Stable carbocations. Part 21. Intra-ionic proton transfer in electrophilic cyclisation of 3-ferrocenyl-1-phenylpropen-1-yl cation

The spontaneous conversion of the title cation into the 1-phenyl[3](1,2) ferrocenophan-1-yl cation proceed by intra-ionic 1, 3-shift of a cyclopentadienyl α-ring proton to C(2) of the homoannular bridge; the letter cation undergoes deprotonation by stereospecific loss of the exo-proton adjacent to C⁺.     

Atomic absorption inhibition titration of orthophosphate and polyphosphates

The atomic absorption inhibition titration of phosphates was studied for two types of burner. Dependence on gas Flow-rates was observed. The method with a pre-mix burner was employed to determine phosphate in surface and waste waters. The results are compared with those by the standard method. The proposed method was found to be rapid, simple and accurate.     

Space structure of a fireball and the pion radius

Results of calculation of the fireball radius as measured by means of the Hanbury-Brown and Twiss (HBT) effect are interpreted in the context of Landau's hydrodynamical model. A method based on a simple geometric picture of fireball formation is used to deduce the pion radius. From available data of various \(\bar p\) p annihilations andπ ^± p,K ⁺ p collisions, it is foundr _π=0.76±0.22 fm. A derivation is given on the decoherence factor of the Kopylov formula. A discussion is presented on other applications of the HBT effect to particle physics.     

Comparison of the growth and degradation of poly(glycolic acid) and poly(ε‐caprolactone) brushes

The growth and degradation of poly(glycolic acid) (PGA) and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) brushes were compared. Using tin (octanoate) as the catalyst, optimal conditions were found for growth of each polyester brush from the hydroxy‐terminated silicon surface via ring‐opening polymerization. PCL brushes grew thicker at elevated temperatures but the thickest PGA brushes grew at room temperature. Unlike bulk polyesters that can degrade under both acidic and basic conditions, the confined surface polyester brushes only degraded under neutral or basic conditions. The degradation mechanism of grafted polyester brushes was probed through a blocking test. It was shown that the terminal hydroxy groups of these polyester brushes were essential to the degradation process indicating a preferential backbiting mechanism. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Total synthesis of lansiumamides A and B and alatamide

The total syntheses of lansiumamide A, lansiumamide B and alatamide have been completed taking advantage of the dihalo-olefination of N-formylimides. The syntheses are convergent, flexible and allow for the generation of analogues not accessible through other routes.     

On Random Field Induced Ordering in the Classical <Emphasis Type="Italic">XY</Emphasis> Model

Consider the classical XY model in a weak random external field pointing along the Y axis with strength ε. We study the behavior of this model as the range of the interaction is varied. We prove that in any dimension d≥2 and for all ε sufficiently small, there is a range L=L(ε) so that whenever the inverse temperature β is larger than some β(ε), there is strong residual ordering along the X direction.
