Energy distribution curves of laser-induced electron pulses from a tungsten tip have been measured as a function of tip voltage and laser power. Electron emission via tunneling through and/or excitation over the surface barrier from photoexcited nonequilibrium electron distributions are clearly observed. The spectral shapes largely vary with the emission processes and are strongly affected by electron dynamics. Simulations successfully reproduce the spectra, thus allowing direct insight into the involved electron dynamics and revealing the temporal tunability of electron emission via the two experimental parameters. These results should be useful to optimize the pulse characteristics for many applications based on ultrafast laser-induced electron emission.  相似文献

The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) has extended its search for solar axions by using (3)He as a buffer gas. At T=1.8 K this allows for larger pressure settings and hence sensitivity to higher axion masses than our previous measurements with (4)He. With about 1 h of data taking at each of 252 different pressure settings we have scanned the axion mass range 0.39 eV?m(a)?0.64 eV. From the absence of excess x rays when the magnet was pointing to the Sun we set a typical upper limit on the axion-photon coupling of g(aγ)?2.3×10(-10) GeV(-1) at 95% C.L., the exact value depending on the pressure setting. Kim-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov axions are excluded at the upper end of our mass range, the first time ever for any solar axion search. In the future we will extend our search to m(a)?1.15 eV, comfortably overlapping with cosmological hot dark matter bounds.  相似文献

We report the generation of correlated photon pairs in the telecom C-band at room temperature from a dispersion-engineered silicon photonic crystal waveguide. The spontaneous four-wave mixing process producing the photon pairs is enhanced by slow-light propagation enabling an active device length of less than 100?μm. With a coincidence to accidental ratio of 12.8 at a pair generation rate of 0.006 per pulse, this ultracompact photon pair source paves the way toward scalable quantum information processing realized on-chip.  相似文献

We measure the dynamics of nuclear spins in a single-electron charged self-assembled InGaAs quantum dot with negligible nuclear spin diffusion due to dipole-dipole interaction and identify two distinct mechanisms responsible for the decay of the Overhauser field. We attribute a temperature-independent decay lasting ~100 sec at 5 T to intradot diffusion induced by hyperfine-mediated indirect nuclear spin interaction. By repeated polarization of the nuclear spins, this diffusion induced partial decay can be suppressed. We also observe a gate voltage and temperature-dependent decay stemming from cotunneling mediated nuclear spin flips that can be prolonged to ~30 h by adjusting the gate voltage and lowering the temperature to ~200 mK. Our measurements indicate possibilities for exploring quantum dynamics of the central spin model.  相似文献

We have found evidence of molecular vacancies in the herringbone molecular crystals pentacene and hexabenzo[bc,?ef,?hi,?kl,?no,?qr]coronene using electron diffraction. Experimental electron diffraction patterns taken parallel to the long molecular axis from these crystals exhibited streaking in two characteristic directions, and the streaking approximately followed the molecular herringbone directions. Molecular dynamics simulations of vacancies in pentacene showed that the streaks can be explained by anisotropic lattice relaxations near the defects. Simulated electron diffraction patterns from the crystal–vacancy models at finite temperatures showed streaking similar to the experimental data. The energy of formation of vacancies in pentacene was calculated to be 1.7?eV. The vacancy entropy in pentacene was simulated to be approximately 40 times the Boltzmann constant. We expect these molecular vacancies to influence charge transport and mechanical properties.  相似文献

The increasing use of nanopesticides has raised concerns about their effects on crop plants and the impact of human health as well as ecological effects. While increased uptake of metal ions has been observed before, to date, very few studies have demonstrated the presence of nanoparticles in edible tissues. Single-particle inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (sp-ICP-MS) has been suggested as a powerful tool to detect inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) in environmental samples. Here, we exposed edible plant tissues from lettuce, kale, and collard green to nano-CuO, simulating its use as a nanopesticide. We applied sp-ICP-MS to demonstrate the presence of nanoparticles, both in the water used to rinse crop leaf surfaces exposed to nano-CuO and within the leaf tissues. Lettuces retained the highest amounts of nCuO NPs on the leaf surface, followed by collard green and then kale. Surface hydrophilicity and roughness of the leaf surfaces played an important role in retaining nano-CuO. The results indicate that most of the nanoparticles are removed via washing, but that a certain fraction is taken up by the leaves and can result in human exposure, albeit at low levels.

We have investigated numerically the plasmonic effect on a two-dimensional periodic array of metallic nanostructures. The unit cell of the array has an Ag nanosphere and nanorod pair formed in a single structure. Three-dimensional finite element method is used for the study on the sensing performance within the optical spectra. The study takes into account the influences of the structural and material parameters, the rotational angle of the metal nanostructure, the number of metal nanostructure per unit cell, and the localized surface plasmon resonances. The proposed nanostructures function as a refractive index sensor with a sensitivity of 400 nm/RIU (RIU is the refractive index unit), showing the characteristics of low transmittance (T?=?3.90%), high absorptance (A?=?94.5%), and near-zero reflectance (R?=?0.15%), could be achieved by a triangular arrangement of nanostructures within a unit cell. We also show how the tailoring of the structural parameters relates to the specific sensing schematics of the sensor.
