Shape distortions induced by convective effect on hot object in visible, near infrared and infrared bands

The goal of this study is to examine the perturbation induced by the convective effect (or mirage effect) on shape measurement and to give an estimation of the error induced. This work explores the mirage effect in different spectral bands and single wavelengths. A numerical approach is adopted and an original setup has been developed in order to investigate easily all the spectral bands of interest with the help of a CCD camera (Si, 0.35–1.1 μm), a near infrared camera (VisGaAs, 0.8–1.7 μm) or infrared cameras (8–12 μm). Displacements due to the perturbation for each spectral band are measured and finally some hints about how to correct them are given.     

Primal mixed formulations for the coupling of FEM and BEM. Part I: linear problems

We apply the boundary integral equation method and a primal mixed finite element approach to study the weak solvability and Galerkin approximations of linear interior transmission problems arising in potential theory and elastostatics. The existence and uniqueness of solution of the resulting weak formulations and of the associated discrete schemes are derived by using the classical theory for variational problems with constraints. Suitable finite element subspaces of Lagrange type satisfying the compatibility conditions are utilized for defining the Galerkin scheme. The error analysis and corresponding rates of convergence are also provided.     

Characterization of multimetallic grid-type complexes by electrospray mass spectrometry

The self-assembly of the terdentate ligands 1a-h, based on terpyridine-like binding sites, with octahedrally coordinated metal ions, such as Fe(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Hg(II) and Pb(II), leads to the formation of the supramolecular grid-type complexes 2a-c(M(II)), 3d-g(M(II)) and 4h(M(II)). The structures and compositions of these coordination complexes in solution were deduced from electrospray mass spectrometry (ESMS) measurements. The results agree with the data available from x-ray radiocrystallography in the solid state and/or NMR spectroscopy in solution. ESMS may be applied in cases where other methods are difficult to use or inconclusive. This study stresses the power of ESMS in supramolecular chemistry.     

Reduction electrochimique des oxydes de fer: Confrontation des caracteristiques electrochimiques et crist allographiques

Electrochemical properties of iron oxides, crystallographic data and examination of etching pits by scanning electron microscopy, suggest that ferric iron has electrochemical reactivity which differs according to its crystallographic position in the solid.     

Chaotic breathers in delayed electro-optical systems

We show that in integro-differential delayed dynamical systems, a hybrid state of simultaneous fast-scale chaos and slow-scale periodicity can emerge subsequently to a sequence of Hopf bifurcations. The resulting time trace thereby consists in chaotic oscillations "breathing" periodically at a significantly lower frequency. Experimental evidence of this type of dynamics in delayed dynamical systems is achieved with a Mach-Zehnder modulator optically fed by a semiconductor laser and is subjected to a delayed nonlinear electro-optical feedback. We also propose a theoretical understanding of the phenomenon.
