-particle correlations results are presented as well as a comparison of azimuthal correlations in Au + Au collisions to those in p + p at the same energy. The elliptic anisotropy v(2) is found to reach its maximum at p(t) approximately 3 GeV/c, then decrease slowly and remain significant up to p(t) approximately 7-10 GeV/c. Stronger suppression is found in the back-to-back high-p(t) particle correlations for particles emitted out of plane compared to those emitted in plane. The centrality dependence of v(2) at intermediate p(t) is compared to simple models based on jet quenching. 相似文献

We present an improved direct measurement of the parity-violation parameter A(b) in the Z boson-b-quark coupling using a self-calibrating track-charge technique applied to a sample enriched in Z-->bb events via the topological reconstruction of the B hadron mass. Manipulation of the Stanford Linear Collider electron-beam polarization permits the measurement of A(b) to be made independently of other Z-pole coupling parameters. From the 1996-1998 sample of 400,000 hadronic Z decays, produced with an average beam polarization of 73.4%, we find A(b)=0.906+/-0.022(stat)+/-0.023(syst). 相似文献

[reaction: see text] Indolones are prepared in excellent yield at 80 degrees C in water by radical reaction (aryl radical formation, hydrogen atom abstraction, cyclization, and rearomatization) mediated by the reagent diethylphosphine oxide (DEPO). The reaction features V-501 as a water-soluble initiator; no other additives are needed. Pollimyrus adspersus is a fish that uses simple sounds for communication and has auditory specializations for sound-pressure detection. The sounds are species-specific, and the sounds of individuals are sufficiently stereotyped that they could mediate individual recognition. Behavioral measurements are presented indicating that Pollimyrus probably can make species and individual discriminations on the basis of acoustic cues. Interclick interval (ICI; 10-40 ms) and frequency (100-1400 Hz) discrimination was assessed using modulations of the fish's electric organ discharge rate in the presence of a target stimulus presented in alternation with an ongoing base stimulus. Tone frequency discrimination was best in the 200-600-Hz range, with the best threshold of 1.7% +/- 0.4% standard error at 500 Hz (or 8.5 Hz +/- 1.9 SE). The just noticeable differences (jnd's) were relatively constant from 100 to 500 Hz (mean 8.7 Hz), then increased at a rate of 13.3 Hz per 100 Hz. For click trains, jnd's increased linearly with ICI. The mean jnd's for 10- and 15-ms ICI were both 300 micros (SE= 0.8 ms at 10-ms ICI, SE= 0.11 ms at 15-ms ICI). The jnd at 20-ms ICI was only 1.1 ms +/- 0.25 SE. 相似文献

In this report we present the first behavioral measurements of auditory sensitivity for Pollimyrus adspersus. Pollimyrus is an electric fish (Mormyridae) that uses both electric and acoustic signals for communication. Tone detection was assessed from the fish's electric organ discharge rate. Suprathreshold tones usually evoked an accelerated rate in naive animals. This response (rate modulation > or =25%) was maintained in a classical conditioning paradigm by presenting a weak electric current near the offset of 3.5-s tone bursts. An adaptive staircase procedure was used to find detection thresholds at frequencies between 100 and 1700 Hz. The mean audiogram from six individuals revealed high sensitivity in the 200-900 Hz range, with the best thresholds near 500 Hz (66.5+/-4.2 SE dB re: 1 microPa). Sensitivity declined slowly (about 20 dB/octave) above and below this sensitivity maximum. Sensitivity fell off rapidly above 1 kHz (about 60 dB/octave) and no responses were observed at 5 kHz. This behavioral sensitivity matched closely the spectral content of the sounds that this species produced during courtship. We have measured the transverse asymmetry A(T') in 3He(e,e(')) quasielastic scattering in Hall A at Jefferson Laboratory with high precision for Q2 values from 0.1 to 0.6 (GeV/c)(2). The neutron magnetic form factor G(n)(M) was extracted based on Faddeev calculations for Q2 = 0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/c)(2) with an experimental uncertainty of less than 2%. 相似文献

Electron temperature and electron density measurements were made in an atmospheric-pressure argon plasma jet by line-shape analysis of Thomson-scattered laser light. The dependence of electron temperature and electron density on the scattering angle was investigated. Measurements were made using incident laser wavelengths of 532 and 355 nm. At 532 nm, the electron-ion collision frequency exceeds the Landau damping rate for shallow scattering angles, and the electron plasma wave resonance structure in the Thomson line shape is broadened. This resulted in dramatic increase in the apparent electron temperature as a function of decreasing scattering angle. At 355 nm, collisions do not affect the Thomson line shape. In this case, an angular dependence of the measured electron temperature is not expected and was not observed. Data taken at 532 nm at larger scattering angles are consistent with the 355-nm results, and show that the electrons are not in thermodynamic equilibrium with the heavy particles. 相似文献
