Dynamic crosslinks formed by thermoreversible associations provide an energy dissipation mechanism to toughen hydrogels. However, the details of the organization of these crosslinks impact the hydrogel properties through constraints on the network chain conformation. The physical crosslinks generated by hydrophobic association of the 2‐(N‐ethylperfluorooctane‐sulfonamido)ethyl methacrylate (FOSM) groups in a random copolymer of N,N‐dimethylacrylamide (DMA) and FOSM provide a simple system to investigate how the hydrogel structure (as determined from small angle neutron scattering impacts the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. The initial hydration of the copolymer at 25 °C leads to a kinetically trapped structure with large‐scale heterogeneities. Heating the hydrogel at 60 °C, which is above the glass transition temperature for the FOSM domains, allows the hydrogel structure to rearrange to reduce the density of network defects and the structural heterogeneities. That effectively increases the crosslink density of the network, which stiffens the hydrogel and decreases the swelling at equilibrium at 25 °C. The processing history determines how the hydrophobes aggregate to form the physically crosslinked network, whose structure defines the mechanical properties of these hydrogels. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Treatment of wastewater generally results in elevated natural 15N abundance (delta15N) in the effluent and sludges. For example, high delta15N values are found in treated sewage effluent, biosolids, and other wastes that are commonly applied to land. In contrast, N deficient coniferous forest soils usually have a low delta15N. When wastes with high delta15N values are applied to land, their distinctive delta15N signature can potentially be used to trace the fate of waste-derived N in the ecosystem. In this paper, we provide an overview of the use of delta15N in land application of wastes, including New Zealand case studies on tracing nitrogen in forest ecosystems.  相似文献

We report on the nature of photothermally patterned regions inside self-assembled hydrogel nanoparticle materials containing coassembled colloidal Au. These composite materials are prepared from approximately 226-nm diameter particles composed of the environmentally responsive polymer, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAm). Upon centrifugation to achieve a proper volume fraction, these close-packed assemblies display a sharp Bragg diffraction peak in the midvisible region of the spectrum and can be reversibly converted into a nondiffracting glassy material as the temperature is raised above the characteristic phase transition temperature of the polymer. The addition of 16-nm colloidal Au prior to centrifugation allows the homogeneous distribution of metal nanoparticles throughout the close-packed material. Localized heating is then possible upon excitation of the Au plasmon absorption with a frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser (lambda = 532 nm). Such localized heating events lead to patterned regions of ordered crystalline phases inside of bulk glassy phases. We illustrate that the nature of the locally patterned area results in the formation of a microlens due to density/refractive index gradient in the patterned crystalline region. The Gaussian power distribution of the incident beam is thought to be a contributing factor in the microlens formation. Microlens formation is shown by observing interference patterns similar to Newton's rings, which change over time as the region is formed. A true hallmark of the lens is also demonstrated by focusing an image through the patterned structure.  相似文献

Then we extend φ onto the complex plane C (keeping the same notation) and show that φ monotonically semiconjugates PC| to a topological polynomialg:CC. If P does not have Siegel or Cremer periodic points this gives an alternative proof of Kiwi's fundamental results on locally connected models of dynamics on the Julia sets, but the results hold for all polynomials with connected Julia sets. Numerical modeling is an attractive option for cost-effective development of new high-efficiency, soot-free combustion devices. However, the inherent complexities of hydrocarbon combustion require that combustion models rely heavily on engineering approximations to remain computationally tractable. More efficient numerical algorithms for reacting flows are needed so that more realistic physics models can be used to provide quantitative soot predictions. A new, highly-scalable combustion modeling tool has been developed specifically for use on large multiprocessor computer architectures. The tool is capable of capturing complex processes such as detailed chemistry, molecular transport, radiation, and soot formation/destruction in laminar diffusion flames. The proposed algorithm represents the current state of the art in combustion modeling, making use of a second-order accurate finite-volume scheme and a parallel adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) algorithm on body-fitted, multiblock meshes. Radiation is modeled using the discrete ordinates method (DOM) to solve the radiative transfer equation and the statistical narrow-band correlated-k (SNBCK) method to quantify gas band absorption. At present, a semi-empirical model is used to predict the nucleation, growth, and oxidation of soot particles. The framework is applied to two laminar coflow diffusion flames which were previously studied numerically and experimentally. Both a weakly-sooting methane–air flame and a heavily-sooting ethylene–air flame are considered for validation purposes. Numerical predictions for these flames are verified with published experimental results and the parallel performance of the algorithm analyzed. The effects of grid resolution and gas-phase reaction mechanism on the overall flame solutions were also assessed. Reasonable agreement with experimental measurements was obtained for both flames for predictions of flame height, temperature and soot volume fraction. Overall, the algorithm displayed excellent strong scaling performance by achieving a parallel efficiency of 70% on 384 processors. The proposed algorithm proved to be a robust, highly-scalable solution method for sooting laminar flames.  相似文献
