Measurement of the longitudinal structure function and the smallx gluon density of the proton

At HERA energies the smallx region (x?10^?2) can be explored atQ ² values large enough that leading twist QCD calculations are valid. We show how measurement of the longitudinal structure function,F _L (x,Q ²), can lead to accurate measurement of the gluon structure function at such smallx values. Experimental systematic errors are discussed fully and requirements for the measurement outlined. We conclude that it should be possible to distinguish between the widely varying gluon distributions which are currently allowed.     

Neutral strange particle production in antineutrino-neon charged current interactions

Neutral strange particle production in \(\bar v\) Ne charged current interactions is studied using the bubble chamber BEBC, exposed to the CERN SPS antineutrino wide band beam. From a sample of 1191 neutral strange particles, the inclusive production rates are determined to be (15.7±0.8)% forK ⁰ mesons, (8.2±0.5)% for Λ, (0.4±0.2)% for \(\bar \Lambda \) and (0.6±0.3)% for Σ⁰ hyperons. The inclusive production properties ofK ⁰ mesons and Λ hyperons are investigated. The Λ hyperons are found to be polarized in the production plane.     

Dilepton and trilepton production by antineutrinos and neutrinos in neon

A sample of over 25,000 fully measured neutrino and antineutrino charged current interactions in BEBC includes 192 dilepton candidates. The prompt signal after subtraction of background is 41 ±7µ⁺ e ^-, 35±7µ⁺µ^- events from \(\bar v\) interactions, and 32±7µ^-µ⁺ events from ν interactions. There are 2 trileptons, µ^-µ^- e ⁺ and µ^-µ^-µ⁺. Results are compared with other experimental data and with the standard model. Limits to prompt like sign µ⁺ e ⁺, µ⁺µ⁺ and µ^-µ^- signals are given and compared with other experiments and with theoretical calculations.     

A posteriori inclusion of parton density functions in NLO QCD final-state calculations at hadron colliders: the APPLGRID project

A method to facilitate the consistent inclusion of cross-section measurements based on complex final-states from HERA, TEVATRON and the LHC in proton parton density function (PDF) fits has been developed. This can be used to increase the sensitivity of LHC data to deviations from Standard Model predictions. The method stores perturbative coefficients of NLO QCD calculations of final-state observables measured in hadron colliders in look-up tables. This allows the a posteriori inclusion of parton density functions (PDFs), and of the strong coupling, as well as the a posteriori variation of the renormalisation and factorisation scales in cross-section calculations. The main novelties in comparison to original work on the subject are the use of higher-order interpolation of Lagrangian form, which substantially improves the trade-off between accuracy and memory use, and a CPU and computer memory optimised way to construct and store the look-up table using modern software tools. It is demonstrated that a sufficient accuracy on the cross-section calculation can be achieved with reasonably small look-up table size by using the examples of jet production and electro-weak boson (Z, W) production in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 14 TeV at the LHC. The use of this technique in PDF fitting is demonstrated in a PDF-fit to HERA data and simulated LHC jet cross-sections as well as in a study of the jet cross-section uncertainties at various centre-of-mass energies.     

Coherent production ofρ − mesons in charged current antineutrino-neon interactions in BEBC

Coherent production ofρ ^? mesons in charged current antineutrino interactions on neon nuclei is studied in the BEBC bubble chamber exposed to the CERN SPS wide band beam. The cross section is measured to be (95±25)·10^?40 cm² per neon nucleus, averaged over the beam energy spectrum. The distributions of kinematical variables and the absolute value of the cross section are in agreement with theoretical predictions based on the CVC hypothesis and the vector meson dominance model.     

Evidence for higher twist effects in fast π− production by antineutrinos in neon

Evidence for a significant higher twist contribution to highz π^? production in antineutrino scattering is presented. In events withW>3 GeV andQ ²>1 GeV² in our data, it accounts for (51 ±8)% of all π^? withz above 0.5. It is consistent with thez?Q ² correlations of Berger's higher twist prediction. The data are inconclusive concerning the predictedy?z correlation andp _T dependence. Thez ?Q ² correlation is not adequately described by the Lund Monte-Carlo.     

Production ofρ +, −, 0 (770),η(550), ω(783) andf 2(1270) mesons in\bar v neon and ν neon charged current interactions

The production of the meson resonances ?(770) (all three charge states), η(550), ω(783) andf ₂(1270) in \(\bar v\) Ne and ν Ne charged current interactions is investigated in a bubble chamber experiment with BEBC at CERN. Except for thef ₂, the main features of resonance production are reasonably well described by the Lund model, although the average resonance multiplicities are overestimated by the model by (67±30)%. The average multiplicities of all resonances, including thef ₂, are well reproduced by a semiempirical model, whose parameters were determined from hadron interaction data.
